My yorkie passed away after being spayed I just got my year old yorkie spayed, on Monday I was told by my vet that she had done well and was recovering well. I picked her up at 4:30 pm brought her home and she slept til about 8:00pm. I tried giving her water and tried to feed her but she refused both. I gave her rimadyl for pain and she fell asleep til 11:30 and was moaning in pain. I called the vet and was told it was normal and that all dogs react different. She got up at 9:00 am and drank water and used the restroom and seemed Okay. At about 12:15 she started crying so I took her to the same vet they immediately took her to the back to be checked. The vet came out and told me that she thought that my dog wasn't responding well to the pain killers and they were going to give her a shot of morphine and send her home with painkillers. The vet recommended blood work, about half an hour later the vet came and told me that my dog had stopped breathing and they had to perform CPR and had machines breathing for her. She said my dogs body went into shock from the surgery and she devolved pancreatitis and her heart was going into shock and she didn't think she was going to make it. She then asked if I wanted to euthanize her or allow her to pass on her own. She walked out of the room and said she would give me a minute and walked back in saying that my dogs heart had stopped. I was in shock and was upset. I loved my Ally more than anything in this world and wanted some kind of closure of how she passed away. Nothing made sense to me in how it all happened right away and nothing could be done to save her. I've looked every where for answers |
OMG! I am so sorry!!! did they do pre-op blood work? maybe there was something going on with her before surgery!!! OH! I can't even begin to imagine what you are going through right now!! {{{{{HUGS}}}}}} |

I am so sorry about your loss. I would be wanting some answers. Bless your heart, I know how bad it hurts to lose one. RIP sweet baby girl. |
I am so sorry for your loss. Rest in peace Ally. |
I am soooooooo very sorry for the loss of your baby. If it was me, I would want an autopsy done at A&M. I would want answers as to what could have possibly gone wrong. I would want to know if there was something wrong with the baby that was not picked up with pre op blood work. I would want to know if there was something done, or not done, intra-operatively, that contributed to the pups demise. I would want be sure and see toxicology tests...what and how much pain medicine did that baby have on board....this is just me...I like answers to devastating outcomes. I am not placing blame or insinuating anything about anything that the vet may or may not have done...I just would want answers......I do not understand how that baby started to deteriorate so rapidly....something initiated that decline....You can tell your vet, if you do not want to risk "hurting his feelings or insulting him" you need an autopsy at A&M in order to get an unbiased opinion from an independent source, to give to your breeder for possible partial refund or replacement pup.....I would suggest you do this.... |
I am so sorry for your loss |

I am so very very sorry for your loss. I do so agree with what YorkieMom posted. Even way before I was a breeder, I always wanted to know 'why". I do so hope your heart heals. RIP sweet one. |
I am so sorry for the loss of your precious baby girl. So tragic. Rest in peace, little one. |
I'm very sorry for your loss. How terrible. |
I am so sorry for the loss of your sweet baby girl. :( I also agree with Yorkiemom1, get answers. I know your heart is broken, and the pain you must be feeling. Sending you hugs and prayers. |
Oh no. I am so sorry for the tragic loss of your girl Ally. Sending hug's to you during this difficult time. |
I am so sorry:( You said they were going to give her morphine, maybe it was too much for her, in combination with the other drug? Or she was having a reaction to the Rimadyl? I hope that you can get some answers:( |
This is too SAD!!! I'm keeping you in my thoughts and prayers!!!! It scares me that some vets don't take into consideration that yorkie's are tiny and they can't take the same doses as other dogs. Not that this happened in your situation. Our baby had a horrible reaction to her shots in March because she was given 5 shots at once and she weighs just under 4 lbs it took weeks for her to recover, but what happened to sweet Ally is way worse. It breaks my heart!!!. . . . RIP sweet Ally . . . . |
Now I am scared. I had an appointment to get my 8 month old Zoe spayed and then she went into heat so I had to cancel and I have rescheduled. I have put it off because of this very reason and now I am uptight again. I am so sorry you lost your baby. I can't even imagine. |
Im so sorry for your loss |

This is what worries me. Gracie is only 4 lbs, and I can't for the life of me get her spayed. It scares me too. I am so sorry for what happened to little Ally. My heart just breaks. |
So sorry for your loss. :( |
"This is what worries me. Gracie is only 4 lbs, and I can\'t for the life of me get her spayed. It scares me too. I am so sorry for what happened to little Ally. My heart just breaks. " It is imperitive that if you own a small dog, a toy dog, but especially a Yorkie, you must know if your vet is experienced in caring for small dogs, toy breeds, and if you have one that specializes in Yorkies, you have struck a gold mine! A vet is not a vet is not a vet....They all have general vet knowledge, but it is just like any human doctor....you take your infant to a pediatrician......a doctor that specializes in babies and children....they specialize in the special requirements of babies....When I have my new owners talk with a vet they are looking at to take care of their baby, a couple of the questions is how many Yorkies do you see in your office monthly/annually. How many toy breeds are seen monthly/annually? Is there a vet on staff that specializes in toy breeds or even Yorkies? These are important attributes to look for in your vet. There are definate differences in these toy breeds/small dogs, and Yorkies have additional traits and idiosyncrisies that require special knowledge. |
