Mojo has a huge lump! Today I found a big, hard lump on the underside of Mojo's chin. I'm calling the vet first thing in the morning, but what the heck is it? It's fairly sizable, at least an inch or so, and hard. I can't really move it. Not to be a panicky parent, but it's freaking me out! |
Wow an inch? Yeah I'd take him in tomorrow too. When was the last time you petted him there and it wasn't there? I found a limp on top of Uni's foot a few weeks ago. I took her in and they did a fine needle aspiration(?) and basically took out some cells and sent it in to a lab to see if they are cancerous or not. Thank goodness they came ack negative, but since its on a weird spot with not much skin the vet isn't going to take it off and we've gotta learn to live with it. But good for you for noticing and taking him in right away. Better safe than sorry. It cost about $160 for me to find out nothing was wrong. =\ ETA I was gonna say if he got vax recently they usually make a large hard lump, but vax are usually given on the shoulder or side, not under the neck, so yeah I'd be concerned also. Hope it's nothing tho. Keep us posted. |
Get in right away. They will likely do a fine needle aspiration. There are lymph nodes under the chin and along side the neck. It might just be a swelling from a "bite" of some nature, or a bit of an infection going on. |
OK, I felt it again and it is not an inch. I guess I just wasn't thinking. It's more like the size of a blueberry. He hasn't had any shots recently, so it's not that. Because of where it's at, I guess it is theoretically possible for me not to have felt it for a little while. I have to comb out his beard every day, though, so I can't think it's been there too long or I certainly would have felt it, right? I pushed his beard aside to get a better look at it. I don't see any redness at all and it doesn't seem to bother him to have me touch it. Ugh, I wish it was tomorrow morning already! |

Is there a black whisker in the middle of the bump? My boys sometimes get a bump, not blueberry size though, where whiskers grow. They both have one big whisker on the chin. It's good to have the vet take a look. Might also be a bite as Gail mentioned. Teddy had a huge lump between his shoulders (no recent vaccinations) and our vet said it looked like a sting. I think it was a spider bite because it took a long time to go away completely. Best wishes to Mojo. |
Hope it turn out to be nothing, but glad you are taking him in |
Any chance it is from an abscessed lower tooth? Did you try looking in the mouth above where the lump is? |
It's actually kind of far back along his jawline. I didn't see any whiskers. I tried to look for an abscessed tooth as well, but it's so far in the back that I couldn't really see anything. I did feel inside his mouth and that didn't seem to bother him. |
I should add that he is acting just fine, other than being over the top clingy today. |
Do you think it could be a swollen lymph node? |
IDK. You could Google lymph node placement in dogs to see if they have them there. |
I am glad you are bring him in today. Keep us posted. Good luck |

The vets checked all his lymph nodes & found them all to be normal. I hope it's nothing serious. |
OK, we could not get him in today, but he will be seen at 5:45pm on Tuesday. I'll post an update ASAP. |
OK, so it is an abscessed tooth. He's concerned about the infection possibly causing a jaw fracture. They gave me antibiotics and are calling me tomorrow to discuss whether they're going to refer us to a specialist. He said they might fracture it removing it, which would mean a specialist would have to put a plate in. At this point, I think we'll just cut out the middle man and go straight to the specialist. I'm not needlessly putting Mojo under more than once. My poor baby! |

My Gina had something like this and it was nothing the vet said. One day I found dried blood on her chin and realized that she had scratched it and it was gone. No harm done. |
Thank goodness you noticed the bump since he was not showing signs. |
I am so sorry to hear about this. Definitely taking him to a specialist is the best. Good thoughts and blessings go out to you both |
So glad you got him checked out so quick. Please keep us updated! |

I hope little Mojo is being made as comfortable as possible and his painful tooth an the lump are soon gone. Do you brush his little teeth and have them cleaned by the vet? Let us know what the specialist tells you. |

Keeping Mojo in my prayers.... |
Poor Mojo! You are such a good mom..you were right on top of it. Praying for your baby to get well safe and soon! |
I do brush his teeth, but apparently I'm not getting the back ones well enough! It's so hard to get back there in his tiny little mouth! I felt so bad when I came home from the vet that I immediately ordered those compact toothbrush heads for my Sonicare. They're arriving tomorrow- can't wait to see what the pups think of the electric toothbrush! We're having a dental done next week Thursday and will have the bad tooth extracted at the same time. I'll post an update that night. Thanks so much for all the support! |

We'll be thinking of him next week and watching for your update. |
Just a quick update- Mojo's surgery went beautifully today. They did have to pull 4 teeth & did a very thorough cleaning. They also removed a small growth from his left shoulder. He has 2 staples still in from where that was removed. The docs said he did great! We return in 2 weeks to get the staples out. |
