Please Help!!!!!!!! Something is wrong with Angel and Paisley. They were in their kennel and I gave them some water. They still seeemed thirsty so I gave them a new bowl. I fed them and they ate it, and then next thing I know Angel throws up the water everywhere. Then we noticed they were both acting strange, so we took them out and they are both unsteady on their feet and shaky. All they will do is lay there and when you put them down they collapse to the floor. I have given them both KARO syrup. The only emergency vet I can find is an hour away. I have called every vet in town, but no one takes emergency calls. What Can I do? Annmarie |
AnnMarie I think I would drive the hour to the emergency vet if you can. |
I agree. Get in the car and go. |
If they are both being affected, there is something they got into/ate or something in the air. Sounds like it's affecting their nervous system and I don't think you should wait until morning. I agree with Bobbi and Karen, go ahead and drive the hour...it's long but better than waiting until morning on this IMO Praying they will be ok! |
Sending prayers for your babies. |
Of course I am not a vet, but I do know how fast these babies can dehydrate, and dogs collapsing would send a real red flag. Have they gotten into anything? For sure I would be on the road to the emergency vet! Keep us posted. |
Log off the computer, get in your car and bring them to the e-vet. Also bring some of the food you fed them along in case it may need to be evaluated., I would waste no time getting them there |
I would have the food checked maybe it is bad..so sorry hope you are enroute to the vet |
Hopefully you are on your way to the er vet. I would call them to let them know you are on your way and what is happening. Please keep us posted. I will keep them in my prayers. |
I agree with the others...go to the er vet...better safe than sorry...and take the food with you. Please keep us posted. |
New bowl???? Put it aside for now...for further investigation....save food, put aside....get to the ER vet ASAP....you have given them Karo....take the Karo in the car and go immediately! Please let us know what id determined.....they both have shared the same toxin...from food, bowl, water, something they ate in the house or yard.....worry with that later, go ASAP to the vet...... |
I agree with everyone you need to get to a vet ASAP. Did you take them outside before the symptoms started? The symptoms your describing fit with antifreeze poisoning or maybe some other toxins. I'll be praying for your babies |
Praying for you and the babies... Godspeed... |
Praying for you and those babies....think of all the places they went around the house or yard within an hour or so before the became ill....I am so praying they did not get into antifreeze.....could some no good thug throw something into your yard they could have gotten into and both eaten?.....whatever it is, it hit them at the same time....that means they got into whatever it is, at the same time...fertilizer? insecticied in the yard? Like everyone else, praying so hard for these babies....just awful..... |
Sounds like some kind of poisoning. Hope OP drove to emergency vet. |
I am praying also please let us know how they are. |
Still praying... |
I am trying to stay awake to hear about how these babies are....but I dont know that I can go any longer.....please let us know about the babies asap.... |
I am sure you have been up all night with these babies, probably at the vet....will check in frequently during the day, for an update on them....praying they are OK, but VERY worried..... |
I hope your babies got the help they need. |
Update Thank you everyone for your help and concern. I am sorry it took so long to update. I have had my hands full taking care of these puppies. I could not find anyone to take me to the emergency vet last night (I can not drive at night) after calling everyone I knew, so I was on the phone with the emergency vet and the breeder all last night. They both said to get their sugar up. The breeder told me this happened once while she still had them. I was told to give them Karo which is all I had and then give them something high in protein to bring their protein levels up. They both suggested scrambled eggs, so that is what I gave them. I stayed up with them giving them Karo every hour. I dozed off early this morning and when I woke up they were playing, so I think they are okay. I did a whole lot of praying over them last night also. I felt so hopeless not being able to get them to the vet and having to take care of them at home, but with the vet and the breeders help I was able to get them better. I am still going to have them checked out by their vet today just to be safe. To answer some of your questions. The girls never go outside unless I am taking them to the vet. We are too afraid of them picking up something or something picking them up. The floor they are on is a brand new floor we just put down and it was swept and mopped before they were let out of their kennel, so they could not have picked up anything, so I have no idea except it was their sugar levels. I am just thankful they are okay. I love my fur babies as much as I love my skin babies. At least I could have called and ambulance for them. I wish they had some kind of transport for sick animals. I would have called them last night. Once again thank you for your concern. I will keep you all updated. God Bless Annmarie |
Annmarie, I'm so sorry you had to face this last night without having any way to a vet. You must have been so scared. Praying that it was the blood sugar and everything checks out ok at the vet today. Please keep us updated after you get back from the vet - am very curious as to the cause of the episode. And, I agree...someone should come up with a pet-ambulance/transport service for those who cannot drive. |
The breeder said this happened once when she had them? Have the parents been tested for any kind of seizure disorder or potentially hereditary neurological problem? Were the pups checked by a vet at the time this happened before? Did the breeder mention this particular issue at the time you get them? That sounds kinda hinky to me. I am very glad they are ok now, but keep us updated as to what the vet says. |
Thanks for the update... so glad they made it through the night... |

If this is a problem with these two, you will need to have NutraCal or NurtaStat on hand at all times. I has vitamines as well as hi-dose glucose, which Karo syrup does not have....Karo is just glucose....You need to go ahead and plan for this to be happening again, and have NutaCal on hand everywhere you are....and carry a tube in your purse! I used to have a baby that had sugar issues and I had tubes everywhere....here at home, in the glove box in the car, in the RV, at the lake house, in my purse.....You are going to have to monitor what they eat to be certain they are eating enough and often enough. Have it checked out....I would be concerned that this event happened to both babies at exactly the same time....unusual......little coincidences like that bother me.... |
This is a puzzling problem. First the breeder said this happened when he/she still had them and them you have new floors. Is it carpet, wood? Carpet can put out dangerous fumes for weeks and wood floors are installed with either nails or adhesive which could be dangerous. Hope all turns out well for you and your babies. |
The above reasons are why I'd really like to know what the vet says today. It is way too coincidental that this happened at the same time with both of them. I really think it is a reaction to either the new flooring or perhaps what was used to mop with. I'm just really glad you all made it thru the night. Still praying for you and your babies! |
Karo is not the right medicine. as othees said nutri cal is better I use karo for my epileptic after a seizure strictly for short term rise in glucose, he then eats-if he wasn't eating afterward karo would do more harm than good. This sounds far more than low blood sugar with the need to drink and then both simaltaniously acting this way. They need to be under immediate veterinary care and the breeder should have more of an idea of why besides it happened before give some karo and eggs... This is not right. |

I am sorry, but I agree......on all the above points mentioned. I see Karo used all the time...Karo is an emergent measure, but that is NOT what you need to have on hand if your have a baby that has any history of hypoglycemia. You MUST keep NutriCal or NutriStat available at all times....but I do not believe for one minute the answer here was simply a case of low blood sugar.... |
