Daisy is sick I took Daisy for routine blood work on Monday. My vet called me on Thursday with bad news - Daisy's liver enzymes all were signficantly elevated and she had very abnormal bile acids test results (98 pre and 58 post). Her blood was also very lipemic (fatty) and she had crystals in her urine. I could not talk when my vet called and asked if I could call her the following morning. Between her phone call to me and the next morning, Daisy had several bouts of diarrhea but she was eating and drinking and otherwise seemed ok. I spoke to my vet friday morning to tell her I was concerned about the diarrhea and the liver. My vet wanted to see her, so I left work and took her in. Thank goodness I did because by the time we got there, Daisy was panting in distress and painful on examination. She had three bouts of bloody diarrhea at the vet. My vet did an ultrasound on the spot and saw that Daisy had spongy material in her stomach, and asked me if Daisy ate a pillow. I didn't think so, and said maybe it was food. She wanted to keep Daisy for a few hours to give her Pepcid by injection and some fluids to see if the food moved and to manage her pain if needed. I left her and came back three hours later. Daisy was still painful, and had more bloody diarrhea. Then she threw up, and it was all food. So my vet ran her back again to do another ultrasound but the spongy material was still there. We said we'll keep her home with medicines until morning with strict instructions to immediately go to the ER if we had any additional blood or pain that wasnt responding. Well I took her back this morning and they did another ultrasound and an xray and thankfully the spongy material was gone -- but she is full of gas! She is still not quite right but she's improving. Daisy has so many problems that she can't be on food like i/D or other things that would normally be given in these circumstances. Daisy is improving but it was very scary. I am going to be trying a new food for her, but right now she is in her glory with Dr orders to eat only scrambled egg in chicken broth. She's hiding in her canopy bed and feels miserable. I just wanted to post this here because gas and diarrhea are nothing to ignore EVER. Daisy was in great distress and in pain. She needed help and fast. She lost 1/2 lb in 2 days but never dehydrated. I am grateful for my wonderful vets and their state of the art equipment to assess her on the spot. Daisy is a miracle dog, I don't know how she pulls through every single time. She has a bum liver loaded up with medications right now and she is tired, but she will come through, I'll make sure of it. |
I'm very sorry Cathy. I appreciate you posting this. Whenever you google vomiting or diarrhea, the first thing they state is that this is a common occurrence and that it's not particularly worrisome because dogs vomit and have diarrhea all the time...it really should never be taken lightly. Hugs for Daisy (and you). |
Poor little :daisy: That Girl has had more than her fair share of trials and tribulations :( Thank God she had the great fortune of falling into a family with a super Mommy and Daddy  Give :daisy: hugs from me and Sugar Baby  |
Daisy pulls through because she has a great mom taking care of her. :) I agree, gas and diarrhea should never be ignored. Very painful and dangerous. Sending prayers that Daisy will feel better soon. |

I am so sorry to hear that Daisy was not feeling well. Glad to hear that you got answer and quickly. Our prayers are with your entire family while she recovers. She is very lucky to be part of such a loving family. |
I am so sorry to hear that Daisy is ill, but I'm relieved that she is responding to treatment. It is so heartbreaking when our little ones are sick and in pain. My little girl was treated for gas pockets in her abdomen and IBD. I know Daisy probably needs rest now, but when she is able to, I always found Ashley's walks helped her gas pockets a great deal. You take such great care of your little ones, and you have armed yourself with great knowledge and outstanding medical care. It sounds like your vet is wonderful. I always had great faith in my vet also, and he really helped Ashley have a good quality of life for almost seventeen years. I believe in being proactive, just as you are, and it helped ease some of my fears as my little girl aged. I really hope your Daisy gets better very quickly and that you have health, happiness, love, and laughter with your little ones for many years to come. |
