I don't know what else to do...
 

Earlier this month, my fiancé and future in-laws got me my first yorkie as abirthday gift!! She is AKC Certified and absolutely beautiful! It was love atfirst sight. I have never been so inlove with an animal in my life. Mymother actually met my puppy before I did and named her “Bella” because of mylove in Twilight. LOL She immediatelybecame a part of our family.

My future mother-in-law picked up this precious puppy from the breeder onThursday, September 1st, when she was almost 7 weeks old. I got her Friday. Pursuant to the agreement with the breeder,we took her to the vet, just to verify her health on Tuesday, September 6th. After our weekend with her we planned ontaking her to a vet anyway because she did not have energy and did not want toeat. At this appointment we learned thatBella has hypoglycemia. She only weighed14 ounces, she was the runt of her liter. She was very sick, they kept her all day and gave her IV’s. She was sent home with numerousprescriptions, including Nutri-Cal and a prescription dog food. Bella hated this dog food!!! We had to forcefeed her every four hours!! It broke my heart.

We had to take her back later the same week because she was still refusingto eat (other than our force feeding) She was dehydrated again and they kepther all day for IV’s.

The following week we took her to a different vet (the vet my mom and dadhave always used) because she was still not wanting to eat and she was havingtrouble walking each morning when she woke. This vet told us that she was “a stubborn ass” We have tried so manydifferent types of dog food in the hopes that she will eat!! Now she is eating stage 1 baby food (chickenand chicken broth) She was eating thispretty good toward the end of the week this past week.

Then on Sunday (yesterday) I jumped in the shower as soon as I woke up(Bella was barking in her crate) Before I could get out of the shower, my 10year old daughter had brought Bella into our bedroom. (My fiancé tore ligaments in his foot thispast week and can not walk without crutches at the moment) He yelled at me to hurry and get someNutri-Cal… in the 10-15 minutes I was in the shower, Bella had wentunconscious. I went took her to a local Animal Hospitalimmediately.

When I arrived at the hospital they immediately took her back and beganworking on her. I was then informed thatshe needed hospitalization and it would cost $500-1,000 (all of which was dueimmediately, no payments allowed) and there was a large probability shewouldn’t make it through the day. Thedoctor told me I had a couple of choices. I could have her put to sleep or I could take her home and care for her,but to be prepared that she have a grave outlook.

So I brought her home. I have criedover her for the past two days. She appearsto be doing better, but I am scared to get my hopes up. She doesn’t want to eat. I am putting baby food chicken and chickenbroth in a syringe and force feeding her, along with some honey and Nutri-Cal…



Anyone have any ideas for anything else I may be able to try to feed her???Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What was the last vet's diagnosis? Were any blood tests run?

I would be concerned something is really wrong w this pup, and I would not be happy w the "glibness" of the vets she has been to. This pup is very young to have been placed w a family. Most reputable breeders do not believe in placing before 12 weeks of age due to the small size of this breed. I would be afraid this dog was not weaned and ready for eating on its own being taken from its mother at 7 weeks of age. (I'm not blaming you for this. You are not the breeder who should know this.) It sounds like you love this little one dearly and are trying everything you can to help her.

You might also want to post this question in the breeder's talk section. They are experienced in puppies and might be able to give you advice in how to nurse this precious little one to help it survive this.

I would find a better vet in your area. Hopefully someone from your area might see this and know of a more caring vet to help you. Also, a regular vet you have a relationship w will help you cost-wise and not be as expensive as an emergency vet, although at the time it sounds like you did the right thing taking her to one.

oh gosh, I'm so sorry! This is so sad! I understand the financial part! I don't know for sure but I think because of the bacteria in honey, you are never to feed it to babies or puppies because it takes alot of their immune system to ward off that bacteria!

second, have you tried royal canin yorkie puppy food. It is loaded with things the babies need at first. I'm told by alot of ppl that if you have a baby who won't eat, they most always will eat this.

I had a friend who had a tiny yorkie and she was instructed to give her baby Karo syrup in her water. Make sure above all that your puppy gets lots of water.

Where are you located in TN? I'm in greeneville, tn.

I agree about the puppy being placed in a new home too fast. My Chloe was very healthy and I didn't get to bring her home until 12 weeks. Not to be ugly but sounds like the breeder may have gotten rid of her quickly because they knew something was up.

Can you recommend a better vet for her that might be able to be more helpful?

Oh you poor dear! You have really been thrown into the fire. Doesn't sound like the best vets specially in the compassion compartment. Aren't they supposed to love animals more than money?? I understand this is their business but really??:mad:
The pup might need that "milk" they give to orphaned pups to keep her going.

Please read the "stickys" at the beginning of the "breeder talk" forum. Lots of good nutrition rich puppy food.

Not sure if that is the answer. But some puppy milk replacer may give her some food she is really needing. And you could syringe it to her so she is getting some nutrient. It gives directions on how much to feed on the can or box

Sure hope someone can give you some good advice. I would be looking for a different vet also.

Get some Royal Canin Mini Baby Dog food. I got my puppy very young and it was highly recommended by my vet for newly weaned puppies.

I pray this pup rallies and regains strength. In addition to food, be mindful of not stressing out your pup. Don't over-handle her which can contribute to hypoglycemia. Make sure she has lots of rest.

you are doing all you can do she was way too small for you to be bringing her home. Sometimes pups that small have hypoglycemia because they are so small and sometimes its because there is an underlying problem like liver shunt. I think once she gets some weight to her and is stable you should have her tested for liver shunt. My Jewels was real tiny like that when I brought her home and I got gerber meat sticks and cut them up for her and she wouid eat them. I also think some milk replacer would be good. I do not know much about supplemental milk and things but I would think that it wouldn't hurt to have some on hand to give to her. It sounds as though you are doing what you can for her. I would definitely be looking for a vet who is more versed with smaller dogs.

Can you cook up some chicken and feed this to her along with the brother over mashed kibble? This might help with getting her to get used to different foods. Be careful with baby foods. You want to avoid the ones with onion powder in them as onions can be harmful.

Gizmo was very young when we brought him home. Some things that worked for us was soft pet food, his kibble in the food processor with chicken and some of the water that the chicken had been cooking in, and I also put a little cottage cheese and plain yogurt and basically threw it in the food processor. Try making the food warm, it may be a little more comforting.

I also agree with Hot Rod's Mom, you may want to talk tot he vet about getting some milk replacement. This little girl was way too young to come home, and right now you need to be her replacement momma.

I have bought everything I can think of to feed her, including milkreplacement. I have given her the A/D prescription food, Pedigree puppy chow(soft) and I have heated everything up in the microwave for a few seconds towarm it up. I have made chicken andgiven that to her, she still doesn’t want it. Although she did have a bit moreinterest than anything else.

For anyone who lives in this area, I took her to Butler Animal Clinic lastweek, they are the best around, according to just about everyone. They are theones who told me her main problem was her refusal to eat. The vet we took herto first tested her for just about everything, everything was negative exceptthe hypoglycemia. They did give me aprescription for amoxicillin for a rash on her belly (I saw on here thatsomeone else was having that problem with their baby…)

She seems to be feeling a bit better, although she is sleeping, a lot! The animal hospital said I needed to hold hera lot because her body temp was so low, it was the best way to keep her warm. So I have tried alternating holding her andlaying her in a clothes basket with a couple towels. Of course at night and when I have to leavefor a bit, I put her in her crate with some towels so she doesn’t get introuble around the house. J

They told me I should be feeding her 6-8 times per day, and I have been,even setting an alarm to wake up during the night to feed her and give herNutri-Cal.

Another thing that my work is a little bit of ground cooked beef, no seasoning.
