What can cause these symptoms? A healthy Yorkie all of sudden startes to have liquid diarreha and vomiting..lots of it. Becomes very weak and starts passing blood at first red then becoming a dark purple red. Within 12 hours of starting these symtoms she dies. She has always been healthy is 5 years old and was with three other yorkies.

Oh, I am so sorry to hear this happened! I wouldn't know but what did the vet say caused this? Was this your dog?

First of all, I sincerely hope this is not something YOU have just endured....if it is, I am so sorry.... am NOT a vet, but it really sounds like HGE.....what did the vet say....it happens soooooo suddenly, have you even caught your breath yet??? I am so sorry if this is your issue.......

Yes it happened to us last night. When I called her vet he said it probably a stomach virus to take away the food give her Pepto. I called him a few hours later when the stool was blood. He still didn't think it was anything serious. I am just lost she was the sweetest girl her two brothers are lost without her.

I'm sorry for your loss and realize that things unfortunately sometimes tragically happen. There are a host of reasons this could have happened. Are you having a necropsy done? The only reason I ask is because you have other pups at home and it may be vital information to have; especially, because/if they are littermates.

I'm concerned with your Vets response to your calling reporting blood both fresh (red) and old (dark purple)...these are never good signs. Personally I would not return to this vet.

:( How tragic!! Really shocked that this vet wasn't appropriately concerned. Sounds like HGE and he should have suspected that. Still might not have been able to save the pup but certainly should have tried.

I am so sorry to hear about this! My schnauzer had a bout of HGE just over a week ago, symptoms just like you described...but luckily I was able to get her to a vet immediately, and my vet recognized what it was and had us to the Ontario Vet College emergency room within 45 minutes. Even with this quick action, I almost lost her :( The good news (such as it is), is that if it IS HGE, its not contagious and your other pups should be fine...but I would definitely find a new vet :mad: The first thing my vet said to me when I called and said my girl was vomiting and had bloody diarrhea was I was to get her to a vet hospital ASAP.

Having said all that, watch your others like a hawk (as I'm sure you will), because although HGE is not contagious, there are instances when it occurs in more than one dog in the home...and since HGE doesn't have a clear cause....it really is a mystery.

My condolences on your loss...5 years is definitely not long enough!

You know, when we call vets and they do not respond appropriately, it very easily can end up costing us our baby's life....the sad thing is, we put our trust in them, we expect them to KNOW what is happening.....a while back, I took a tremendous amount of negative heat because I personally will call my new owner's vet and speak with them, just to see if I feel they are adept and knowledgable working with small dogs. People were stunned and amazed and very hostile that I did this. When breeders and rescue people have been doing this for sooooo many years, fact is, we KNOW a tremendous amout about what to do and what not to do, what can be looked over and what needs immediate attention. You had no idea the information the vet was giving you was totally inappropriate....you had trusted this vet and he held your baby's life in his hands....and he fumbled. THIS is why I question the vets who my people place their baby's life in their hands. I can only recommend my owners maybe find another vet, I can not MAKE them do it....but I can get a very good idea how safe MY baby will be, going to this vet. So, if you ever have a breeder that seems to be getting all involved with your vet business, dont judge her harshly...it could very well save your babys life. ANYTIME YOU HAVE BLOOD COMING FROM YOUR BABY, NO MATTER HOW LITTLE OR HOW SLOWLY, CONSIDER IT AN EMERGENT SITUATION....IF YOU CAN NOT GET A VET CONCERNED ENOUGH TO EVEN LOOK AT THE BABY, YOU GO TO AN EMERGENCY CLINIC IMMEDIATELY (WHEN THEY OPEN, USUALLY AT 6PM) Bright red blood is lower GI bleeding...dark red/purple is higher up....more than a teaspoonful is an emergency, seek help immediately. Shame on that vet.....I am sooooo very sorry for your loss.

I'm very surprised at the vet's reaction! Usually a lot of vomiting & diarrhea can cause dehydration & that can lead to death itself pretty quickly in a small dog and adding the blood would cause most vets immediate concern.

I don't know what it was but as previously posted, could be HGE or any number of things - which is why that vet's reaction is amazing. Hopefully, you can find a new vet for your other dogs as you've probably lost trust in this one.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. You must be stunned & lost feeling at what happened. I pray you can get through these next days knowing that whatever happened, at least your little one is no longer suffering and is at peace. R.I.P., sweet baby.

I just read about HGE in another post....I'm sooo very sorry for your loss. I'm truly stunned by the vets lack of concern, he really dropped the ball on this one. I'm sure you are just devastated by this , i know i would be....others have said it isn't contagious...but keep an eye on your other ones. That poor baby! R.I.P. little one.

HGE is common in small dogs, any vet that treats small dogs should be aware of those symptoms and never ignore them.

Could it also possibly have been parvo? In that case it is highly contagious...please watch your other babies carefully....I am so sorry to hear this happened to you. May your little one rest in peace...

This vet is not her regular vet, he was the one on call for emergencies. What is HGE I am not familar with this.
