When to consider euthanasia
 
Baby Chan is slipping away. She is weak and frail. Suffering. BAT result was over 300. She's being force fed, on all sorts of meds and having diarrhea. Her medical bills are looking to be thousands and thousands of dollars. I'm completely in shock. She went down so fast. The vet will not even do the surgery until Baby Chan gets better and she doesn't know if she can get better. I have to consider the worst here. I'm also looking for any type of organizations who may be able to help. I will surrender Baby Chan if she has a better chance at living. I can't think straight and I'm looking for advice from anyone. This IS THE WORST thing I have ever had to think of. Deciding whether we fight and go all the way with this, or let her go peacefully.

I think euthanasia is the best option when an animal no longer has any decent quality of life. I am very sorry you are dealing with facing this decision.

I agree with Armani. Unfortunately, only the pet owner knows when that time comes. What does the vet say about her prognosis?

I posted on your other thread already, but I'd say this. There is no right or wrong answer right now. Fighting for her life while it is still possible for her to get better is not wrong, but ending her suffering and even taking financial status into consideration is not wrong either. This is something only you can decide.

She is at a veterinary hospital and isn't in extreme pain. It is perfectly acceptable to keep trying. It doesn't sound like she is with a specialist. If not, she needs to be. Feeding the wrong foods will make her symptoms worse.

I can only say what I would do. If money didn't come into the conversation, I would be at a vet school with her for assessment. If it still looks this way in a few days after the proper diet is tried, etc., then I'd think about making a decision. But this is your pup and you know her best. You are also the only person who knows your financial state and how far you think you should go.

I would recommend Care Credit.

It's so hard. We are all in turmoil. I want to believe she can get better but even if she does can she make it through the surgery and will she be normal after since her brain has been infected with all these chemicals. I don't know what to do.

I am a fighter. I'd take my dog to the nearest large veterinary school on an emergency basis. They can either stabilize her fast or put her down there. I see this as her only option given the gravity of her situation.
You are in my thoughts.

Neurological symptoms that accompany liver disease are called hepatic encephalopathy. Toxins (from food and such) don't get processed properly and set off the brain. Remove the toxin and/or fix the liver and you remove the brain issue. Even dogs with severe neuro symptoms from liver disease can stop having them if things are able to be treated. The biggest issue is that if it is a shunt that needs to be repaired, is she stable enough for surgery. My goal would be getting her stable. If she has surgery, she'll still never be a "normal" dog, but the success rate is really very good.

Linda (LadyJane) will be home in 30 minutes. She can possibly help you to find a resource if you want to surrender Baby Chan to the care of a reputable rescue. At least discuss this with her before putting down Baby Chan, unless of course Baby Chan is suffering.

My heart hurts so much for you. I lived through this with my sweet Bunkey last March. He became so sick so fast. You will know what to do,it will come to you. I wish you peace in whatever decision you make.

[SIZE=3]I can only answer from my experience, when I had done everything I could medically and knew in my heart that there was nothing else to do, and I knew my babies were suffering I have made that call several times. It hurt's like hell to do it, but I knew in my heart it was the best for my babies. Only you can make that choice and look deep into your heart for the answer. I am so sorry you are dealing this. YOu will certainly be in my prayers.

This is a huge sacrifice that you are making for the good of your little pupster and I SO admire you for what you are doing. You are putting Baby Chan and her welfare at the top of your priority list. You are a good person and she is lucky to have been loved by you!

I posted on the other thread and just found this thread. I am so glad Ladyjane was able to find some help and so glad you, OP, are taking such good care of Baby Chan. She is so lucky to have had someone like you to look out for her in her time of need. We will be holding Baby Chan and you in our prayers.
