7 week old puppy - bloody diarrhea / swollen abdomen My newest tiny little yorkie girl is starting to develop some issues. She started having diarrhea when I brought her home Saturday night. She came from the breeder with a distended abdomen already, but I didn't think anything of it. It could be because of the change of diet, I switched her over from pedigree canned to Taste of The Wild Puppy solid food. It is now Monday and her diarrhea now has blood in it. Due to a severe foot injury and hubby working out of town, I can't get her in to the vet for a few days until I can drive again. Please....anybody have suggestions? |
Call a friend and have them drive you to the vet. If you have no friends, call a cab. A 7 week old yorkie with bloody diarrhea needs to see a vet immediately! |
A few days may be too late. |
Any ideas of what the problem could be? No vomiting and she's acting playful, active, and happy. She eats and drinks just fine.... I can see if I can get someone to help me get her to the vet, but unfortunately everyone I know works....(same hours as the vet since it takes everyone a while to get home). |
could be giardia or some other parasite, could be the abrupt change in diet, could be stress with the new environment, could be dozens of things. VET!!! |

It could be worms, parvo, giardia, coronavirus, ingestion of a foreign object, etc....it could be ANYTHING. But a 7 week old yorkie puppy with diarrhea can go downhill VERY quickly. If it was a newborn human infant would you hesitate & wait a few days to seek treatment??? This pup is a BABY. |

I thought that they are able to be weaned away from mom at 6 weeks, and she'll be 8 weeks in 2 days. I didn't consider that to be too young.... I will try to get into the vet tomorrow. She is behaving normally so she should be fine through the night until tomorrow. I can't really get anyone to come and drive me to the ER vet at 10:30 at night and drag two babies under 2 years old out of bed.... |

For future reference, min age to leave mom is 12 weeks. The problem is, dogs by nature will hide all pain. Its in their genes not to show weekness as the weekest member of the pack is kicked out, or killed. Yorkies, while no longer wild animals, still instinctively hide their pain. They don't show pain/illness until it's so bad they cant hide it anymore. In other words, until it's too late. I just really want you to see how absolutely urgent this situation is. |
Wow...please tell me how to unsubscribe. A puppy is a puppy....NOTHING comparable to a human baby. Yes, I would go to great extents for my children. I don't understand how people can become such activists for animals to the point that they value the welfare of a pet over an actual human child (or even compare the two). I love my pets. If this were an emergency situation where she was inactive, unresponsive, or otherwise acting abnormally I would make it work. But this puppy is only having issues with diarrhea. This would hardly be a situation that would require inconveniencing friends and family to have someone watch the children and/or take them out of our home to an emergency vet 30 miles away. |
I agree with your thoughts to an extent. If it was a case of simple diarrhea for a pup over 10 months old. I personally would wait to take the pup to the vet the next day, while monitoring their water intake all night. But, you said it was bloody diarrhea for a 7 week old yorkie. They can dehydrate quickly. You came here for advice, and advice was given. Its not always what you expect. At the end of the day, whatever happens to this pup is entirely up to you. |

You asked for advice and got an answer,it is up to you to act on the advice. |

Now Please do yourself & most importantly that puppy a favor & don't close your account as you NEED to stick around & read all over YT so that you can educate yourself on how to properly care for the life you chose to bring home. |

This puppy is totally dependent on you just like a baby is so yes you can compare the two. My baby of 6 months had loose stools one day which is not at all normal for her. I took her to the vet right away and she was diagnosed with Giardia. The vet said I did a very good thing to bring her in right away as they can dehydrate so easy. If you don't want the responsibility to take care of your tiny puppy that is totally dependent on you then find someone to give her to that is. Blood in the stools? Don't wait another minute. I'm sorry you don't like the advise, but you asked and there are some very experienced yorkie owners on here that have been through all kinds of trauma so listen up if you are a responsible owner. |
It is funny how if the advice isnt exactly what the op wants to hear sometimes they get offended and want to leave |
TO WHOMEVER SENT ME A PM ON FACEBOOK THREATENING MY LIFE AND MY FAMILY....IT IS NOT FUNNY AND I HAVE NOTIFIED THE POLICE. THEY WILL BE COMING HERE IN AN HOUR TO FILE A THREAT REPORT! I cannot believe the people on here would actually threaten our lives because I didn't get a sick puppy to the vet last night. She is fine this morning and will be brought to the vet in an hour. THIS IS BY NO MEANS AN EXCUSE TO THREATEN THE LIFE OF MYSELF AND MY 3 CHILDREN |
You people are going to the extent to threaten the life of myself and my family due to a sick puppy post? I just received a threat through facebook and I've only posted about her on this site.... |
I personally would like to know who the breeder is. Surely they knew something was not right with this pup. Hope you can get her to the vet soon and that she will be okay. |
If you wait until the pup is unresponsive, it's going to be too late. If this puppy dies, it will be YOUR fault, and I also lay part of the blame on the crappy breeder that sold you this dog at HALF the age it should be to leave Momma, and with a distended abdomen. Greedy. I wish your puppy well and hope you do the right thing. |
UPDATE - Gastroenteritis (on flagyl for the next 10 days) |
Now, were the threats on my facebook account personal messages and the belittling worth it due to an upset tummy from gastroenteritis? Please delete my personal info regarding where I live and cab services nearby KazzyK810. I don't really like having the well being of myself and my children threatened due to this on facebook. |
Oh and KazzyK810, please delete the information for the cab services since someone looked me up on facebook and threatened myself and my family. None of you really need to know what city and state I live in.... |
Please delete the information about the cab service KazzyK810 since it contains personal information that apparently led someone to my facebook account to threaten me. |
With how all of you treated me between last night and this morning, I truly cannot see how my puppy and dogs have survived it in my home. They sleep in bed with me at night, have a wardrobe of dresses, tutus, shirts, bows, ribbons, get a high quality dog food not some grocery store brand, receive veterinary prescription heartworm and flea preventative, and get the best veterinary care. I own my own home outright (paid in full), I have my own vehicle, I can take care of my pets. There are some people who have no right to own a pet because they can't afford their own bills. You're right, I need to stick around here to get "advice" which is belittling and demeaning by people who don't know me and misjudged the situation....not to mentioned threatened my family. Unbelievable.... |

I don't know what "a puppy is a puppy" actually means, bc it doesn't resonate with me. I'm guessing from the rest of the 1st post above, that you mean as compared to other living creatures...specifically humans. Again, it's absolutely your prerogative to value one creature over another - however, not all people feel that way, especially not on a dog forum, ya know :)? I value the lives of animals in such a way that I'm sure other people think I'm weird - but that's who I am, and that's what I feel in my heart is their value. Yorkie puppies w/ diarrhea can die within the same day - we've seen it here a hundred times. Maybe it helps to know that history when trying to understand how passionate everyone became about your pup. But, it really is true that puppies are extremely fragile - I mean, the pup you have has only been in existence for what...6 or 8 weeks? Correlate that age to how fragile a human baby is the first 6mths of life. I got my Marcel when he was 4mths old - he was very small. About 2wks later, he contracted giardia and could've died. I got him to the vet after 1 day - and he had to be on IV fluids etc bc his body couldn't adequately deal with the illness w/ the age of his immune system. Had I posted on here for a couple days instead of bringing him to the vet, he wouldn't be here curled up in my lap right now. That's why people get upset here, bc that's what we've seen many times over. The bottom line is - you got your baby to the Vet, and she will be okay now. Personally, I would've gotten her there sooner, but you were lucky. All I can say is - I'm super grateful that she is okay and that she is still with you. Keep her close, and err on the side of caution...and it should be okay. You won't regret being overly cautious, but you could definitely regret not being cautious enough, ya know? |
