2 Year Old Yorkie's Right Hind Leg not moving! Hey everyone. First of want to introduce myself. My name is Robert, I have a 2 year old 3 lbs. yorkie that is the love of my life. I have browsed these forums since Kenny was born 2 years ago, but never have posted/registered. So on Saturday, we took Kenny for a haircut. This was a new grooming place we were not familiar with. When we picked him up, the groomers were telling me how hyper he was and how he was hard to groom. Everything seemed okay, but Kenny was acting a little slow/lazy. So that evening he was fine, but kept licking his right hind leg like something was wrong with it. The next morning he was running around like normal, and then he went to take a nap. When he woke up from his nap, his leg wasn't moving, and just dragging. It was heartbreaking to see him like this. We immediately ran to the Animal Hospital and they took Xrays, and the doctor noticed some blood on his paw, probably from cutting him or his nails at the grooming place. There was nothing wrong with his spine, and his joints were perfectly fine. He gave him a shot, and prescribed some antibiotics and sent us on the way. 2 days later, his leg is still not functional. It is at the fully extended position. When I massage his leg and joints lightly, I can get it to contract, but essentially it is still not moving on his own. We have kept him in a crate ever since to try to get him rest and try to ensure he is not staying on that leg. Anyone else experience this? What should I do? Any suggestions/experiences would be wonderful. |

Welcome. I am sorry Kenny is having problems with his leg. The vet checked and cleared any problems with his knee? It's very common for yorkies to have problems with luxating patella's. Was the blood on the same leg he is having problems with? I would get a second opinion since he is still having problems. If you have a specialty vet clinic by you that would be a good place to have him checked out by an othropedic vet and possibly a neurologist. Since they mentioned he was hard to groom and sleepy after you picked him up there is always the possibility he fell off the grooming table. I hope not but you never know. Please keep us posted on little Kenny. My husband passed away 8 months ago and his name was Kenny so your little Kenny's story has touched my heart. |

Do you have a regular vet or is the animal hospital the regular vet? In any case, I would tell them my concerns. I agree with Patti, it sounds like something happened at the grooming salon. Do they strap them down when grooming, I wonder if a strap could have gotten tied around his leg. It might be time for a specialist. |

Thanks for the love! The doctor said it has nothing to do with the knee.. Patti I am very sorry to hear about your husband. I am trying to get answers from the groomer, but from a liability standpoint I don't think I could ever get them to admit anything happened to him... sad but true. We have a regular vet too. The ER vet said it's a neurological issue if one side of his body doesn't work completely but I am sure it can also affect individual limbs. |

I would take him to the orthopedic doctor right away. They are the experts that will find the problem right away, and not stick a "band-aid" on it and send him on his way. I'm not sure where you live, but are you in Newport Beach here in CA.? If so, then you have access to some of the country's best orthopedic doctors in the world. One is in Ventura, and owns VMSG. VMSG Ventura | Veterinary Medical And Surgical Group (VMSG) His name is Dr. Bruecker. I take my girls to him and also to Dr. Ortega who in an internal specialist. Let us know what you find out. |

Something is wrong with that leg. Vet needs to do an xray. Im sorry this happened we tend to think of groomers as a safe place to take our pets and thats not always the case. I dont care how rambuncous he was an experienced groomer should know how to deal with that and he certainly shouldnt have been hurt |

Absolutely a specialist is called for...either orthopedic or neurologist....it seems to me maybe nerve damage from nerve compression, either in hais back or his hind leg.....and please do not wait...if it is nerve compression, if it is caught in time, it can be released and damage will be minimal...if it is allowed to continue, it wont recover.....or it may take many, many years to improve.... I would be VERY suspicious about what took place at that groomer...for them to tell you he was difficult to groom, they may have tied him down or handled him roughly and caused this. |

Hi! You've gotten lots of very good advice from members here all ready so I just wanted to say welcome to YT and I pray your little Kenny gets well very soon. Please keep us posted on what you find out. It's always a great concern when our babies are not well. Prayers!! |

I wonder if he was left unsupervised on the table and fell off and broke his leg. The groomer should have told you if anything happened |

Oh no I am so sorry this has happened to Kenny, I agree with the others I think a specialist is in order here. Welcome to YT. I am sure not only myself but many others here are praying for this little guy. Please let us know what you decide and how little Kenny is progressing. |

As others stated I would go to an orthopedist. My girl fell and broke her leg and my regular vet (no longer my vet:mad:) stuck a cast on her and sent her home. 5 weeks later nothing had changed. They offered amputation , I tore it out of there and went to a specialist and 3400.00 later and plate surgery she is now on rest for another 6 weeks because she should have had surgery to begin with, which would have been much more simple surgery had we not waited for 5.5 weeks...:( |
