Thanks, yorkiemini.:) Crystal, glad & sad to hear it could be the food, though I know that's not definitive. So the blood panel would be able to confirm or eliminate pancreatitis? Is the cPL blood work as well? I will be restricting any human treats to "safe for dogs" human food. I don't want to cause this again or for a first time if it's not the problem. |
So sorry your baby is ill and I really hope she feels better soon!! Good luck at the vet tomorrow and please let us know how it goes! |
I'm just seeing this thread ... oh my... so sorry this is happening. The cPL is the test for pancreatitis... My Peek a Boo got it once when DH fed him cheese... but it can be different for each dog. Another member's dog got pancreatitis when she fed hers lamb dog food. Sometimes it's hard to determine what sets them off. Had she been outside at all playing today? Was it really hot there? Vomiting is one symptom of heat stroke... If you can take her temp, that would be good. Is she painful at all anywhere? Can you touch her back right in front of her hips? Does she appear bloated in her tummy? Is she acting normal, laying in familiar spots/ Or is she having trouble settling down? Any stretching when she gets up or lies down? Any hunching when she walks? Any panting? Are her eyes bloodshot? Pupils equal and reactive? To entice her to drink, you can add a small amount of low sodium chicken broth to some water... only let her take very small amounts at one time, every 30-60 minutes. Milk can cause diarrhea if it's something she doesn't get on a regular basis, it isn't really good for the pups anyway. Any new scented candles or plug ins in the house? Dogs can dehydrate quickly bc they loose alot of fluid when vomiting is involved, and they can't get it back quickly bc when they drink too much, they just throw up again. If you can get her to the EV, they can give her an injection to stop the vomiting, and give her IV or subQ fluids to restore balance in her system, to help make up for all the vomiting. I hope she starts feeling better soon.... and I'm sorry things are so bad for you right now, I'll pray and send positive energy that things turn around quickly for you... Hugs, Kathy |

Definitely no human food...and don't put milk in her water. Milk is not easy for them to digest and could make her symptoms worse. Just keep a close eye on her gums. If she is dehydrating, you really do need to find a way to get her some help. I am hoping since the vomiting has stopped that perhaps she will be good until tomorrow morning. Will say a prayer for her tonight. |

I have touched & pressed her every where & she doesn't mind at all, she's staying with me and DD at all times, nothing new really. She was restless after this second bout, I think she thinks it's bad to throw up. She'll do it once & walk until she can't then do it again, she's never ever been scolded or anything maybe she sees it upsets me? I don't know. I guess she could be trying to hide pain from me as well if it does hurt. I checked her eyes, reactive & the same size, don't look bloodshot. She just peed a little bit. I can't take her to the ER tonight unless I really see her go downhill. I know that sounds terrible, but I just don't have the means. She seems much better than earlier, I plan on pulling an all nighter & being at the vet when the doors open. |

Her gums aren't as sticky as before & are still very pink. I pulled the water with milk. Just since I started this response she is bouncing off the walls now, barking to get me to play, tail wagging. I'll still be taking her in though, no matter what she pulls out of her hat between now and morning. |

To answer your blood question, "here" at the ER xrays, a blood panel with CBC, and a cPL would be recommended. What owners agree to and what the vet recommends first varies. It's something a vet needs to talk you through. The cPL is pancreas specific. As Linda said, amylase and lipase are usually abnormal if there is a pancreas issue, so some vets will skip the cPL, esp. if there is a money issue. That said, the test is considered pretty important here. But if something else shows up in the blood, it may alert the vet to something going on and it may have nothing to do with the pancreas at all. Whether you give anything besides water is up to you. Ellie gets nothing by mouth during a flare up. If I had to give her anything, it would be water alone (or have her lick ice). That is her doctor's preference (and may not be the preference of your pup's doctor). |
I'm so sorry that Princess is sick. You must be so scared. I will be sending good thoughts for you both tonight. |
I am so sorry that things are so tight right now for you and your kids. I can not imagine being where you are and wanting to just fix what is wrong with your furbaby. I will keep you all in my prayers. Please let us know how things are in the morning and good luck with the interview. |
This is the longest night of my life. I have spent endless hours trying to figure out something & there is nothing. Princess vomited again, about 30 minutes ago. Very little, but she tried about 4 times. She's been laying around & doesn't care if I call her or even if I wiggle the car keys. I picked her up to talk to her & she felt hot so I took her temp. I am assuming rectal temp with a human thermometer is correct, no -/+ a degree or whatever. Her temp was 99.9. So I read about that & it said that could mean early hypothermia, possibly related to hypoglycemia. I called the ER vet, he told me to give her some honey, she wont take it so I guess I should force her? That's what he said even though I told him it caused her to attempt vomiting the last time. He reiterated they absolutely wont see her without cash or card upon check in. I did check her gums & did the pinch of skin & she doesn't seem dehydrated by those symptoms though I'm sure she is. 8:00a.m. cannot come soon enough. Please say a prayer for Princess. |
Oh my. Please give us an update on Princess as soon as you can. Saying prayers for her. |
Sending lots of prayers and best wishes for Princess. How is she this morning? |
Your update is one of the first things that I saw this morning. I am ill just thinking about you and your baby. I will be in prayer for you both. Keep us updated |
Checking in for an update... you're probably at the vet's now... hope Princess is doing okay.... for future reference, when a dog won't take Nutrical or syrup or honey by mouth, put a bit on your finger and rub it on her gums, just run your finger all along the insides of her mouth, between her cheek and teeth. No need to open her mouth to do this. Praying she is okay.... |
