Poppy is not well :( Poppy was playing in the garden with a frog last night, she didn't get the frog in her mouth but she may have licked it. This morning around 9am she started to vomit, between 9am and 10.30am she vomitted around 6 times. It was all yellow bile. I called the vet and told him about the frog and the vomitting, he said frogs are not toxic to dogs but if she keeps on vomitting to bring her in. Since I called the vet she has not vomitted once, she has had a little bit to drink but no food (it is now 14:06pm). She is very sleepy and dosn't seem herself at all, do you think I should take her down to the vets even though she has not vomitted again? Or is there anything else I can do to make her less nauseous? Thank you! |
Honestly, I would take her in to be seen if it were me. Especially since she does not seem like her normal self. As far as how to stop the vomiting, I am not sure what you could do except not give her food right now which you apparently are doing. It is good she is drinking. Keep an eye on her for dehydration. Keep us updated! |
Vomiting 6 times + lethargic, yes she should be seen asap. |
I would take her to the vet. That was a lot of vomiting in a short period of time, plus w the sleepiness (lethargy). These little ones can go downhill quickly. I would rather be safe than sorry. |
Yeah.... I would take her in so they can look her over. Sending prositive vibes your way. Keep us posted. |
I have called the vet again and she has just vomitted again, he said the quickest he can see her is at about 5pm which is 2 hours from now... I'm thinking of taking her down to the emergency vet even though it is furthur away. Do you think I should take her to the emergency now or wait till the smaller vets is open? I don't want to have her in the car for too long if she has an upset stomach. :( |

I never wait which drives my husband crazy. Since she vomited again, I would go to the emergency vet. Your vet won't work you in? Did they know she has vomited 7 times and is acting lethargic? I wouldn't wait. I think she needs to be seen now. |
How far away is emergency vet? |

Sending prayers Miss Poppy is feeling better soon. |
Poor Poppy! There are frogs that indeed ARE poisonous to dogs, although I'm not sure what species you have in the UK. A YT'er in Florida, whose name I can't recall created a couple of threads about the deadly Bufo frog. After doing my own research I found this to be absolutely true. |
Hi everyone, I'm back from the vets. They wern't exactly sure what is wrong with her, but they don't think it is because of the frog. They think she may have eaten something in the garden which has given her an upset tummy, or that she may have a blockage. They said she is slightly dehydrated but not dangerously so, they have given me a little syringe to give her water with if she won't drink herself. They don't want me to feed her until tomorrow, only water, and would like to see her back in the morning. She has just had a big drink of water and kept it down, and is now sleeping next to me. So fingers crossed she is feeling better soon, and I will update you once I have been back to the vets tomorrow. :) Thanks for your concern! |
Happy to hear she went to the vet. I was thinking she might have eaten something in the yard and it wasn't the frog. Hope she continues to feel better. |
I'm glad you got her in to see the vet. I hope Poppy gets better soon. It's scary when these little ones get sick. |
Thank you, I know it's scary and very upsetting when they can't tell you what's wrong :( we will just have to keep our fingers crossed and see what the vet says tomorrow. On a brighter note she didn't vomit in the car which surprised me, and she was able to keep water down from the drink she's just had. She is also interested in food again as she is trying to stare down my BF for his chicken sandwich, so at least she has an appetite LOL shame I can't give her any food until tomorrow. |
I am glad you git her in to the vet. Hopefully she will feel better soon. It's hard when they don't have a specific reason for their illness but it looks like the medicine is helping. |
So glad you got her in! Sometimes it is better to go and just be on the safe side which is exactly what you did. :) Glad that she is getting an appetite back and she will be able to eat soon. Hoping she will be all better tomorrow. |
I hope little Poppy will be fine. It sounds like she's settling down. I'll check tomorrow evening to see your update.:) |
Glad that Poppy seems to be feeling a bit better. Hopefully she will be feeling ever better tomorrow. :) |
Hi everyone, Poppy is almost back to her normal self. She is running around and making lots of noise, she wasn't sick at all last night and has been able to keep water down. She has been eating a bit of grass but other then that she seems okay. Will update once i've been to the vets today. |
So glad to hear she is feeling better! :) |
So glad to hear! |
Poppy is doing much better today, vet said she must have just eaten something in the garden which upset her tummy and to keep an eye on her. :) |

I'm glad to hear Poppy is feeling better. |
UPDATE: So we came back from the vets and everything was good. Poppy ate a bit of grass and vomitted but it was only grass. She then started to have a lot of diarrhea and got quite lethargic so I took her back to the vets. The vet gave her something to make her stools more firm and said if it dosn't work then they would like to do some x-rays to see if she has a blockage (but they don't think she has). So we were home from the vets about an hour and Poppy was still acting quite sleepy and lethargic, but she was drinking. Then she started to have lots of diarrhea with blood in it so I called the emergency vet straight away and took her down there (this is a different vet to the one I usually use), again they said they don't think she has a blockage but just a tummy bug. They said her gums were a nice colour and she was just a tiny bit dehydrated, he gave her an antibiotic injection then she began to vomit yellow bile while we were leaving, the vet gave her another injection to try and stop the vomitting and said that she should be better in a couple of days as he thinks it's just a tummy bug. He said if the diarrhea dosn't clear up in the next couple of days then to bring her back and they will do some x-rays. Also said to bring her straight back if the vomitting dosn't stop. :( Fingers crossed she is better very soon, I'm so worried about her. She has drank lots since we got back from the vets and has brought most of it back up, but I think that's because she is drinking too much too quickly. She is sleeping now and we are going to try her with a little bit of boiled chicken and rice tomorrow. Will keep everyone updated :( please pray for Poppy.. I am so worried. |

With all I've been through with Jackson, I am wondering why the vet is not doing an x-ray right away. Did they do bloodwork? Bloody diarrhea would REALLY concern me. I just wouldn't let this wait itself out and get worse. Of course because I'm paranoid I'm going to be quick to say "be sure it's not pancreatitis" only because it's what I've been dealing with and Jackson exhibited some of these symptoms but it's probably something else. He, however, was never lethargic and only had one bout of diarrhea and he was dehydrated enough (and lipase levels were up enough) to be admitted into the hospital for over 24hrs. I don't know, this just seems like a pretty concerning case and I am wondering why the vets seem to be not very concerned. A couple days of vomiting and diarrhea for a little dog can kill them. |
