i too have no advice but i would like to offer my prayers too. Feel better soon Tibbe |
Who knows what it is and where it came from.. But t does seem it is bothering him.. If you and your vet are fairly certain it is acid related, pepcid should not hurt anything. I don't mean long term to cover up a problem, but maybe a few days.. Worth talking to vet about. I want to say Ellie's dose is 2.5mg. It has been awhile though. I use reglAn now. Dogs can take quite a few meds made for people. |
Jeanie, read this link: How to Treat Prednisone Side Effects in Dogs on Steroid Therapy | Suite101.com Steroids do upset their tummies. Perhaps the dose can be adjusted to make him more comfortable. My vet used to tell me to give pepcid for an acidy tummy. It was just something that we would give very seldom though. It wasn't a frequent thing. What I think it does is break that constant chain of acidity and then they are ok usually. However, since Tibbe is taking the steroid, I think that is what is causing his tummy problem. |
Tibbe had his second meal of Hill's I/D this morning about 8:40 a.m., about 2 1/2 tablespoons & so far, tummy soft, no gurgling, no clinginess or isolation attempts, no bad smelling gas, he's playful, ears/tail up & he's baiting me for play, carrying his chew bone around and putting it down, growling at me, picking it back up & running away. He had his first meal of Hill's I/D last night & he did the same after it. He did burp about 9:30 a.m., seemed to swallow, lick so we are going to the vet today about Pepcid & to pick up some Royal Canin Gastrointestinal, which I get the impression might be a better food than the Hill's and it is what his vet prescribed Monday - should he continue to have problems. I already had some Hill's from his February pneumonia bout, so after his problems after his regular food yesterday morning, I rolled out the Hill's can for his evening meal. Boy, so far, it has really made a difference in how he does after meals. Now if we can get reflux treatment, maybe he'll get back to being Tibbe - the little fireball. Since he took his last dose of Prednisolone last Friday night, hopefully its side effects on his tummy will be gone soon. I'm feeling so encouraged again. |
I am thinking about you and your darling little boy. I hope he continues to do well on the new food and that all of his stomach problems subside. I hope your pain has subsided, as well. The love you share with Tibbe is really special. |
Tibbe has been a happy boy today - I was in less good shape so we put off going to the vet again until tomorrow when the regular vet is back. He's eaten his Hill's I/D twice today & no problems afterward either meal. He's been up & about all day, playing, barking, a nice, soft tummy & maybe only one burp today but after barking alot, he did have some reverse sneezing. He's had a few bouts of that in the last couple of weeks. I've read it can indicate an irritated esophagus - more reason to think he's having reflux. He's about 95% Tibbe again - only lacking that extreme, over-the-top type energy he seemed to put into everything he did in the past. I did not give him his nausea medication today as he didn't seem to be feeling bad, mopey, head/tail down, wasn't spitting up or refusing water or food. Since today was his first big day, I think he's tired. He's sleeping right here beside me on the couch. It's good to have him almost back!!! If we get the okay tomorrow, he'll start on some Pepcid & hopefully |
Jeanie so glad to hear Tibbe is on the mend. Hope you feel better soon too. Hugs |
Sounds like Tibbe is doing very well. I hope you are better tomorrow.:) |
glad he is feeling better. Now take care of yourself!! |
Awww, darling Tibbe:love: So glad to hear that he seems to be improving daily:) I wonder if the vet should maybe let you stick with the ID food, since it seems to be agreeing with him, at least for now. I'd hate to see a switch in foods disrupt everything again. Just mho;) Thanks for the update:D!! |
:cheer: Yeay Tibbe!! Keep up the good work, glad to hear you are getting better!! Peanut and I are still praying and sending good thoughts for you and your Momma!! XOXOXO |
Went to the vet & got the okay to start the Pepcid AC, 1/4 of the pill once daily, so we did. Started the Royal Canin Gastrointestinal today also. Since his Interceptor had run out, he had to start on Heartguard Plus yesterday. So he's had a few changes happening, not just to his food but taking the meds, taking the Heartguard & with the vet visit, he's acting a bit tired today, plus he refused his usual kibble "treats" this morning & afternoon (he gets 2 pieces of kibble for going potty outside) - and refusing those are extremely rare for Tibbe. To be sure we weren't looking at any chest involvement again after his February bout of pneumonia - likely from aspirated spit-up or vomit it was thought, the vet listened to his chest today & there is no evidence he aspirated anything when he spit up Monday. His new ramp came today but I'm too tired to take it from the box & set it up, after PT & grocery shopping, so we'll have to leave that til this weekend. I sure hope the Pepcid & the Royal Canin will help to set him to rights again. I know he hates not feeling up to par & it sure worries me. Hopefully, tomorrow will be better. |
Hoping and praying Tibbe continues to feel better... |
I think he'll be ok. Probably just those changes that kept him a bit under the weather. I hope he'll be back to being himself tomorrow. Take care of yourself, too.:) |
IDK. His tummy is all puffed up again today, not soft, & he isolated at least part of the night - sleeping down the hall in the den. Scared me to death when I woke & he wasn't there in the bed. He does that when he's not feeling well. Maybe he's just had too many quick food changes lately. Vet said to go straight to the Royal Canin G-I since he was out of Hill's I/D(only had the 1 can of that, which we switched straight to in order to alleviate his gas from eating his old kibble). He just had a normal pee/poop this a.m. & they did check him again yesterday for G-I parasites & he's negative for anything so his tummy distention isn't from worms. The vet said yesterday he may continue to overeat from the Prednisolone for yet another week & his side effects from that Rx should be up by this Friday - 2 weeks after his last dose. I just don't know. He ate quite a bit of the RC G-I yesterday after we got home - probably 1/2 cup from noon - but his tummy was okay feeling last night, though he was tired - went to bed at 7:00 p.m. He hasn't eaten breakfast yet today & I'm thinking food is probably the last thing he needs right now. He's just laying around right now. I'm going to call the vet once more to see what to do. Poor Tibbe has had a rough time of it. |
Poor little baby......I hope he gets to feeling better and stays that way....this roller coaster ride is not only tuff on Tibbe, it is gut wrenching on YOU....keep us posted on what the vet says this am....continuing to pray for resolution of little Tibbe's problem! |
Well, at least he's not spitting up, vomiting or having diarrhea - just lying about & turns his head when I offer him anything to eat. His tummy has gone down & is softer feeling now with no gassy or loud bowel sounds. I tried offering him his kibble & even offered some of my sherbet to him - wouldn't have let him eat it but wanted to see if he would try it. He turned his head - normally he would have tried to eat it. Both vets in surgery this morning so I haven't heard back yet but am about to give him some of his Cerenia for nausea if I don't hear soon. Also, can't recall how often vet said to give Pepcid so am waiting to hear about that, too. I was a mess at the vet yesterday as I' really had a bad time with the hip yesterday morning, could barely walk or get about, even on the cane. That, plus worrying something really bad could be wrong with Tibbe didn't help my mush brain. If all this is from those 11 doses of Prednisolone, the last one being 6-1-12, I'm sure grateful he doesn't have to take that stuff daily. |
I'm sorry that Tibbe is still up to par. On the Pepcid it's usually given very 12 hours. I think the bloating tummy may be because he trapped gas and air in there and it has to work it's way out. Prayers still being said for Tibbe. |
I think its trapped air, too, but just wonder why it keeps recurring & making him so lethargic when it comes. |
I know with my late Molly who had Chronic Pancreatitis she would have that happen a lot. My Vet did OK me giving her the Baby Gas Dops. It did help her a lot. |
I have some Gas - X - going to ask vet if I can give an equivalent dose of that, I think. But why it keeps happening is worrying. |
Vet said just leave him be today as it could be the Pepcid and if still not eating & sleeping a lot tomorrow, call & we'll go from there, said only give him 1 dose per day. I did Google Pepcid canine side effects - though rare, they are lethargy & loss of appetite. |
When we had our rottie, Macie, she had a bout of diarrhea, upset stomach and were told to give her Pepto Bismol. Might be something to ask the vet about as it worked great for our Macie. That said, I do hope Tibbe gets well soon! I will be sending good thoughts and praying for Tibbe to! |
Well, Tibbe tends to constipation, if anything & his only bout of diarrhea in 4 years of having him was 3-11-12 after he ate some marinaded chicken bites. Pepto-Bismol seems to shut him down, if you get my drift, so, since he has nausea medication, I hesitate to use anything more for nausea. I'm not even sure he is really nauseated. He hasn't spit up any foam since Monday but thought I'd try that medication today in case he was nauseated & that was why he'd refused food most of the day. It seems like today's problems may - may just be due to taking the Pepcid with its known side-effects of lethargy & appetite suppression & the change in his diet once again causing some tummy distention. Should he have diarrhea, I might ask the vet if okay to give him some Pepto. He finally ate 1/4 cup of his Royal Canin G-I after I soaked it in warm water this afternoon. He played some outisde then went right back to bed after his today's dose of Pepcid. He's been asleep since, though he's easily aroused. I've seen no burping/belching followed by the swallowing/licking since he started the Pepcid & no reverse sneezing either. If Pepcid would make me sleep like it does him, I might start taking it at night! |
Ashley took 2.5 mg of Pepcid twice a day, and she also took baby gas-x, and Reglan. Ashley had Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and she also had a great deal of gas from taking in too much air into her belly due to a collapsing trachea. I know this is breaking your heart, Jeannie, but Tibbe is going to be okay. I took prednisilone this year for a bad bout of bronchitis. I had a lot of side effects, and I needed to stop taking it (which you have to do graually). It made me really sick, and that could be what's happening to poor Tibbe. It also caused terrible acid, but I already have acid reflux. I sure hope Tibbe starts to feel better. I had to wait a while until the medicine got out of my system. I know you are worried and want to find out what's wrong with him; I understand how you feel and I pray that he gets better. Katie and I are sending hugs for you and Tibbe. |
He'll be ok. It sounds to me as though he's starting to do better. It just takes time. I hope you have a good night's sleep tonight.:) |
I had to sign back on & tell you. Tibbe just woke me & demanded some food! After he ate late this afternoon, I thought maybe he was done as he had been sleeping most of the rest of the evening & night & sure didn't want any food earlier today. I gave him some more Royal Canin Gastrointestinal dry kibble(he eats that slower than the canned food) & he ate it - every bit of the 1 1/2 tablespoons I gave him. I didn't want him to get all full feeling again so didn't feed him much & he did eat to bulging this afternoon. But he woke hungry, I guess, I pawed me until I woke, then guided me to the kitchen & looked at the cabinet where his food is kept. So we both had midnight snacks & I had to get on & celebrate this good news. He went right back to sleep. Nobody but you all would understand how excited this is to me so had to share! Well, I'm signing off again & going to get a much better night's sleep than I've had in a while I think. Ya'll are so great giving me the encouragement & ideas such as the baby gas drops & telling me about the OTC Pepcid & Pepto plus the many other things you've tried & experienced with your little ones going through similar times with Prednisolone, etc. I'm definitely on the up rollercoaster tonight - or this morning guess I should say. |
So glad Tibbe had an appetite and let you know he was hungry. That's very cute how he told you what he wanted. They surely can talk!:) |
So glad Tibbe is doing better :) |
Tibbe woke me throwing up his late night snack just a while ago - not all of it from the looks but there were some food chunks & liquid. But after he went potty one/two outside & all was "normal", he asked for his food & ate a few bites of his RC G-I dry kibble & is acting pretty normal, looking around, looking out the den window, growling at the neighbor mowing sounds. Vet not in on Sunday until a little later so will have to wait & see what they say to do. He doesn't seem so sleepy this morning as he did yesterday. |
