Yorkie swaying.... I have a 6 month old yorkie...she threw up twice today after eating a puperoni stick...then I noticed she seemed like off balance...i noticed her swaying a bit like she was about to fall over. I'm very nervous and I'm not sure what to do about it... |
I would take her to the vet for evaluation. Please let us know how things go. Wishing you well. |
Thank you - I did take her to an emergency hospital by my house...they gave her fluids and they recommended pretty much every test under the sun...unfortunately I could not afford to pay for their quote...I have taken her home, she hasnt vomited since but I still notice that she sways, but she has been acting a little more like herself...I'm hoping that she was just dehydrated...I'm just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and what it could possibly be? I'm monitoring her closely, if she doesn't get back to herself soon I will just have to bring her back & figure a way to pay the bill... |
Yorkies are susceptable to congenital problems that can start with the symptoms you mentioned. That is why the vet recommended those tests, probably. Did the vet explain why they wanted to run the tests to you? Liver shunt is prevalent in yorkies. There are other possibilities. If the swaying gets worse or if she exhibits other neurological symptoms, I would take her back to the vet immediately. If she becomes more lethargic, again back to vet. If she worsens in any way, I would go back to ER vet. Otherwise, I would definitely go to my regular vet in the am and have them look at her. You can get care credit lines to pay for vet bills. I think they are available through vet practices. Hope your little one feels better. |
^^I agree with Gidget. Could be neuro, liver shunt, or maybe even pancreatitis. Only further testing and evaluation will tell. Ditch the Pupperoni. It is very high in fat. Yorkies are prone to pancreatitis and something like Pupperoni could easily set it off. Monitor your pup's gums. If they are pale and sticky, she is in serious danger. If these are neuro symptoms she is having, the sooner she receives treatment, the better. |

Well I have been monitoring her and she seems to be a lot better...She has not been swaying much now after receiving the fluids and she is playing with her toys and walking around now, closer to herself. She wasnt eating before and now she just ate a container of wet food (Nutro Natural Choice) and she has ate a few pieces of crushed ice...I'm hoping it was just a simple case of mild dehydration and not something more serious (it was hot & humid today and we did not have the ac on - she is also a picky eater and did not eat much of her food this morning). The vet just said that the tests were supposed to rule out that she ingested something poisonous or an obstruction. I am going to call her regular vet in the am even if shes better to get his opinion (they would be a lot cheaper if he recommends the same tests). |
OK, so last night she appeared to be much better and she slept through the night. This morning I wake up to hear her coughing and she threw up yellow bile, but she has not started to sway. Her vet opens in about 2 hours so I will try to wait it out till then...if she throws up again or starts swaying I'll bring her back to the emergency vet by my house :( |
Praying for you and your baby that she will feel better this morning and the vet can take care of her. |
Just checking to see how you made out at your vet. I am so sorry your little one is sick. Hoping you get some answers this am and your vet can start the appropriate treatment to help her. |
How sad. I do hope this yorkie has been seen by the vet and appropriate tests been done. |
all last night she was fine, but this morning she vomited again - yellow bile with some rice pieces...my vet just opened so I'm going to call them, but she has been acting fine so far, not weak or swaying & she ate a container of wet food and drank water (ate an ice cube)...she peed and made a small bowel movement - no blood or discoloration though...thank you all for your well wishes & prayers...ill let you know what the vet says after I call her... |
If she has never had any basic lab work done, I would ask the vet about doing them. You need to have a baseline on her. It may cost a few dollars, but it may also be the best money you have ever invested. It certainly will not be as much at your regular vet and better to do them today rather than take a chance of her needing them at night when it will cost double. |
sending well wishes and prayers for your sweet roxy. |
