Mandie is Throwing Up Hi guys, I'm at work right now and just got a call from my hubby who is at home. He said that about 2 or 3 hours ago, he caught Mandie with a paper towel that she was shredding. He didn't think she ate any of it but not sure. I mention it to see if you think it has anything to do with what's happening now. He said about an hour ago, Mandie threw up (white liquid/foam) about 3 times in succession. Then was "fine." (his words...not mine). He just called me back and they were outside and she was eating on some grass and then she started to throw up again while I was on the phone with him (this was like 5 mins ago). She threw up one time this time (so far) and it was the same white foamy color. I told him to go in and give her some pedialyte until I can get home in an hour and access her. I will obviously take her to the vet in the morning if she's still doing this (she hasn't pooped tonight yet so not sure how that is yet). I will take her to the ER vet if I feel it is even worse. But until then...any ideas? Do you think it was the paper towel (which wouldn't be much since hubby didn't even think she swallowed any) or do you think this is something else? Thanks :( |
Poor Mandie Sorry to hear of her plight. Pethaps she ate some of the paper and got some stuck in her throat and the irritation made her throw up. Usually foam is because her tummy is empty. Lets hope she will be ok and it is just due to the paper. Perhaps give her a biscuit to chew and that may dislodge the paper bits and also put some food in her empty tum? Good luck, hope she is ok. Obviously if she is not, then a vet visit is necessary. |
Mine LOVE the Paper Towel Caper!!! God forbid they find on that my son has dropped from his lap as he eats....game on! That poor towel is shredded into thousands of pieces by the time I can chase one of them down and get the piece THEY have, from them! I really dont think it was the paper towel that made her tummy upset....unless she was to eat a paper towel that had cleaner of some knd on it.....especially since she wouldnt have had the chance to eat a large amount. Maybe she just has a bit of upset tummy....some nice chicken broth for dinner, nothing heavy for dinner....and if she is still sick tomorrow, then a vet visit would be appropriate. |
Thanks so much guys! I tend to wig out about her...especially when I'm not actually here to see what's going on. It's been almost 2 hours now and no more throwing up and now that i see the spots where she threw up the first couple of times, it was not a lot or anything. I think you're right..probably just an upset tummy. Light meal for her tonight. And, I'll keep an eye on things. Still waiting to make sure her poo is okay. |
Oh no, I'm sorry Mandie isn't feeling well. Sending prayers for a quick recovery. |
I wouldn't think a bit of paper towel would do anything... but I guess you never know. Jax has definitely eaten a bit of paper towel before with no issues. People can even eat a little bit of paper w/ no issues (remember those candies that are stuck to paper? God, I probably ingested sooo much paper, LOL, I never totally peeled them off as a kid). But I know how worrisome it is when they throw up. Sometimes dogs just do though. I think if it occurred anymore, I'd get to the vet, but at this point -- just keep an eye, keep her hydrated, and watch for any signs of lethargy, etc. |
Paper I wasn't suggesting the paper was toxic, just bits in her throat that irritated. Sometimes this human eats nuts etc and small bits get in the throat and make me cough and have to drink water to clear it. Dogs do not have the sense to drink to clear up throat issues and sometimes the gag reflex takes over. Of course it could be a more serious issue and if so has to be diagnosed and treated by a vet. But the mom now says the dog is ok and the throw up was minimal, so hope it is over and no big deal. I know I used to go nuts if my dog threw up and take to the vet pronto. Only to have the poor dog subjected to many tests etc for no purpose. We have to be watchful but reasonable. Anyway, only my humble opinion and I pray that Mandie is soon over what ailed her. |
Thank you guys SO much! So far, she's doing better. She just ate a pretty good and light meal and now is aggrevating her brother lol |
Hope she is feeling better, if she was throwing up foam, as others have said it is an empty stomach she is being sick on. She could have a sickness bug, but it could just be from being really hungry alone that's making be sick. Light, bland meals such as chicken or white fish and rice are good for upset tummies. :) |
Okay - 4:15 a.m. (almost exactly 12 hours from the first time) and she woke us up throwing up again. She walked around while she did it but it was about a total of 4 heaves and throws. The first couple were white and foamy (and the first one had a big piece of grass in two pieces in it). The rest of them were clear like water. And, for her size, it wasn't just a little drop or two each time...pretty decent little puddles I got up with a paper towel. Ugh...she ate decent last night and played well. The only thing that is different is that she still hasn't pooped since I got home last night at 6:30pm. Hubby says he didn't see her poop yesterday afternoon...but he isn't always super observant on the pee/poop outside. 95% of the time, she always poops when I get home after work and first thing in the morning when I take her out. I'm concerned about that. If she doesn't poop at her normal time this morning and/or she throws up again, I'm taking her into my vet before work. She laid down right now..back with daddy cuz she's daddy's girl lol...while mommy is the one up after no sleep worrying. Typical *sigh* |
Checking back to see how Mandie was doing this morning. sorry to see she got sick again. Poor girlie, yeah..vet visit may be in order. Sending well wishes and will check back to see how she's doing later on. |
Thanks, Tena and everyone! She just pooped and it was normal. I'm going into work now but hubby is under strict instructions to give her chicken and rice for food and to go the the vet if she throws up again (and to call me if she does anything different than normal). Well...off I go. |
Maudie Poor little baby. Looks like she has a tummy upset. So sorry. Off to vet she goes it seems. Just when we thought she would be ok. Get well soon Mandie. |
Yeah, she's off to the vet right now. Please send up a prayer for my baby girl. Hubby called me at work and said she threw up again and is shaking really bad. I HATE being stuck at work during this!!!! Please say a prayer for me, too...I need God's help to stay calm and not wig out. Thanks so much!! |
Maudie Don't worry, she will be taken care of at the vet's. I apologize for suggesting it was only the paper and hope it did not deter you from seeking vet advice sooner. We pray she will be well soon, it is so distressing to have our babies sick. You will be more stressed as you are not with her. Hugs and prayers. |
So sorry Mandie isn't feeling well:( Good thing she is at the vets getting taken care of, I'll be be praying:) |
Prayers for Mandie that she will be just fine. |
Thank you all for your prayers! Okay, hubby took Mandie to the vet and I talked to the vet on the phone, too. I still wish I'd been there, but this is how it had to be. First off - Hubby found a shredded to pieces mushroom in our backyard this morning. Now, I don't recall seeing this last night (but maybe I missed it..it was dark). I kind of think it happened overnight by a squirrel or chipmunk or something but just in case we absolutely told the vet. She seems to think that it was probably the mushroom, but not certain. She examined Mandie and checked her stomach for pain and if she could feel any obstruction (again, I wasn't there when this was happening but I would've asked if you can actually feel an obstruction with your hands). Anyway, she said Mandie is NOT dehydrated and her gums look good and she didn't whimper or whine when being examined (pressed on). She said that her stomach wasn't destended or anything. Her advice was to give an injection now and some meds to stop the "cycle" of symptoms. I told hubby I wanted bloodwork to check her pancreas and such so he had her get on the phone with me. She pretty much told me that even if it was a pancreatic attack that we caught it super early and this is how she would treat first anyway. She gave Mandie meds to start taking tomorrow and said Mandie can't eat or drink for a few hours after going home today (after the injection that she gave). If Mandie is still showing symptoms or anything on tomorrow, we are to bring her back in and she'll runs some bloodwork and possibly an ultrasound or xray. Since they are open tomorrow and she thinks the treatment at this point would be the same, I told her to go ahead with this. One thing I did want to ask you guys about or vent about - Hubby told me that the vet told him that shaking was NOT a sign of pain. I almost came thru the phone when he told me that. I wish he'd told me that while still at the vet's office so I could confront her about that statement. This is my 2nd vet since getting Mandie. If this doesn't go well (meaning, I don't trust her either), I'll end up probably taking Mandie to yet another vet in the future. I have got to find someone in Montgomery, AL that has yorkies and has a vet that KNOWS all about toy breeds. Okay, that was my vent/ramble. My question is: I'm right, right? Shaking can mean pain. I know it can mean other things but pain is one of them...right???? Thanks again everyone!! |
Mandie Thanks for the detailed update. But it seems it is still a mystery? I hope the meds given were for good reason. At least it looks like nothing major going on in her abdomen, good news! I guess you just have to wait it out to see if she improves? I am surprised that the shaking symptoms did not get much of a reaction from the vet, that would worry me. Good luck and get well soon Mandie. Prayers for you and mom and dad. |
Yeah, I wasn't too thrilled with the no diagnosis but if it continues tomorrow, you better believe I'll be demanding one! ;) Okay, now that I'm home, I can tell you they gave her 3 injections total (in her shoulder) for nausea, a corticosteroid, and penicillin. The meds we are to give her, starting tomorrow, are 1 cc/twice a day of Amoxi Drops and 1/2 of a 16mg tablet of cerenia per day. When she got home, she went straight to her crate (she never goes in her crate) and laid there for a while. I'm guessing she was stressed from the vet visit and probably sleepy from the injection (most likely the nausea injection). But now..2 hours later..she went outside with me and pee'd fine and pooped really good :D I'm getting ready to give her some chicken and rice for dinner (vet said she could eat her reg food, but just for tonight...I'm going with what MOM feels best lol) Thank you again for your support and prayers. Please keep praying that this resolves now and she doesn't have to go back tomorrow for more tests. |
Man die Poor little baby, no wonder she hiding in her crate after all the prodding and shots. Looks as if the vet took care of every possibility with the three meds. That Cerenia drug is marvelous!!! When my dog had gastritis after surgery and was very nauseous it worked wonders very quickly. Let us hope that she feels better tomorrow as other than throwing up she seems in good shape. The Cerenia should kick in and she will be eating well soon. So praying all will be well soon and little Mandie will be over this, and mom and dad can sleep through the night with no worries. I for one am so grateful for your updates, we get caught up in all as if it were our own! Many have been through what you are and we know how stressful it is. Hoping that mom's chicken stays down and that Mandie sleeps well. You do know best!! |
Mandie Sorry about the Man die title, my iPad does its own thing with what I type. It feels IT knows best. LOL! |
So happy to read Mandie is doing well! I know you are so relieved. |
It's frustrating when they don't give you a diagnosis & prescribe all these meds...why is she on antibiotics...to get rid of the fungi??? I hope Mandie is feeling better! |
I know right? I think doctors of all kinds (for people and animals) are way too antibiotic happy. Well, Mandie seems to be doing okay..no more throwing up and she's eating good. I gave her the meds (even the antibiotic drops). The only thing is she hasn't pooped today and I think she has eaten very well. So, I have one stool softner left for her from her spay...told hubby to give it to her if she doesn't poo by noon. Question: can rice cause them to be constipated? if not, I guess it is the meds. |

Mandie WTG Mandie!!! So glad to hear you are feeling better, keep up the good work! Could be the rice and/ or antibiotics causing constipation. Also her diet has probably not been as usual while she was sick. Do not worry as it has only been a day with no poop. I feel she should keep on the Cerenia for a couple of days to be sure. Perhaps with vet approval you could stop the AB though if she does not have an infection? These dogs sure recover quickly thank goodness, but worry us while they are sick. So happy for you, hope all continues to be well. |
I'm so glad Mandie is doing better! I tend to get hypoglycemic and when my blood sugar gets very low, I get shaky. I wonder if her shaking was related to low blood sugar from vomiting and not eating? |
I'm glad Mandie is feeling better! |
Mandie Hi. So happy she is doing well. What medications is she still now on and what do you think was the cause of the upset? I know my little one sometimes has upsets for a day or so and it justs gets better with no meds. The mystery tummy upset!! Merry Christmas and healthy dogs! |
