Just when you think you have seen it all... Meet Jack London, YHR's newest foster. This is one I have never seen before...if anyone has ever seen or had experience with splints for rib fractures on pups, I would love some feedback to share with his foster mom. I also will be babysitting him for the Thanksgiving holiday so would love any ideas/tips for his care. Of course...I guess it will all depend upon whether or not they can actually DO the surgery...we are waiting for his ultrasound report at this moment. I will do another post with his pictures and video. Please, please keep this little one in your thoughts and prayers...he is tiny, only weighing 3 pounds...so worried for him. Here is his bio on the YHR site..probably easier to just copy it rather than try to tell the whole story again: Meet Jack London, the new kid on the Texas block! Precious boy was turned over to us due to his medical issues. He suffered some kind of trauma previously leaving him with with fractured ribs on his right side and a dislocated hip. Whatever it was, a kick or a slammed door, it was traumatic and obviously left untreated. This poor baby's chest flails due to the multiple rib fractures....you can see it in the video of him that is posted. He has moments of very noisy and labored breathing and is very restless at night. He walks with a limp. Jack London was admitted to Texas A&M last night and is being evaluated today. He will definitely be needing surgery. They are hopeful that they can do a splint to repair his ribs ... it is an old injury so there is some concern. They also will be trying to stabilize his hip, but he may need to have a femoral head ostomy (FHO). They are doing a full workup on him today, including an ultrasound and also a scope because they suspect he also has a collapsed trachea and they want to know the degree of that prior to surgery. |
Here is a video of little Jack London....as you can see his breathing is labored. He gets that way easily, probably due to CT. But the way his chest flails is so disturbing... |

omg that is heartbreaking..he reminds me so much of my baby who also weighs 3lbs and just had a FHO last week for his dislocated hip. I couldn't imagine him having to deal with the extra injuries this little guy has :( Will be keeping him in my thougts and prayers. |
He is adorable, poor baby.... How heartbreaking.... I hope they will be able to help him, I hate to think he is in pain but from his labored breathing I am sure he is uncomfortable..... |

I have no advice but I have to say it's just so heartbreaking to see this sweet little guy suffering because of human being! :( I'll pray that Jack London's surgery is successful and that he'll have the life he so richly deserves. Bless you LadyJane and his foster mother for taking care of this precious baby. ;) |

OMG..........I only know what we go through with humans and traumatic flail chest injury with multiple rib fractures.....this involves long term ventilation, surgical stabilization of fractured ribs to keep from injuring lungs, bouts with pneumonia, analgesia issues,...omg!!! I am soooooo distressed by this poor little baby....thank God he is at A&M.........AND A HIP TOO!!! Holy cow!! This little soul needs every prayer that can be summoned on his behalf..... |
I found the following link...there are others but this one was the first I read. Makes me even madder. This should have been repaired when it happened. That is the one concern they have right now...they are hoping that they can actually do the splint. They need to see all of the ribs and see where they can attach the floating ones. She said that they will secure them to other ribs...and to the splint so that scarring can begin to form and keep them in place. I shudder to think how painful this was for him...and for Heaven only knows how long. :( Fracture of the Rib in Dogs - Page 1 Looks like he is going to be on crate rest for some time. |

They are concerned about these ribs floating as they could still puncture a lung. not to mention he has no protection on that side with no ribs. :( Just beyond sickening. Oh...there is no doubt that he suffered something very traumatic. That was not a simple injury to do that kind of damage. |
What a sweet little boy...I do hope they can help him. Thank you Ladyjane for all you do. I will pray for a successful surgery and speedy recovery. Bless his heart, poor baby..... |
