Bad trip to the ER, help!!! So yesterday morning we woke up to find Mack on an area rug next to a pile of vomit. He was shaking and smelled like that yeasty smell he gets in his ears with an ear infection. He was also bobbing his head. We quickly got in the car and rushed him to the ER. They kept him in an "observation area" for close to two hours until I demanded they let me wait with him for the vet in a room. He was traumatized enough because he was sick and then they took him away from me. Once we got him back he seamed lethargic but ok. He was still bobbing his head. The vet gave him some subcutaneous fluids and Pepcid. Se said it was a gastroenteritis. We got home and he slept the rest of the day. He got up around 7pm and ate a little. He started to look a little better. He slept through the night in my bed and woke up this morning acting fine. He even went outside to chase some ducks which is one of his favorite past times. Then about 1pm he started to bob his head again, shake, omit this awful odor and now has been sleeping all afternoon. I called my own vet and they can't get him in until tomorrow. I am freaking out. Could it be liver shunts? Diabetes? An allergic reaction to the glucosimine we put in his homemade dog food (which is the only change recently)? Hsanyone ever had any experience with anything like this? I am so worried! |
Did you tell your own vet it is an emergency? I would call them back right away, and ask to speak with your vet if they tell you to wait again. Stay on hold, don't wait for him to call you back. If they won't see him, take him to another ER Vet. |
I think back to the ER. At minimum call them, explain you were in there 36hrs ago, and these are his symptoms. And watch out for duck poo - you don't want your dog nibbling on that! |
Well Kathy great minds! Have a wonderful New Year. Need to go teach class soon. |

I did call the ER back. They want me to bing him back in. However, because I felt that yesterday they were inept, I don't want to waste time and money. I also live on an island. It is not a close ride to the ER nor is it easy to get there. I know I have to get him to the vet, however there are certain things I can't control.....I was just looking for some experiences and perhaps a little support. Not to be judged for not getting him to the doc right away! |
His head bobbing would make me nervous... something neurological may be going on, or he could have a very severe ear infection, or toxicity from the duck poo (if he ingested any). If my dog had those symptoms, he'd be going back to the ER vet, if my regular vet was not available. Maybe a different vet will be on duty tonight? I am not judging you... just the symptoms your dog is showing... they may be life threatening. |

I'm sorry Mack isn't doing well. Sending prayers the vet will find out what is going on and give some relief to the little guy. Hugs))) |
