Yorkie Pup Has Parvo 1 Attachment(s) I just adopted my 2 month old Yorkie a week ago from someone who seemed very reputable to me!...but I guess not. I have grown to love him so much over these past few days that I've had him. Unfortunately, two days ago he started vomiting and would diarrhea after eating and drinking. At first I thought he might just have an upset stomach but after a night of getting sick every two or so hours I knew something wasn't right. I read online that sometimes puppies get very stressed out with all the changes living in a new home and that it will cause them to get sick and I was hopeful that was his only problem. I was up with him most of the night and he was looking worse and worse. The poor little thing would get out of his bed to drink water and would start to fall asleep with his head in the water dish which was worrying me that he could potentially drown himself! He was so weak. The next morning I fed him some Pedialyte in his water dish and also some Karo syrup for Hypoglycemia. I was happy when I realized that it'd been 3 hours since throwing up but it was short lived. He threw up all all of his pedialyte/water/karo syrup :( I took him to the vet and they ran tests which came back positive for Parvovirus. She told me the outlook was 50/50 in any dog and that it was a slim chance for him especially due to only weighing 2.4 lbs and being 8 weeks old. She said that this was most likely given to him from his mother. As I type he is currently on IV fluids being treated for dehydration, nausea, pancreatic inflammation, and being tested for various other things that could be wrong with him due to the Parvo. I'm so worried about my little baby :( he must be so scared right now. I didn't even get to say good bye to him at the vets office and I pray he doesn't die. He is being treated for 3 nights. This is the first night, I plan on visiting him in the morning. Does anyone else have a story to tell of their Yorkie puppy having Parvo? Did everything turn out Ok? Its hard to sleep knowing that he's so sick and is potentially on his death bed. |
Hi I sure hope your little one recovers. Don't know to much about Parvo and Yorkies. I did have a Pitt Bull pup make it through this awful disease many years ago. Either way I sure feel so bad for you and your little one. Saying prayers for the both of you |
I am so sorry. Poor little angel. Hopefully he will be ok...they can and do survive but do need to be treated by a vet with IV fluids. I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us updated. |
I am so sorry that you and your little man are going thru this. Did you call the breeder? I would be livid. The girls and I are sending positive thoughts your way and you are in my prayers! Tori |
Stay strong! Our friends' yorkie was also tested positive for Parvo, but he did survive. Think positive. |
stay strong I had a chihuahua that got parvo, about 14 years ago she made it but was older than your pup. Parvo is a nasty diease. Will be praying for you and your puppy. take care. Mugwee1 |
Now i Know you didnt know better but with a young pup never take a wait and see approach. If the pup has diahrea or vomiting always go right to the vet because it could be something serious like this and can be treated if caught early. I hope and pray he recovers |
Keeping you and your baby in prayer.....Be strong, they can survive this disease! Stay positive! |
I am so very sorry to hear about your little darling baby. I am praying that he pulls through this and makes a quick recovery. |
Sending prayers for you and your pup. I hope everything goes well. |
saying prayers for your little one's full and speedy recovery. i have never dealt with parvo in my pups personally, but i have read of others babies overcoming it on this site. please keep us updated and welcome to yorkietalk! |
Hope your visit with your puppy goes well this morning. What is his name? |
I am so sorry your little one is so sick. I am praying the treatments go well and he is on the road to recovery. I, too hope you notified the breeder especially if there is a chance his siblings may be infected as well. Please let us know when you are able how he is doing. |
Sending prayers. Hope this little one looks much better this morning |
To begin with, 8 weeks is too young for a pup to leave mom. And by 12 weeks, pup should have had at least 2 vaccines for parvo- not that it matters, puppies vaccinated fully can still get it. Just ask Kendra. Feel free to message me if you want. We have parvo experience. Please please please make sure he is treated with antibiotics. And continous IV fluids. If you vet will, add a probiotic to his food. Buy baby food in a jar, beechnut chicken and see if he will eat it. We got Noah at 8 weeks and he got parvo 3 weeks later. He weighed 1.6 lbs!! He never showed any signs or symptoms, we happened to be at the vet for other stuff and he had a reaction to his vaccines. We ended up spending 11 days at the vet, 7500 dollars in vet bills, 5 different antibiotics, a blood transfusion, etc all to save our pup. Parvovirus eats through the lining of their intestines and he will be very prone to secondary infections... Make sure the vet is watching him carefully for signs (fever especially). Bleach your walls, you floors and anything he has come in contact with. Wash any bedding on a hot cycle with bleach. Bleach is the only tning that kills it. The virus can live in your soil for up to 10 years, and is often rampant after a rain (the water brings it to the surface). People can bring it in on their hands, clothes and shoes. Limit who comes in your home, and make sure they wash their hands, buy some odo-ban (or similar) from your vet and make them spray themselves before coming in, and leave their shoes outside the door. If you have other pets, make sure they are vaccinated. |

ohh nooo so sorry you are both going thru this..pray he will be alright...hes in the best place to be.. :( |
so sorry you going thru this but a good breeder would never let an 8 week puppy go, now on to the parvo, he is in good hands now, and being treated, lots of dogs get parvo and get better, it takes time to recover fully from Parvo, mix a gallon of water to 1/4 cup of bleach and clean everything, bleach KILLS the parvo virus. wipe doors specially door knobs, mop floors, and outside walkways too, Parvo can live in the outside walkways, wash shoes, i mean EVERYTHING. discard his bedding, is really hard to kill the virus in the lining of bedding. if he has a crate bleach it in the tub, and rinse it well. sending prayers for him to make it thru this hard time.. hugs, |
Poor baby :( Please keep us posted on how he is doing. Praying for him  |
Poor little furbaby. So young, and what a beautiful little face. Glad you got him to the vet and that he's getting treated. Prayers for healing for you little furbaby. |
So sorry you are going through this. Sending prayers that your lil baby will respond to treatment and will be on the road to recovery. Please keep us updated when you can. |

As for the house, we have been spraying and cleaning and washing everything he has been on and around. When we found out how contagious the virus was we were and still are very concerned for our Pug who is 7 years old. The vet told us she was up to date on her vacc.s so we shouldn't have to worry too much just keep an eye out. We called the people we bought the dog from last night! The vet told us this was a good idea to warn her that the mother and puppies might have this as well. She seemed very shocked and worried but just because they weren't sick at the moment it wasn't her dogs that he got it from.. I guess she didn't understand that the dogs could still be carriers? I hope the best for her other pups.. She said we could return him...HECK NO! He is our baby now and always will be, in sick and in health. |
