Gagging Last week-end Maggie started gagging like she had something stuck and she was trying to get it up. Nothing came up. I took her to the vet on Monday, she was fine. He didn't find anything wrong. She has continued to gag like she has something that needs to come up, she doesn't do it all the time but it does worry me. She's eating, drinking, playing, all is normal in that area. She never did the honking and gagging when she got excited until this past week. However, she does the gagging even when she isn't excited. Should I take her for an xray? I don't know what to do, I feel like the Munchausen lady. |
Abby does this too. The doctor also said she looked fine. Some days she doesn't do it at all. Some days more. I worry all the time. Someone told me it could be allergies. Let me know if you figure it out. |
Does she do after drinking water? Or is it completely random? |
I would say random. I haven't conected drinking water. But sometimes when she comes in from outside. |

If it continues, I would try videotaping it for your vet to see and hear. Sorry I don't have any better info or suggestions. |

Irritation from intubation is possible, but theoretically it is more llikely to start right when you bring them home. My first thought would be kennel cough picked up from the vet office. |

She got the Bordetello (spray) on 7/23 then went for her dental on 7/26. Could she have gotten kennel cough after getting the Bordello? Also, I took her back to the vet on 8/1 to have her checked because of the gagging. Wouldn't he have been able to detect kennel cough at that time? He did give me a weeks worth of antibiotics and some cough tablets but they haven't really helped. He wanted to do an xray when I was there on 8/1, I decided against it, now I'm kicking myself. |
She was vaccinated fairly close to being hospitalized. Bordatella does not protect against all strains. And the vaccine itself can give them a mild case of it. There is really no easy/quick way to test for kennel cough. It is based on symptoms. Sounds like your vet is thinking along these lines. Sometimes it turns into something that does require antibios and some vets like to give them before needed just to be safe. Yes, when a vet recommends a chest xray, it should always be done. However, they were probably just wanting it to rule out some more serious things. Vet opinion will vary on when one is needed. Certainly not a bad idea when they are coughing/choking. A lot of times if kennel cough or tracheal irritation is suspected, they will just do it to be on the safe side. My dogs are just getting over kennel cough. Usually sounds much worse than it is. But I'd be concerned that your vet is concerned enough to recommend an xray... |
I did not suspect kennel cough at all since she was just vaccinated. Should the antibiotics have helped her by now? I don't know much about kennel cough but just googled it, the site I went to didn't tell me very much. Is she in pain? When she starts the gagging/hacking her little sides heave in and out, I feel like she must be in pain. I was going to take her for the xray several times this past week but she always seemed ok then she would start the gagging again. I will take her for the xray Monday. What are the chances of Buster catching it? He seems ok for now. |
It would just be one possible consideration. I wouldn't call it pain as much as discomfort. My kids coughed, sneezed, noses wet/drippy (this is what required an antibio), hacked, choked.. They still aren't totally over it. It's self limiting, so not all vets give antibios. Clavamox, doxy, and zithromax are fairly common. It does not cure the disease, but can cure secondary infections and is needed if pneumonia is suspected (or the vet feels strongly that it should be guarded against). I used robitussin with some success, but I can't recommend you try that without talking to the vet. Both of my dogs got all nasally, so they both required antibiotics. |
Have you ever watched the videos of differentiating between reverse sneezing, kennel cough, and collapsed trachea? Here is the link from the YT library: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...d-trachea.html |
She has been sneezing a lot but I didn't associate the sneezing with the gagging. I've been focused on the gagging as it seemed to be worse than the sneezing and the gagging part really caught my attention as she has never done that. The vet gave her Cefpodoxime and cough tabs. The cough tabs don't seem to help but I'm going to keep giving them to her. I'll be taking her for the xray on Monday. |
I'm sorry Maggie is sick. I do wonder about the kennel cough. It sounds a lot like kennel cough. Crystal mentioned giving robitussin and I do know that a lot of vets do prescribe it along with the antibiotics, so I would certainly ask them when you go in on Monday. Kennel cough doesn't go away quickly and sometimes lasts a good while, so be prepared for a long haul if that is what she has. |
How is Kennel Cough treated? She has had one round of antibiotics. Is there nothing else to give her? What about Buster, can he get it? She hasn't done any of the gagging today but I still plan to take her in tomorrow. I don't understand how she got Kennel Cough at the vets office. Is this common? |
From what I have heard, Kennel Cough can be easily spread from one dog to another but I don't know how - if airborne or what. |

I know you have probably spent a lot of money, but I think I would get a second opinion. There could be a little cyst in her throat or something else that first vet has just missed. Doctors and vets miss things and it never hurts to have another opinion. |

I hope your little one is better. You can do a search of the S&I forum for kennel cough. There are lots of threads about it and perhaps they will help you to deal with it. I would def recommend a chest x-ray. Your worst worry is pneumonia. This is one thread about kc and perhaps it will help you to understand better of what you're dealing with: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...nths-help.html |
Hi Jeanie. I'm just checking it to let you know I'm thinking of you guys and wondering if you have any update. Hope everything is ok. |
I tooke Maggie for the xray and it didn't show anything. She did the gagging a little bit last night, after we left the vet, of course. She doesn't appear to be sneezing as much. She's eating and drinking. She appears to be ok except for the gagging. |
Hmm. Maybe try to get it on video? |
