Somi's LP Surgery Tomorrow Somi has her LP surgery tomorrow. (10 month, <4lb parti female) I am getting super nervous even though I feel like the surgeon she is going to is really great. (Dr. Beale at Gulf Coast Vet recommended by ladyjane). She is also getting spayed and having three of her baby teeth that haven't fallen out pulled. They said this would be okay to do all at the same time, and she will probably be okay but I'm not sure I will be okay seeing her be in so much pain. :( But on a less nervous note question. I have been planning on giving her a really good bath tonight since she won't be able to have one for awhile after the surgery. And I have been grooming her on my own and I was wondering what other peoples thought are on if I should cut her hair shorter. It isn't that long now, I have only trimmed it once but would say it is longer than the normal "puppy cut." I was thinking maybe if all of it was a bit shorter than the shaved spots wouldn't look so weird when it was growing back. PLUS I would have to brush her so much while she is healing. (and shorter being still having 1-2 inches of hair NOT shaved to nothing) So just wondering (1) how much do they have to shave her for this surgery? and (2) do you think it would be better or worse to cut her shorter? Thanks. :) |
I will keep Somi in my prayers and you too. Pixie had her Lp surgery almost 2 years ago. She has a full silky coat. When I went to pick her up after surgery, the surgeon said she asked the tech"s to shave her leg and keep the body hair long, think comb over. So you couldn't tell if you looked at her until you moved her hair on her back end. I would probably wait and see what they do and once she is feeling better even her out. |
Before Callie had her LP surgery I had her shaved down pretty short because her hair grows pretty fast and by the time I would let her be groomed again over 2 months she looked like a miss cut stuffed animal lol poor thing they had to shave some of her back for the pain patch and then the leg getting the surgery and then her front leg a bit for an iv. I will keep your baby in my prayers. |
Prayers for a successful and uneventful surgery and quick recovery. |
Hi Ashley, totally up to you but Hot Rod's leg was shaved way down and it took quite some time for it to catch up the rest of his hair. It really wasn't too bad, I just was shocked when I picked him--I hadn't even thought about them shaving his leg. I think it took a few months and about 3 hair cuts before I could start evening out his hair. Thankfully it was almost spring. As a matter of fact his surgery was on March 31st. Good luck and I'll be sending good thoughts and prayers Somi's way. :) |
Try not to worry Somi will be as good as new:) Georgie (he is less than 4lbs as well) had all the procedures done at once and I felt it was better than putting him under multiple time. He has always had a puppy cut so it wasn't a huge difference but it did take awhile for the hair to grow back. Please keep us posted. |
Somi will be in great hands with Dr. Beale. I've heard so many great things about him and enjoy reading his articles. My dog had surgery recently and his leg was shaved down to the skin. I trimmed him into a puppy cut, and 8 weeks later, there is still hardly any hair growing back so he will need to be cut down again in order to keep it somewhat even. Good luck. |
Prayers going out for Somi's surgery tomorrow. Praying she has a quick recovery. |
Prayers for Somi's surgery and that she has a quick and uneventful recovery. |
Pre-Surgery Photo 1 Attachment(s) I decided to not cut her hair much. I cleaned her up a bit. She was already very sleepy and bath/grooming time always makes her extra sleep. Her hair is up a little, but since it probably wouldn't stay up all the way through all of the surgery things I decided not to make her deal with it for now. Her hair is really thin on top because her baby hair keeps coming out with matting. Her picture should be attached... Wish us luck...or more of keep us in your thoughts and prayers. :) |
Ashley, you and Somi will be in my thoughts and prayers. I am sure she will do very well and recover quickly! :) |
