Grrrr..blood after poopin again (graphic) Hi, When I picked up Bella's doodee tonight there was a drop of blood (very tiny) mixed with mucus. She had the same problem for the first three days after we brought her home. I have her shot records right in front of me and she's UTD (last one tomorrow). When we took her to the vet the first time around he said she was a very healthy little puppy, just tiny. I asked about the blood spot I saw, and he said that they are emotional creatures, and that it was probably just nerves from the home switching and the car ride home, etc. But, he did put a blue 'thing' in her rectum and checked for worms and/or eggs. She was clean. She hasn't had any blood-tainted spots after she poopees ever since (about 3 weeks now we've had her)...until tonight. It looked the same as it had that day we took her in. Once again, I called the vet alarmed (as I think any puppy parent would be). Questions I was asked: Is she lethargic? -- No Is she eating? -- Yes, like a piggy as usual. Is she getting fresh water? -- of course Is she playful? - Yes Is she acting differently than normal? -- No Is she vomiting? -- No After explaining that we did have a foster pup in our house (who is also UTD on shots and dewormed), I was told she was probably just going through a reaction to having a new plaything in the house, and to watch her BMs for a couple of days. If it continues or gets worse, bring her in. I'm skeptical of this answer I keep getting. Well, tonight, after playing like a fiend for most of the afternoon (stopping for drinks and treats and food)...I picked her up to give her kissies and noticed her nose was wetter than normal, so I took her under a light and looked at it. It looks fine..but looks watery...and while she was under the light she sneezed. Her eyes are clear and they're not running...she's not acting weird (apart from looking at me like I'm crazy). Do I get a second opinion from another vet, or do I do what my vet said and "watch her" I don't believe a puppy is supposed to get a blood-tainted drop after poopin' just because something 'new' is in the house...that doesn't make sense to me. There is a 24 hour emergency vet clinic (somewhat) close to us...should I take her there or am I flipping pancakes before I pour the batter? |
I'd drop the vet. Sorry but I would. |
Trust your instinct...go to another vet! Good luck! |
Find a new vet, yours sounds like he could careless. |
I've always trusted him in the past, but I'm not so sure he's right in this...it simply doesn't make sense to me. I've never heard of a dog or puppy passing any sort of blood (no matter how minute or small the amount) without there being something wrong....certainly not from a change in their environment. Thanks for the advice, it wouldn't hurt to take her to different vet for a second opinion, we'll do that. |
good luck finding out what's wrong with your pup. |
Yorkies are prone to a type of stress intestinal upset, and as with many intestinal issues, a very small amount of blood (strand-like) may show up in the stool as a result. It has something to do with the lining of the intestines being shed. It should clear up in a day or two. If it continues or the amount of blood increases, antibiotics may be necessary to prevent a secondary infection in the intestines. From your prior posts... I think your vet is great. Keep him... |

I would definitely schedule and appointment if it continues .. but it does not sound like an emergency. ... if the amount of blood increases, yes, I would be alarmed. |
I know from experience that it is actually very common for dogs to get stressed from boarding , grooming, or other new situations and have blood in their stool. IT can happen after only 1/2 hr or less of stress. We actually have an aggressive small breed dog, who gets so stressed from coming to the vet, that within 5 minutes of being there, when we go to do his toe nails or vaccines, etc, he poops all over and it already has blood in it. And he never has blood in his stool at home. Obviously there can be many other serious reasons for blood in stool. But from the sounds of it your little girl has had it after being in a new situation/ playing with another dog. So it can definitely be from too much excitement/stress. |
Have you changed food or given diff treats ? as it does sound like colitis. |
Hi again, We're keeping a close eye on her, but thus far she's acting no different than she usually does. Her stool is well formed and normal looking, it's just that after she pooped there was a small circle (drop) of mucus with 'strands' of blood. And, as I mentioned above, when I brought her under the light to look at her wet nose, she sneezed under the light (hasn't done it since). No, we haven't given her anything new...no new treats (same treats)..and no new food. She's eating again at the moment, tossing her food in the air and then sitting on my husband's foot to eat it (like she always does). Thank you for the information about stress-induced intestinal bleeding; I had no idea. I don't know what she would be stressed about though, she's had nothing but fun since this dog walked in the door (she's getting plenty of sleep too though). I might let myself breathe now. My husband and I will take turns checking on her throughout the night and if anything (I don't care if it's a small thing) changes..she's going to the ER vet. |
My Sparky has colitis & he would go through that every few months & then we switched food & treats & he hasn't done it since. |

I agree get a 2nd vet opinion. Always trust your instincts |
Hi, Bella is bright-eyed and bushy tailed this morning, and did fine (normal) throughout the night. She has poopied three times since that drop was found, and none of them after that have had the blood drop. However, since the responses are somewhat mixed in suggestions, and since I really don't know many people here yet, we've decided to follow both suggestions.:D Bella is going in today for the last in her series of shots. During that time I'm going to be pretty adamant about these blood drops that have happened, and that they do something to test for any *possible* reasons. I do trust my vet. He's been our vet for a number of years now and has never steered us in the wrong direction. I am going to ask for every test under the sun to rule out any GI tract problems, and I want another Parvo test done and I have decided I want her to have a titer test for that too. Am I going overboard? Yes, probably...but I'd rather go overboard than have to bury my puppy because we did nothing. That being said, we've also made an appointment with another veterinary clinic on the other end of town. The appt is this coming Monday; I'll get another opinion and exam for her from there as well. Hubby thinks I'm going overboard...but we have petpurses for a reason; to use them. Thanks for the advice; we're applying all of it. |
