Routine appointment turns bad :(
 
We took Colby for his last set of shots and a routine appointment to have him checked out so he could be neutered. They said he has not gained any weight since we got him 4 months ago. She then examined him and said that his kidney were smaller than what they were supposed to be, so she is thinking a shunt or something. We left him there so they could run some test. We returned later to get him and they said we should know something Monday. I will keep you guys updated on any results. I pray he is okay.

So sorry to hear. I hope it is nothing too serious and that whatever is wrong can be fixed quickly for the little guy.

Contact your breeder immediately with this unfortunate news....just so she will know she may have an issue she will be facing. I hope this is not a problem but if it is, you shouldnt be facing it without the breeder, if it is a congenital/genetic issue.

I am going too, but what is so bad is all 4 of mine are from the same breeder my blue Angel and Colby are from the same mom and dad and Paisley and Toby all have the same dad as Angel and Colby but different Moms, so they all could be affected. I do not know what I would do if one were sick with something let alone all 4. From what my breeder told me after I got them the moms are also sisters, so it turns out all their moms are related and they all have the same dad.

I will keep Colby in my prayers. My Dixie had congenital kidney failure at 7 months of age. I had only had her 5 weeks. My Pixie was from the same breeder and related to her and she was fine. The specialist I saw said it was just a freak thing and not something the breeder could have prevented. I agree let the breeder know as soon as possible. My breeder was great through it all. Hopefully he is just a little peanut.

Praying for the best... I too don't think a congenital issue would occur in all related pups, at least not the same issue. A small liver is usually what's associated with Liver Shunt, not small kidneys. Also, he's over a year old now isn't he? I wouldn't expect him to be putting on too much weight after the puppy growth stages... after all, he is a Yorkie. Maybe a little more weight after he's neutered, but not all that much.

Colby just turned 28 weeks this past Thursday. We brought him home at 12 weeks old at 3.5 lbs and he was 3.8 lbs yesterday. That is why they are so worried I think, and they said his kidneys felt really small. he is long and built big but just won't put on weight. I feed him Fromm. I guess now we just wait on the results. He was my pup I got with Swimmers legs, and he has always been lazier than the other, but when I voiced my concerns before to my vet they said he may just be lazy not to worry. This new vet yesterday is who was worried and decided to do test.

Poor little sweet Colby! I just hate hate hate hearing one of these little guys is not up to snuff. Here's hoping if the kidneys are small, they can devise some treatment regimen that will help him deal with less function from them in the form of diet, meds, etc. I'll be praying for Colby. Please keep us posted about what the vets find out and are going to do for him. Here's {{{hugs}}} to Colby. Try not to worry until and if you have to, though I know that's far easier said than done!

Has Colby been displaying any odd behavior, something you might not have thought of. Since this wasnt a sick visit to the vets, maybe you might think of something to help them help Colby. Have you noticed that he has he been drinking more or urinating more?

I took Dixie to he vet just because I thought it was odd that her pee was colorless and odorless. I thought I would just check it out and it was me being a little neurotic when it comes to their health. I was shocked to learn she was in terrible kidney failure. The nephrologist I took he too for a second opinion said there was a lot they can do to keep them going with kidney failure if they have at least 25% kidney function. Dixie did not. He said he had many yorkies in his practice that were doing well many years later. So hopefully it is nothing serious but they can do a lot even with serious problems. Dixie was laid back but so are all of mine. Keeping your baby in my prayers for a good outcome.

You must be beside yourself with fear. I'm so sorry this has happened. At least you know that if it is little Colby's kidneys there is a solution. I'm praying they discover it's something much more benign and Colby is on the road to recovery really soon. Sending prayers for you as well.

Thank you for everyone's prayers. Colby is ok. They said his liver enzymes are slightly elevated, but they would just watch that, but everything else looked fine. If I could ask one more favor. I have my daughter at the ER for what they think may be Pancreatitis. This would be the 3rd time in less than a year. Please pray with me for her. Thank you

I'm glad to hear that Colby's okay, but I'm so sorry about your daughter. I hope she gets better quickly and that she is soon free from pain.

Thank you everybody. My daughter has Pancreatitis for the 3rd time within a year. They admitted her, so now we wait for her Pancreas levels to go down.

Oh the power of prayer! I will pray for your daughter and a complete healing. I am so thankful little Colby is going to be fine. How our Lord watches over His people and His animals too! I will keep prayers going for your sweet daughter.
