I need advice.... PLEASE! I hope someone can give me some advice. My little Bogey who will be 18 weeks old tomorrow somehow injured his front leg/paw while roughhousing with his sister over a week ago. I immediately took him to the vet, they took x-rays and put him on a few days of pain meds. Nothing showed up on the x-ray but there was some swelling at the top of his leg. She had me start out with a quarter of a baby aspirin then increase it to half since things weren't really improving. When it first happened he yelped but hasn't since. He was holding his paw up at first now he is just limping. If it weren't for that I would never guess he was in pain. He's playful and even runs on it. I'm trying to keep him from doing that but it's hard with 2 puppies. I started thinking maybe it was the pads on his foot that were bothering him. That's when I noticed that his paw on that injured leg is turning out slightly. I never noticed this before. My vet said his knee and hip were fine. Can anyone tell me what the heck is going on with him? I'm starting to really get worried and stressed :( |
They might need to re-xray. Greenstick fractures can take awhile to show up. And maybe bc the problem is not going away an ortho surgeon should read the xrays. There are many pain meds for pups that are much safer than aspirin. |
There are injuries that don't show up on xrays. I would have the vet look at it again...and if you don't feel comfortable with the diagnosis...a consult with a specialist is in order. I would recommend a board certified surgeon who specializes in orthopedics. |
Thank you. I'm waiting for a call back from the vet to see what the next step to take. I'll just die if this little guy needs surgery. |
I would advise you see an orthopedic specialist....perhaps especially upper leg and up in the shoulder area.... |
I agree with all the advice given. Just wanted to let you know I'll be keeping Bogey in my prayers. |
Hi everyone....wanted to give an update on little Bogey. Please keep our little guy in your prayers, he is scheduled for surgery tomorrow with an orthopedic surgeon to repair a fracture in the "elbow" area of his front left leg. The doctor said he won't know the full extent of the fracture until he gets in there. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact our vet said there was no fracture. She tried taking an x-ray yesterday but said he was too "wiggly" and wanted us to bring him back in on Monday to be sedated and x-rayed. I asked about seeing an orthopedic surgeon and she said he might but wanted us to wait until after x-raying on Monday. After talking with my husband we decided we had waited long enough and got him into the surgeon right away. We're hoping and praying for the best case scenario. |
Best of luck. My only advice would be to heed your vet's advice on rehab. Here are some of the things my vet had me do when mine had leg surgery: * Create a small space, maybe 10-foot long, and keep him in there when you're not directly supervising. I used an X-pen. Put padding on the floor -- maybe an old sleeping bag. Make it as comfortable as possible with a bed (or crate) on one side and a pee pad or litter box on the other. * Don't allow any walking on hard floors -- wood or linoleum. * Don't give in when your pup starts getting restless. Sometimes, the rehabbing has to go on for weeks and weeks. Your vet may have different advice based on the type of surgery. Mine was a cranial cruciate injury. Good luck! They do recover quickly if you follow the vet's rules. |
Good luck with barkleys surgery. Praying for a full recovery |

Thank you everyone, I'll keep you posted. I will definitely do whatever the surgeon advises. The hardest part will be keeping him and his sister separate, they really love each other. Thank you again for your helpful advice! |
