Pink Dog I read your whole thread.. I am so proud that Cali has improved to the point that you are able to have her home where she belongs. I am so happy that you gave all the praise to MSU. We are so very lucky to live only 17 miles from this great place. There is just no way that I can say enough good things about ALL the people at the university. Both our furkids have been patients there at different times. We have an almost 12 year poodle that has been seen there several times. Also an almost 3 year old Yorkie that had 12 baby teeth removed there. They saved our 13 year old grand beagle`s life more than once. She ate a whole turkey carcass one Thanksgiving and two lbs of white chocolate another time... Sorry this is so long but one more plug for MSU...my husband, son, daughter, daughter-in-law and oldest granddaughter are all almuni....So yes we are all MSU "Dawg" fans... |

Regarding the shots, the vets would not say that was the cause but in my heart I must wonder what triggered her immune system. It could be virtually anything but having her rabies vaccine just 2 months earlier is creepy...especially when many other dog owners report the same type of symptoms. Good luck with your trip and please keep us updated (I'll check your thread out). |
I mentioned Cali to Dianne today when we were trying to get the appt. I will keep you posted. Cali is our inspiration!!! We hope Dessa does as well as Cali is doing!!! I'm keeping Cali in my prayers!!! |

UPDATE: Cali is doing well. She is settling in to her old routine. She has lost a bit of her spunk and her bark is slightly weak (could be from having the endo tube when they did the muscle biopsy). Regardless, she is so happy to be home. We are giving her so much love and attention that I almost feel guilty. She just gives us the most beautiful looks as if she is trying to tell us something. It's like, "Mom, read my mind please". So I offer water, a trip outside to potty, or a massage. I'll try to catch a pic of one of her "looks" and post it for ya'll. On a different topic....Allison (the first vet student that had Cali) called me tonight to check on her. It was so great to hear from her and know that she really cared. Not to mention Cali's regular vet has been in consistent contact with us. I wish I could have a vet for my doctor.....LOL! Thanks to all that have mentioned the potty pad systems as my husband & I are trying to decide what type to get at this time. I'll let everyone know and keep you posted as to how it works! |

I am thinking about Cali this morning and hoping she continues to improve. |

Oh wow....thank you so much! You really don't have to do that, we are going back on April 16th and I was planning to get something then. Just wasn't sure where the best place is to buy one. I'm thinking of going to the bookstore. |
How is Miss Cali today ? |
UPDATE: Cali is starting to get some of her attitude back (if I haven't already posted this). Today she barked at daddy when he got home b/c she was hungry. That's the first time in 3 weeks. She always feels she needs to let daddy know when to feed her. She is able to stand on her pads if not on a hard surface. We put them on carpet and she does much better. Daddy rigged up a camera so we can log onto our computers when at work to watch the babies in their room. I've noticed that her left front paw tremors alot, mainly after medicines when I do her exercises and relax her with a massage. It happens when she is falling asleep. Does anyone know if there are any side effects from her meds? Her meds: dilantin, prednisolone, valium, tramadol, pepcid. I hope I don't sound ungrateful but I feel down today. I feel almost like we don't know the full, true picture of what is going on with Cali. |
Some meds can cause shaking/ tremors. I do not believe that they have gotten to the bottom of this either. All the meds she's on may not even be needed. Not sure they can know she needs the meds if they don't know what's wrong with her. |

My choice to buy MSU things would be the bookstore or the Lodge. The Lodge is very easy to find..408 Hiway 12 is the address. Ask anyone and they will direct you there.. It is a huge store that has everything Maroon and White except as someone said, ice cream. |

i can say, though, its potent. opium based drugs always are. unfortunately i have had to use use more than tramadol in my time. i cant imagine having 4 other drugs in my system at the same time. im not trying to raise alarm at all, and i understand you are a nurse. but... as a person who has been force fed a few of these drugs , its not pleasant. cant imagine what a little dog feels like. positive note... a week or two, once that garbage gets out of the system, things will even out. that is some potent stuff. especially all at once. i hope she comes home, and i really hope the meds are reduced. side note... tramadol does not stop pain, it just makes you not really care if it hurts. it still hurts. if i could go back, and had a choice, id rather hurt that get tramadol forced on me. |
You aren't being ungrateful! You are being realistic. Your little girl is very sick and nobody seems to know exactly why. You may never know. Hopefully she continues to improve. While I'm not suggesting that she come off of any of her meds, it really just looks like they aren't really sure what they're treating for. While I can't tell you what's wrong with your girl, I would agree that they haven't gotten to the bottom of it. Any loving owner in this situation would be upset. If you are not comfortable with the plan that is in place, it is perfectly acceptable to get another opinion. |

I wish for you and hubby peace of mind, this whole thing has been awful for Cali and you both, all your feelings are valid. I really wish I could do something to help I feel like I know your family. I hope it gets better soon. I will keep praying for all of you. Please remember to go with your gut, as mothers intuition is always best. Team Cali still here for you. |
Still Praying for Cali. It is the rigidity that has me confused as in all my yrs as a tech if the cause would be coming from the brain or something that was from an immune disorder , the whole body would be affected. In Cali's case it is just her back end witch should be coming from the spine. |
4 Attachment(s) UPDATE: Cali remains in good spirits. She is such a smart little lovebug and her mommy is so proud of her. She's been using her pads....as long as they are on blankets or carpet. Thanks to Karen (Alldogboots) she has some socks and is able to walk on our regular floors...but I don't let her do too much b/c she gets worn out and she gets hot. I wish I had the strength of that little dog!!! Does anyone know how I can clean her beard easily without giving her a full bath? We have been wiping her beard but with the Dilantin being liquid and so sticky, her beard is not as clean as I'd like it. I normally use Johnson's baby shampoo but I'm wondering if there is anything rinseless for dogs or easy? Here are some pics of babygirl: Cali with her socks Attachment 365567 Standing on blanket Attachment 365568 Cali sitting on blanket with socks...ready to go... What's even more confusing is that she can actively (and passively) bend her legs so the rigidity isn't permanent. As a matter of fact, she often falls asleep when I do her passive ROM. Of course, I'm massaging her in between sets. She also has some abnormality in her front legs but isn't exhibiting the muscle rigidity (mainly a tremor in her left frong leg although it is intermittent). For some reason none of the vets felt it had to do with her spine. My primary vet has some questions that I am going to take back to the Neuro clinic at MSU when I go. I think I'm going to ask him about this as well. |
She is so adorable. My daughter did the (unthinkable) deed of cutting off the facial hair when her pup was on icky medicine. It does grow back:rolleyes: |

Tramadol and valium are both for pain aren't they? Maybe you could talk to your vet about reducing the dosage and see what the effect is. That does sound like alot of meds. Good thoughts going out to you all. |

Valium=antianxiety (relaxes muscles) She does well on them but I get sad when I think about how many meds she is taking now. I'm hoping in April when she gets her 4 week check that we will be able to reduce them. |

Sending Cali many well wishes and prayers for her continued healing. |
I am so glad that Cali is doing so well. She is so Beautiful!!! Her little socks are ADORABLE!!! I am keeping Miss Cali and your family in my thoughts and prayers!!! |
Awww Cali, shes so beautiful, little socks are too cute. I wld think some puppy shampoo on a washcloth to wipe her face and rinse the washcloth a couple times? I do this when my girls need to wear "the cone of shame". |
Scented baby wipes? |
Dry shampoo if you don't want to cut the little beard. Those pictures made me cry. Just seeing her and knowing what she's been and still is going through - she breaks my heart. But there she stands and that's a wonderful achievement for one and all involved! I wish all dogs had a loving parent like you. |
what a adorable little face, Im sorry for all that you guys have been, through, Im glad things are getting better. She is a lucky girl for such a good mommy and daddy |
