Bloody Diarrhea - Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis (HGE) in Dogs Here is a link that provides some information. I'm still not sure if this was your dog. but my deepest condolences on your loss. Sorry big or small dog, vomiting, diarrehea, and blood in the stool, is a emergency situation; and as an owner you need to treat as such; no matter what your general vet might or may not advise. |
I'm so sorry! That is heartbreaking.:( |
I'm kind of interested in what the vet said once you told him your dog died. |
I am so sorry for your loss. Shame shame on that vet! |
So very sorry for your loss. Seems like since that vet was on call for emergencies, why didn`t he treat this like one. You would think any time an animal bleeds, it definitely is an emergency. |
I am so sorry for your loss. Rest in peace little one. I probally be at that :animal-pavet's office when he is open. sound's like he cost you your pet's life. |
I have talked to 3 vets and they all agree that it was probably HGE. I live about 80 miles from the nearest emergency center and none of them thought she could have even been saved because of how fast she went. They all agreed they would have thought it was a stomach virus because several in our family has had it this past week and it is going around the community dogs & humans both. Thanks to each of you for the help and kind words. |
I am so sorry for your loss. It does sound like HGE, I have been thru this. I dropped everything and got my Allie to Vet ASAP. Could she have possibly gotten hold of something toxic? |
I am so sorry for your loss. I thank you for sharing this with us, your tragedy could save a life. |

Again my condolences. I assume no necropsy was done; so you don't know the actual cause of death? HGE is not the stomach flu at all. And no vet should diagnose a condition sight unseen and over a phone. Despite my respect with the veterinary profession in this case and given the symptoms you described, as a dog owner and breeder, I would be on my way to the emergency hospital even if it is an hour and 1/2 drive away. At least I would have given my dog an eight hour opportunity for life in the care of specialists. Vomitting, diarrehea, and Blood in the stool, accompanied by observed and obvious weakness is an Emergency Situation. I would continue to advise my puppy owners of the same. And if their general vet does not want to see them, I'm off to the emergency hospital. I hope that your family heals from this loss, it is such a shame to lose a dog so young. What is done is done in your case; but as many others read these Emergency threads, I did feel the need to put out an Alternative point of view for this situation you found yourself in. |
