I made my baby sick :( I feel absolutely terrible. Last night I went to Taco Bell and decided to treat JoJo with a plain chicken & rice burrito (without the wrap), thinking it wouldn't be too bad. I was wrong. He woke up around 7:30 this morning vomiting. At first it was the food that came out, then he continued vomiting bile. By 10am he had thrown up 9 times. He was shaky, lethargic and very weak. I was so upset, especially because I just lost my job last week and the last thing I needed was an emergency expense, but I knew I had no choice...I would spend every last dime on him if need be. Right before taking him to the emergency clinic, he threw up again and had a very runny stool. Thankfully, bloodwork was done and pancreatitis was ruled out among a couple other things (it's on his discharge paperwork, but I can't remember off the top of my head). They gave him 2 shots, one for nausea and the other for diarrhea. No food or water for 6 hours, and then a bland diet for a few days. They said his gums were pink and he was not severely dehydrated. Right now he is asleep next to me and is still very lethargic...I'm a huge worrywart so I keep touching him to make sure he's still breathing! I still feel so terrible. I have learned my lesson, and I wanted to put this on here for others who may make the same mistake thinking what I thought: that we feel guilty for eating "yummy" food in front of them and think we can occasionally "spoil" them with it. If you love your dog, please don't give them human food, especially fast food...no matter how "healthy" you think it may be! They are so fragile and any little thing could be harmful to them. I'm praying he recovers fully soon and returns to his normal, playful loving self. Please keep him in your thoughts. Thank you. |
Oh, poor baby. I am glad that you did take him in. It could have really ended up differently if you had not. I learned this lesson the hard way too. My DH would give Rosie human food. After a visit to the vet with the same symptoms human food is outlawed here as well. You did the right thing and I am sure in a day or two he will be back to normal. Thank you for posting this and reminding everyone not to give the human food. Especially with the holidays coming. Sending prayers for a speedy recovery. |
Oh n o I'm so sorry he is feeling bad. Maybe it was the spices they cook the meat in that did that to him. Prayers he is feeling better soon. |
Poor little guy. I'm glad you took him in and it's not more serious and that he's going to be ok. I just went to the Taco Bell website, the grilled chicken burrito has 18 grams of fat in it! Whodda thunk? Thanks for the reminder about being careful feeding people food to our babies, especially with the Holidays coming up. |
Thanks for the reminder, I bet there are a bunch of us who will be very careful now. Sorry he is still feeling sick....rest is probably a good thing for him right now. |
Duh! No tacos for you! Poor jojo. |
Zhoie will be 3 in Jan and at first, it was so hard for me to not give her any human food. My vet said I only ask one thing from you on her first check up..."please DO NOT give her any human food" if you love your dog, don't do it. He said, dogs don't think of food the way we do, for comfort, etc...only if we give it to them, do they even know what it is. I'm here to say, it is true. Zhoie doesn't get any people food and doesn't even act like she knows what it is. When we sit and eat, she doesn't even acknowledge us, so no begging from her is wonderful plus ;) Be strong...sending prayers for your sweet little one. |

I hope JoJo is on the mend and feels much better soon. |
When Mina got sick I fed her in tiny amount, boiled chic mixed with rice that had been cooked in chic broth (after I scraped the fat off of the top). I actually keep this in my freezer because I have a 15yr old dog that will refuse to eat sometimes and a poodle that has a very sensitive tummy. My vet oked this instead of the canned stuff, but ask your vet first. |
Oh, I forgot to thank you for the reminder too! THANK YOU! |
Finally a post that has an emergency and did the right thing! So happy your little man is feeling better. We take Gizmo alot of places and if we go through the drive thru (usually Subway) I know it hard not to look at that face and want to give them a piece. That's why I usually have a doogy treat on hand!:) |
Wait, you're from Shelby Township? I grew up there! Go figure! Now I'm in Macomb. |
Thank you all so much for the replies and well wishes for JoJo. He just woke up from his nap but still looks weak. I tried encouraging him to have water, but he is not interested and just wants to lay down. Poor baby. I am currently boiling some plain chicken and rice for him as the vet said to feed that to him (2 tablespoons every 3-4 hrs), along with 1/4 cup water at a time until his tummy gets back on track again. Again, thank you all for keeping him in your thoughts. |

Actually no longer in Shelby Twp, now I'm in Sterling Heights. I took him to the Animal Emergency Hospital on Gratiot near M59, they were really nice there and I liked how they empathize with big babies who worry a lot like me! Nice to meet you neighbor. :) |
That's where we took Gizmo. They were really awesome. We had a tall guy that was wearing a MSU like cap thing as our vet. Loved how well they took acre of Giz, my husband couldn't stand the two cats that were running around. I'm a loser for being happy that I'm so close to an ER vet:rolleyes: |
