Luxating Pattellar Just found out that Freddie has bad knees. I hate that....does every dog need surgery for this? |
I'm sorry to hear that. I remember when I found out Peanut had LP in both knees.. grade 2 and grade 4 . I was so upset! Freddie might and might not need surgery, did the Vet tell you what grade it is? I have Peanut on a glucosamine supplement- it really helps. It is called Cosequin- its a powder you sprinkle over their food. |
No, this was just my regular vet, saying he has bad knees, one is worse than the other. Unfortunately the nearest knee vet is 4 hours, at least, away. Did you have surgery on yours? I have the pills of the Cosequin, will that help him? |

Knees So sorry that your dog has the knee problem. My previous dog had LPs but they were not bad enough to require surgery. Depends on the grade and also age. Your Vet will know how advanced the issue is and what to do. If it is only a low grade then Cosequin will help. Even if you have to do the surgery, most dogs take it very well and are on their feet (excuse the pun!) in days. It costs around $3000 per knee I think. Good luck and hope your baby does well without surgery. |

The cosequin I have are in a pill form. Walmart carries it now. Do you think that will be okay for him? I asked our vet about it, she said the surgeon would put him on that after surgery, that it would not help him right now. Freddie does not seem or has ever shown any kind of pain, he will just hold his leg up, when he runs and that is usually when it is very cold. I wonder if a velcro type brace would help him....? I could probably make a very small one just for the knee. Any suggestions? |

Pixie, 4 1/2 at the time, had Grade 3 in one knee and grade 2 in the other. She walked off the bed and I ended up having surgery on the grade 3. She did not do well with the knee popping out so I had 4 opinions before I had the surgery. A few years ago it cost 2500.00 for one knee by an orthopedic surgeon. Now my Cali has grad 4 in both knees, is almost 8 years and has done well with out the surgery. My vet said she may never need surgery and we will just keep an eye on it. Make sure you limit Freedie's jumping. I use ramps for mine. |
Surgery Cost The $3000 is my estimate based on those I know who had surgery. As Patti said it was $2500 some years ago, it may not be too much off the mark? Others may have more concrete current numbers? Some posters here say that surgery is not always the only option, but vets seem to want to do the surgery. Also I see below that the Cosequin CAN help without surgery? A hard decision that only you and the ortho surgeon can make. |

Op I'm sorry I meant to post not nessecarily but I'm on my cell so it messed up. I personally would not do it surgery unless the dog is in pain or having problems with it. Callie had the surger on one knee and her ACL fixed and it was very rough the first two or three weeks where the worst. Then toward the end she had a pen try to come out and it caused her so much pain right before they took it out. Now it's a lot better and I will do it on the other if needed but if she dosent need it I won't do it. |

I am sorry I used the wrong word and did check it but from my experience which is from what most people answer a question is that knowing how rough and painful lp surgery is that unless the dog is having problems with the lp such as pain I would not do it. That is not false info. |
Lp Give Lovetodream a break! She is on the cell and that is not the easiest keyboard to operate. Although a few typos it was clear what she was saying. Namely, her dog had a really bad time with the surgery and post op recovery, and due to pain a PIN had to be taken out. Her advice is to only do the surgery if the dog is suffering and in pain. Perhaps some have lost the point of this thread, which is to help the original poster to make a hard decision. Apologies for interrupting and for any typos!!! |

Its great to share expierences, but don't make statements about something that should be coming from your Vet/ specialist. Thats when people get confused. |
