serious skin issues
 

We have a 4 year old yorkie with serious skin problems. He will itch until he draws blood and has sores all over his body. The vet has giving him several different types of medicine, shampoo, shampoo with oatmeal, fish oil, benadryl and different food. We have cut all of his hair off trying to help him. We have taking insurance out to help with the cost of all his vet cost. He is on a pill each month for fleas and we r told its the best one for fleas. I feel bad for him and not happy that the vet can't find help for him . any suggestions would be great. Thank you. :animal-pa

What food are you feeding?

Riley had skin issues while on Acana... the vet suggested giving him fish oils. I was giving him Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet. I still wasn't helping all that much. Then Acana changed their formula and he really started having issues. He would get little dark round dry spots and some red on my tummy area.

I switched him to Canine Caviar and haven't had Any Issues whatsoever since. Here is a before and after.. The After is only 7-days After switching to Canine Caviar. He is now completely 100% Clear and has been eating it for almost 6-months, now.

:thumbup::thumbup: I had the same issues with my Peanut- Feeding CC as well and have NOT had any issues at all!

I'd go to a Vet Dermatologist, asap.

Princess has a severe flea allergie, we may not even see a flea because she is on flea killing topical, but it touches her and we see the results...hot spot red irritation constant chewing scratching...she has euined her beautiful double coat around her back legs.

Princess is our miniature schnauzer.

We've has great sucess using Apple Cider Vinegar (with mothers) as a topical treatment.

Rubbing it on her to repel fleas etc before we go places-otherwise she's a prisoner in our flea free zone of hone & yard (we treat yard with ORGANIC DE) I mean we rub it on legs under belly back through fur to skin...

We also use ACV as a skin treatment-which it serves a variety of skin issues and has antibiotic properties. We wash her down with warm water sometimes shampoo her then when wet we coat her with ACV thoroughly really working it onto skin we leave it on at least 30 minutes if not overnight.
She then is just rinsed off...not the best smell but the results are better than ANY of the other treatments we have used.

We do ACV treatments everyother day alternating with raw cold pressed coconut oil, for 7 days-she is always clearing by day 7.

It stinks but it works.

While you may not have a flea allergie issue try this-it works for so much!

Princess was and untreated is so bad the vet cautioned if not under control this issue affects her quality of life due to severity...we all know what that means.

Thankfully this works.

Also use a low allergen abd grain free food and do allergie testing at vets.

This may be more than skin issue but a kfood allergie.

Thank you so much. I will go find the food today that you have stated. The before picture looks just like aj. I will start him on the new food today. We tried the fish oil and it never changed him. He use to have great skin and hair. I tried to post his pic under my screen name but it didnt work. Again thank you.

Like kjc, I very much recommend a Vet Dermatologist. They can do skin scrappings, etc., and get things figured out quickly. Worked for us.

Riley's was diagnosed by his vet as a food allergy...
Since switching to Canine Caviar he is 100% Clear as the day I brought him home.

I would take him to a dermatologist if you haven't already. My Cali had terrible itchy skin and scratched out her coat and caused sores. After trying all the usual treatments she was put on Atopica and has been great ever since. It is so hard to see them so miserable.

I strongly suggest you seek the advice of a vet dermatologist. It sounds like your pup has had quite enough suffering....better to let the professionals see him and help you with this. Trying to get to the bottom of what a pup is allergic to can be complicated.

My baby isc10 months old and has had skin problems from day one! The vet put her on antibiotics for two months which was not a good idea. Then medicated shampoo on top of it. Finally 4 months of vet just speculating, I took her to a vet dermatologist. Did skin scrapings, thought it might be ringworm , bacterial, or viral. They put her on flucazanole for six months. I changed her food to grain free, blue buffalo or puppies, and grain free for treats. Her skin now 10 months later is perfect. She was on meds pretty much all of her life. She had bald spots with flake skin, almost like puss oozing once in awhile, always itchy and irritated. I felt so bad for her. She came from a puppy mill sold to me supposedly healthy by a broker!!!! She was a very sick puppy. Almost a year later its finally over. Now noticed knee problems with her legs! Another illness she has to suffer from!!!

OHHHH Wow! That is a lot!! Sorry you had to go through all of that. So glad her skin is now perfect. Is she on Any meds now or she is finished with everything?

Please go to a Vet Derm asap...they will solve this for you. With your baby breaking the skin barrier and drawing blood, you really must go soon bc of both severe infection potential and permanent damage to skin and hair follicles (you don't want permanent hair loss).

If you are hesitant to go, then you have to go to your regular vet and at the very least get: 1) skin scraping for immediate bacterial view under scope and 2) scraping to grow out in culture for 10 days and 3) discuss possibility of thyroid issue and whether to blood test for it.

This is going to sound crazy, but long ago, my old roommate had a cat that kept getting hot spots and itchy, she had these massive gaping sores all over her. As soon as one would clear up, another would come. She was at the vets office every week for probably 6 months, they could not figure out what was wrong with her. Different meds, different foods, all were tried with NO results.
My roommate decided to try things like removing all the plants from the house, nothing, then she stopped burning incense, a little better, so she asked me if I would stop burning anything of any kind, no more candles, incense (which I was glad about bc I hated that stuff) and the cat cleared up with no problems ever again!!! Although we moved on, she still has the cat and still no skin problems at all, she has plants, but she never burns candles or incense anymore.
Sounds strange, but this cat was definitely allergic to the perfumes or something in the candles or incense.

OP: Hopefully the CC works for your baby. I know what works for our dogs might not work for yours, however it is worth the try.

I had the same issues with Peanut, Theresa ( RileyDC) told me to try it, right before I was going to buy different brand of food. I said to myself, it isn't going to hurt to try. He is already miserable! I am so glad I listened!! Hopefully your baby has the same reaction, I know how hard it is to deal with-

does benadyrl help with the itchies, if it does help it is not food related, it will not help with food allergies. Chester is a itchy dog as well, no fabric softners, all free and clear soap, no air freshners or anything, and his salmon oil has helped for him. Good luck

I took my poodle to a vet derm dr. and it was a food allergy. He told me to put her on venison and when I did it cleared up. Now the Canine Cavier is working for some dogs and I am happy for that! Whatever works, do that. It does help to see the right dr. for skin problems.

Benadryl does help with some food allergies in both people and dogs...its depends on the actual allergen being in the group as well as the processing of the food.

Like myself and my kids have pollen allergies thus we have a food allergie to honey benadryl if we took it helps for that.

Yep. Benadryl helped with Riley's food allergy... Now he is on the right food and has had No Issues for the past 6-months. He and I are both Happy!! :thumbup: :)

Whether Benadryl works is a crap shoot. Sometimes it does, sometimes no. It will be more likely to work w/ enviro / seasonal allergy response than w/ food allergies. Remember, food allergies only account for about 10% of dog allergies, so it's pretty rare.

The reason Benadryl and other antihistamines don't work w/ some food issues is bc *some* food intolerances have absolutely nothing to do with the immune system - even though the symptoms are exactly like a histamine response. The reason why is bc there *are* foods that contain histamine and/or release histamine - so you have what appears to be an immune system mediated histamine response, when it's not....that's where Benadryl can't do anything. In those cases, you have to find a food that doesn't contain the ingreds that cause the food intolerance response.

Benadryl is a first line med. You try it for 10 days, evaluate. If it doesn't work, then you might move to Zyrtec or Claritin and try for 10 days. If those don't work, then - depending on the dog's quality of life - you think about prescrip meds like Atopic, Temaril P, steroids, or allergy testing + shots.
