Yorkie with Broken Leg Hi, this is my first post, I have a Yorkie that broke her leg Monday, she broke the top bone on the left front leg in half at a 45 degree angle. she had surgery Tuesday, there are no bandages or cast on her just the staples. Keeping her resting but when she goes to move that leg it's almost like she doesn't have much control over it, it turns out at the elbow when she puts it down. She can hold it up bent so it doesn't touch the ground but other then that it's like it flops around. The Vet re-xrayed her and said the pin and wires look fine and nothing wrong with the joint. I'm very concerned, doesn't look normal. Does anyone have experience or know anything about this type of injury? Thanks. |
Is the Vet. an orthopedic surgeon? If not, maybe a visit to one is in order if you think there is a problem with her leg, especially before it's completely healed. Also welcome to YT. :D What's your baby's name? |
Oh dear I am so sorry to read your post. Please get your baby to an orthopaedic vet soon. Praying for her to make a quick recovery and get back to her normal self. P.S. My Romeo had a hairline fracture on his right back leg (small toe) and he was in a splint/cast for two weeks. When that was over it took about another six weeks before he was able to feel comfortable again on that paw. |
Dear Yorkiedaze, Your Babies are precious!! Yes the Vet is an Orthopedic Surgeon, I'm just concerned with the way the leg turns out. We will probably take her back again just to make sure. Her name is Zsa Zsa Chanel, will post pic soon. This site looks complicated this is my first one, looks like I have a lot to get familiar with. |
Sorry to hear that, as I am now an expert with broken front legs. My guy Basil broke each front leg, between the wrist and elbow. He needed a Plate and screws, and was in a splint for 6 weeks, and then no running or jumping for another 6 weeks. The one he broke back in March healed perfectly, and the one he broke in Sept is now out of the splint, and healing great. No limping, no pain. I guess the bone your dog broke is thicker, but still surprised no splint or cast. As far as the turning, I have no ida, but wish you guys the best. |
Check with Steve user name shodanusmc his Yorkies had broken legs.He will be wonderful for info. |

For the OP, the best Surgeon in the Chicago area for small dog breaks is Dr. Averill at Bluepearl in Northbrook, Il. |

The hardest part of a leg break is the recovery time. It is almost impossible to keep the quiet, not jumping, and trying to run. No doubt your pup will be 100% in now time at all! |
I have never heard of wire wrapped around a fracture, but if this is an orthopedic surgeon, I am sure it is ok. As for wraps and splints...I have honestly never had any of my pups wrapped or splinted after ortho surgery where plates and screws are put it....but they were all hind legs. One of our other foster homes had a front leg in a wrap for a couple of weeks after surgery....that was on the lower part of the leg. Maybe that is the difference. I would definitely go back to the vet if you have any questions. Good luck with her recovery...please continue to update us! |

My Tibbs too broke his leg and it sucked ...He did act wired with his leg to. The first few weeks his leg would quiver and shake and go crazy .... but after he got use to it he stopped. Until after he got the splint off lol then crazy again for 2 weeks....its all about getting use to it he is fine now . We spent 6 weeks in a splint and crate :( Its harder on you than in is on them lots of loves and holding but don't let you little love guilt you into letting them run wild it will cost you lots more money and time. Good luck! |
So sorry hope your little one gets well soon |
Thanks for Everyones Concerns Thanks for everyone's concerns and advice.:) I took her back to the vet this morning and we discovered in the new x-ray that the pin bent a little, so now she is in a splint. I'm way more comfortable now that the leg is supported, she's not as comfortable but she'll get used to it. At least now the bone is supported and I don't have to freak out as much with every little move she makes. Still needs bed rest but can stand a little better on her own now to potty and eat and drink. :thumbs up |

It is very important that xrays be done to be sure that the bone is mending. I am telling you this because I had a foster who came to me 6 months after fracturing his leg. (the femur in his hind leg). The vet only put a pin in and it did not mend. He ended up needing bone grafting and a plate and screws. The ortho surgeon told me that an IM pin rarely works on a long bone in the leg. I don't know if that is what your pup has....just letting you know of something I experienced. Again, I would recommend a second opinion from a board certified surgeon if that is not who you used. American College of Veterinary Surgeons |
Tina broke her back leg when she was six weeks old in two places. She wore a cast for 6wks. and then they wanted to give it another couple of weeks. She was checked weekly and did fine. She is now 14 and has never even had any arthritus in it. Hope your baby does well. I have never heard of one not in a splint or cast. That would concern me too the way you said it laid. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to check with another vet. Good luck, I know its hard to keep them quite and still. |
Update on Zsa Zsa and Thanks to Everyone for their Concerns Been a crazy week, went back to the Vet again on Wednesday as the wrapping around her chest from the splint started to pulling her right shoulder and we had to cut it, went to the Vet to get rewrapped and he didn't think it looked right so he re-x-rayed, THE PIN BROKE! So we are back to square one. She had surgery again today, 2 Surgeons worked on her this time and they put what they call a "Halo" on her leg. 5 pins going through her humerus onto this rod that sits on the outside of the leg. Vet said she is doing well, we can't see her until Monday and I miss her dearly. |
OMg I am so sorry you little one is going through this and 2 surgeries at that. sending hugs and well wishes for a smooth recovery |
I'm so sorry you and your little one are going through this! I hope and pray that this second surgery does the trick and she will be healed and recovered soon! |

Update on Zsa Zsa's Broken Leg Sorry all, have been so busy haven't been on Yorkie Talk in awhile. It will be 3 weeks since Zsa Zsa's second surgery. She has been in the hospital since then as the Vets didn't want to take any chances of this operation having any problems. We went to see her a couple of times but we had to stop because they would have to give her muscle relaxers before we went and then some after we left because she would throw a temper tantrum since she couldn't go home with us. We and the Vet thought it best, even though it is so hard, to not visit, but I call every morning and every evening and the Vet calls on Sat and Sun every weekend for updates. She is healing great, still has a long road ahead of her but the bone seems to be doing what it is supposed to be doing. I'm very anxious to see the X-Rays and her progression and her, possibly if everything still healing correctly, on Monday but very nervous at the same time as I don't want her do anything in my care that could cause her to reinjure herself. Thanks for everyone's prayers they definitely seem to have worked.:aimeeyork |
Update on Zsa Zsa, Coming Home Soon! She's still at the hospital but the halo may be coming off Monday. The Vet says she's 85% healed and I have to be careful of her not jumping or running. How am I going to do that?? I am a nervous wreck! I'm so afraid because she can't go through a 3rd ordeal, and her leg can't. Everyone talks about plates and screws, I'm nervous because he was against that in the beginning, did the pin, that didn't work, now have the halo. Can't do a splint because I believe the splint is what caused the pin to break after the first operation. Somehow the wrapping on her torso moved (I guess from us picking her up and holding her) and was pulling to where she was crying so we had to cut it, after that is when he discovered the broken pin. I am just praying that we've gone the right route, doubting everything lately. I mean when this halo comes off of her she is not going to have anything on that leg! He says he can't cast without going all around her body like the splint, I'm confused, I've seen dogs with casts on one leg like a person. Has anyone else heard of this? Thanks again for everyone's concerns and well wishes/prayers!:aimeeyork:santa: |
omg so sorry this turn worse everytime i read one of ur newer posts. i dont have any experience with this. sending love and positive thoughts for a full none running and jumping recovery your way. |
