Keeping Louie in my prayers.

McheleM is RIGHT on target. This is exactly why I am a "closed breeder"...NO people are allowed on my property until after the babies are fully vaccinated.(My experience with Parvo cost me in excess of $18,000.00 in vet bills alone 8 years ago...but my vet saved two litters of puppies...they had everything from blood transfusions, to accupuncture to praying over them!) I give my breeding ladies NeoPar a week before they are bred. Neopar is not "over-ridden" by the mothers immunity, and provides the babies super protection...at 3 week of age, the babies are given NeoPar, and I start their vaccinations at 6 weeks. Virkon kills parvo virus, and I use it once a week THROUGHOUT my home, mopping floors and cleaning crates...it is used from ceiling to floor in my "Yorkie room", my nursery, and my kennel area once a month, ....once a month, I put it in a sprayer and spray my entire out door area where the kids all run and play...patio, flag stone areas, etc.....I will do ANYTHING I can possibly do to prevent subjecting my babies to this horrific disease, and my business to this devastating financial loss. When my buyers come to get their puppy, they walk on rugs that have been sprayed with Virkon (this is the same chemical you used to have to walk thru at all airports when mad cow disease was rampant overseas), they have to wash hands with sanitizer, and everyone is sprayed with Odo-ban before coming into the house, and surgical shoe covers are put on everyones shoes.......and they are only allowed as far as the dining room where we close the "adoption"....no one walks ANYWHERE any of my dogs are allowed to walk. I have only lost a couple of sales, by NOT allowing them to "TOUR MY FACILITY"! This is not a "facility", this is my private home!.......SMALL price to pay! McheleM, we are clearly unwilling members of the same club!!

This is a picture taken this morning when I got a chance to see him. He looks absolutely pitiful but he was actually looking better than he did the day before! We never got any phone calls on the test results but hopefully we will find out tomorrow about any more intestinal issues. Thank you all for your prayers! They are working!

when you are there, get his head to your chest, your heartbeat is comforting to him..he will know you love him..if you can, get him a Snugglepuppy! He is absolutely adorable, puppy prayers for Louie and family.

Also, please keep yourself well, eat, drink lots of water, breathe...this stress is a doozy and can wear you out fast. Your Louie is with a vet you trust, you are doing all you can to save the little guy and you are a wonderful puppy mommie!

Parvo takes 10-14 days to show up, so if you just got him. And he's showing symptoms, he had it before. We had our pup 3 wks and the vet said he probably got it from our yard-other dogs use the bathroom and owners leave it and the virus gets in the ground.


See if the vet will allow you to hold him. We did skin to skin contact (works for NICU babies) and I basically tucked him into my shirt and I rocked him and talked to him and sang to him and let him know how important he was to our family.

When Buster was in the hospital I brought him in the snuggle puppy as comfort. You could also bring an dirty tshirt or clothing that has your scent on it so he can have your smell to comfort him. He is adorable and you both are on in our prayers. Sending healing and strengthening prayer for Louie.

Hello all!
I'm sorry I couldn't get back to you all sooner on an update on my pup but it seems as if there was an issue with the system and my other account was deleted!
The veterinarian has called us four different times today giving updates on Louie. She says that he was very perky this morning and standing up and walking around but that he threw up twice and still hasn't eaten :( Tonight is supposed to be the last night he is in the hospital. I was feeling fine on the news that he is doing a little better until my mom called his trainer this afternoon. We had signed up for individual training sessions for him to begin sometime next month and she was waiting for a phone call to work out a schedule. When she heard about how he is in the hospital with Parvo she was horrified and said that its unfortunate but that we should have euthanized him as soon as we found out. She said that its too painful for the dog and that he isn't going to make it anyway! Hearing this brought tears to my eyes. I don't want to believe it. She said that he's only being sustained and that he will probably come home and then get sick again. Do you think that she's right? She said that her big rottweiler had it and was treated and still died. It really upset me that she said that and I don't want to believe it but maybe she's being realistic. I'm not going to give up on him!! Going to visit him first thing tomorrow morning. Doctor says that if things go well he should be able to leave by 2:00 tomorrow afternoon. Fingers crossed.

Although parvo is a nasty disease, I have read quite a few stories of dogs surviving it, especially when it was caught in time.

You sound like such a caring person and you really love your baby, so I know Louie has a fighting chance! You both are in my thoughts!!

NO you do not have to euthanize him!!!! If the vet feels he is doing better, he probably is! Let the vet advise you, not a dog trainer. There are many pups that survive parvo...it is not a given that he will not survive. I would not be in a hurry to bring him home though....he is very young. Does the vet really think he is ready to be at home?

Don't listen to the trainer's story..........the only story that matters right now, is yours, and you aren't giving up on that sweet baby!! You are doing the right thing, follow your heart!

NOT EVERY PUPPY RESPONDS TO THIS DISEASE THE SAME WAY! This is a devastating disease, but puppies DO survive it, and do not "come home and get sick and die anyway"!! Parvo virus can have adverse effects on organs in the baby's body, but that is NOT written in stone that it will happen, or to what degree it happens. I kept three of the puppies that had parvo 8 years ago....2 little girls I kept just because they were so little to begin with,but it has allowed me to follow their health curve closely. They are 8 years old and have NEVER had any adverse effects from their bout with parvo. One of the males I kept, developed an issue with tear ducts....apparently, the virus has "shut down" the tear duct in his left eye, so I do eye care on him twice daily, for the rest of his life...they tried to jump start the tear duct gland with Restasis ((the active ingredient in Restasis will occasionally work, but it didnt on him),,,,and his last visit shows a Grade 1 heart murmur has developed. Vet says this is a direct effect of the parvo. I closely follow the other babies, and they have had NO residual health issues. For a trainer to be so brutally "honest", but also incorrect, with an owner that is facing the turmoil you are facing now, I personally find uncompassionate and not productive. She may be speaking strictly from personal experience she had with the disease, but what she told you is NOT EVIDENCE BASED~I would change trainers. JUST BE SURE LOUIE IS READY TO COME HOME....HE MUST BE EATING AND KEEPING IT DOWN, AT THE VERY LEAST. DO NOT LET THE VET DISCHARGE HIM WHILE HE IS STILL SICK....THAT IS WHERE YOU ARE GOING TO RUN INTO PROBLEMS WHEN YOU GET HIM HOME. I hope you have "sterilized" your home and have either gotten rid of EVERYTHING that sick baby touched, or sterilized it with bleach and hot water. Good luck and dont take what that trainer said as gospel....she is wrong. It is a very tough disease, very costly, and the babies are very sick from the disease....but it CAN and DOES work out, and your Louie can survive this. DO NOT feel you are torturing him by trying to save his life.
