Sammy needs your prayers... I just got back from Texas A&M. Sammy started having problems voiding this afternoon, so I took him to my vet and she found that his bladder had slipped back into that hernia again. :( He just had surgery for this in June. Anyway...they admitted him as an emergency and the soft tissue surgeon will be calling me in the morning with details about what they will be doing.....they did tell me that he will be having surgery tomorrow. The vet in emergency mentioned a couple of things but said that the main surgeon would be consulting with others tomorrow and they will develop a plan. I am just sick over this. While Sammy does weather the storm pretty well it is just so sad that he must once again have surgery. Most of you know his history...for those interested, Sammy is one of my fosters who has been through so much this past year that I have had him. He has multiple neurological issues, but is quite the stoic little guy. Here is a thread about him: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ro-issues.html Please, please say prayers for Sammy. I will update tomorrow when I know more about what the plan is for him. |
Oh no! Poor Sammy! Sending prayers for him for a successful surgery and quick recovery... |
I am so sorry to hear this, Linda. Poor Sammy. He has been through a lot. He is so blessed to have you watch over him. He is with good doctors. I pray that surgery will be a permanent success this time around and for a fast recovery. |

Thank you, all of you, so much for your kind words...and prayers. It is so comforting to know that prayers are being said for little Sammy. I just spoke with the surgeon. They are basically going to do the same procedure as last time but will attach the bladder in a different area. The last time they attached it to the side of the abdominal wall....and also the colon was attached on the other side. He explained that with the colon, they actually cut into it so that the bonding occurs...but with the bladder they cannot do that because the wall is thinner; so, they do a scraping that is meant to irritate it and hope that it will bond. Apparently that did not work....so this time they will attach it to another area....in the front of the abdominal wall (the linea alba). This area is more amenable to this procedure but they don't like to do it because if a pup needs surgery in the future and the surgeon does not know the bladder is attached there, then they can actually cut into the bladder. I assured him that anyone who might adopt Sammy will be very aware of this. He suggested that if he ever needs surgery that it really should be done at A&M since they have all of his history and will be aware of this procedure. He has spoken with his colleagues and they all agree that going back in and trying to repair the hernia is too risky. He feels very confident that this procedure will work. He is planning on doing the surgery later today since a couple of other cases have come in that are priority. He said that if they get any emergencies up there today, then Sammy may end up being put off until tomorrow. :( I am so hoping they get it done today. |
