Yorkie dropped at groomer Hi, my little yorkie (acorn) went in to get groomed on Christmas Eve and I received a call that she was injured. I picked her up immediately and we went straight to the animal emergency hospital. She suffered head trauma and was kept there Over night. We just brought her home last night and she still isn't walking right. She curves to the right when walking now, and runs into things. It's obviously a side effect from her fall. Anyone have a puppy that has gone through something similar? She is only 6 months and I'm wondering if this is permanent. |
What did the vet do? If she's still having symptoms, I would go back ot take her to another vet. |
They had her on oxygen & medicine to reduce cranium swelling. She couldn't walk at first, but she got a lot better. They told me its a common problem (head trauma from being dropped) but her recovery is really unpredictable. We have an appointment for her regular vet tomorrow to check over her, I'm just hoping shell recover fully :-( The groomer is paying medical bills. We did her first grooming and just wanted her to be cleaned up for the holidays. Next time I'm telling the groomer to groom her on the floor :-p |
Hi - I'm so sorry this happened! Definitely, take her to another vet or neurologist. She's still got something wrong with her. Bless her heart :( |
I'm not sure if my original reply went through... But here it is in brief. They gave her oxygen & medicine to prevent her brain from swelling from the fall. They released her and said that her recovery is unpredictable. She could be back to normal or forever walk crooked & run into things. She walks & stands curved like an elbow noodle. We have an appointment with a regular vet tomorrow to get her looked over again. It's neurological damage & she's only 6 months :-/ They grooming place is covering the medical costs because it was their groomer that dropped her from high up onto the tiled floor. |
Oh my. I am so sorry to here that. I would definilty take Acorn to the neurologist. Good luck and please keep us updated what he says. Hugs |

Groomer I agree this does not sound good. A new vet or neurologist would be a good next move. Why would the vet let her out with a head injury and not follow up? What a terrible thing to happen at the groomer! Are they helping you with medical costs, that is the least they should do!!! Hope your poor baby gets well soon. |
The Er Vet should have done Xrays and given her a steroid shot and a script for steroids to take at home. If they did not do this go to another vet asap/now and get her treated. Yorkies can recover from most head traumas if symptoms are treated appropriately and in a timely manner. Yorkies that don't get treated may not survive. |
Luckily they did give her the X-rays to make sure it wasn't muscular or skeleton issue. They also gave her a little shot of steroids. I'm hoping she 'relearns' how to walk. She use to love running around the yard... I'm hoping one day soon she'll be able to again. But for the next two weeks its rest & relaxation! |
Okay.... any changes though call the vet back ... if she starts getting worse or shows anything new... Keeping your little one in my prayers... |
If she were my pup, I would take her to my vet and ask for a referral to a neurologist. Or, you can find one at: ACVIM Good luck and please keep us posted. |

Ok, we followed up with a visit from a general vet that my parents use (were visiting so we aren't close to the normal vet we use). He seems to think acorn is just sore and probably suffered a concussion. She is standing better today, just not using the right side of her body as much. He prescribed morphine for her pain & said to keep resting her for two weeks. I'm hoping shell go back to running and playing like she use to. We wanted to possibly pursue showing her in compositions once she is trained, hopefully she recovers enough to one day have that option. Thanks for all your help & concern!! |
im very sorry this happened...i would never return to a groomer who dropped my baby. granted i understand things happen but i trust no one with my babies...sometimes not even my dd. i hope she makes a full recovery and i will keep her in my prayers for that. |
I hope Acorn continues to get better for you. If she continues to have problems a good place to go is the Perdue Vet in Lafayette. Good luck with her. |
Happy to see you followed up with a vet and that Acorn was given something for pain. Please keep us posted on her progress. Keeping her in my prayers. |
Praying for acorns complete recovery |
So happy to hear she's making some improvement.... |
Poor baby! Prayers that she will recover quickly! |
I hope she makes a full recovery. |
I am praying for your baby, and I also hope she makes a full recovery. A few years ago, someone visiting me dropped my little poodle. He had the same symptoms you are describing. The emergency vet initially thought it was from the trauma etc. However, once they released him to me, I just didn't feel like things were right with him. I had him seen by specialists at our local vet school, and he had fluid built up from the fall that was causing pressure on his brain. THey were able to give him an iv medication that removes the excess fluid. This made a MAJOR difference in my baby! I am not saying this is what is wrong with your dog, but I would definitely have a neurology specialist see him. I was assured by my general vet that all was fine, but this was the only treatment that gave him symptom improvement. I am keeping your little one in my prayers, and I hope she makes a full recovery soon!! |
Thanks for sharing your story, it's good to know your dog recovered! Acorn is doing much better today. She was actually running in the snow last night (she's not listening to doctors orders to rest :-p). She's on her pain killers and resting a ton. We have a specialist back home for this, so if she's not back to normal well take her. Thank you all again for your help & prayers<3 |

i am glad she is feeling better and i hope she continues to improve everyday:):) |
I would really try to keep her quiet. Even though the pain killers are working, any jarring, however so slight, could still cause damage, or prolong her healing. |
So scary that the groomer dropped her. Praying for her recovery!! |
Im so sorry this happened, Im glad the groomer is paying the bills, sending you prayers |
Glad there is improvement. Praying |
I am glad there is improvement. I know it is hard, but she should really be resting. |
