rat poison My son and his wife had their dog (shorty) over at his dads house today and the dog got into some rat poison, they took him to the vet and they gave him something to make him vomit but now we need to watch him for a couple days for bleeding, has anyone ever had to deal with a situation like this?? |
I don't know....I always thought that in a case like that they would start Vitamin K therapy right away. I would think that if you wait for signs of bleeding it could be too late. Maybe you should call your local emergency vet for another opinion on this? |
I have never dealt with this, but i have heard that they use peroxide to make them throw up if something bad is swallowed |
Ive given the # to my er vet to my son im hoping he will call he says shorty seems fine he is eating and going potty like normal he had eaten a bowl of food prior to getting into the poison im not sure what they have him to make him vomit but they were able to see little bits of the poison in the vomit and they feel they got him to the vet in plenty of time |
When this happened to us. Vitamin k therapy was needed for quite a while. I would call another vet to be safe. The vitamin k is to clot the blood. How rat poison works is by causing uncontrolled bleeding. I am going to look for thatthread now... |

Hopefully they got him in quickly enough..sounds like they may have. I would not just go by the way he is acting, though. Something like that, when it goes bad, is really bad....it would happen quickly and then you are looking at transfusions...and it is not pretty. I will say a prayer for the little guy. |
Hopefully he only took one bite...poor baby |

Rat poisoning causes internal bleeding...by the time you see signs of it I would guess it would be too late. |
OMG.....I am so sorry about this.....I am praying for your sons little dog.... I encountered this many, many years ago......Vit.K therapy, charcoal to absorb poison, seems I remember something about Protamine Sulfate injections to reverse the clotting cascade....second opinion needed ASAP! I think this is an emergent thing....once the hemorrhaging starts internally, it is really an entirely different game..... |
oh I sure hope he is ok. I hate to say I had a friend who lost their dog this way...but I think they didn't know for a long time what he had eatten. |

If you just have time to read my first post, I found out later that he had to take the vitamin k for a MONTH and THEN have a clotting test done. PLEASE get a second opinion |
