Yorkie dropped at groomer Hi, my little yorkie (acorn) went in to get groomed on Christmas Eve and I received a call that she was injured. I picked her up immediately and we went straight to the animal emergency hospital. She suffered head trauma and was kept there Over night. We just brought her home last night and she still isn't walking right. She curves to the right when walking now, and runs into things. It's obviously a side effect from her fall. Anyone have a puppy that has gone through something similar? She is only 6 months and I'm wondering if this is permanent. |
What did the vet do? If she's still having symptoms, I would go back ot take her to another vet. |
They had her on oxygen & medicine to reduce cranium swelling. She couldn't walk at first, but she got a lot better. They told me its a common problem (head trauma from being dropped) but her recovery is really unpredictable. We have an appointment for her regular vet tomorrow to check over her, I'm just hoping shell recover fully :-( The groomer is paying medical bills. We did her first grooming and just wanted her to be cleaned up for the holidays. Next time I'm telling the groomer to groom her on the floor :-p |

They released her and said that her recovery is unpredictable. She could be back to normal or forever walk crooked & run into things. She walks & stands curved like an elbow noodle. We have an appointment with a regular vet tomorrow to get her looked over again. It's neurological damage & she's only 6 months :-/ They grooming place is covering the medical costs because it was their groomer that dropped her from high up onto the tiled floor. |

Groomer I agree this does not sound good. A new vet or neurologist would be a good next move. Why would the vet let her out with a head injury and not follow up? What a terrible thing to happen at the groomer! Are they helping you with medical costs, that is the least they should do!!! Hope your poor baby gets well soon. |
The Er Vet should have done Xrays and given her a steroid shot and a script for steroids to take at home. If they did not do this go to another vet asap/now and get her treated. Yorkies can recover from most head traumas if symptoms are treated appropriately and in a timely manner. Yorkies that don't get treated may not survive. |
Luckily they did give her the X-rays to make sure it wasn't muscular or skeleton issue. They also gave her a little shot of steroids. I'm hoping she 'relearns' how to walk. She use to love running around the yard... I'm hoping one day soon she'll be able to again. But for the next two weeks its rest & relaxation! |
Okay.... any changes though call the vet back ... if she starts getting worse or shows anything new... Keeping your little one in my prayers... |
If she were my pup, I would take her to my vet and ask for a referral to a neurologist. Or, you can find one at: ACVIM Good luck and please keep us posted. |

Ok, we followed up with a visit from a general vet that my parents use (were visiting so we aren't close to the normal vet we use). He seems to think acorn is just sore and probably suffered a concussion. She is standing better today, just not using the right side of her body as much. He prescribed morphine for her pain & said to keep resting her for two weeks. I'm hoping shell go back to running and playing like she use to. We wanted to possibly pursue showing her in compositions once she is trained, hopefully she recovers enough to one day have that option. Thanks for all your help & concern!! |
