Maximo's eye again Maximo's corneal ulcer is back. Looks like it didn't heal correctly. I caught it right away and got him to the doctor immediately. The doctor is giving him one week on antibiotics and if the eye doesn't look perfect, Max will have grid keratotomy, scratching of the cornea to stimulate proper healing. No getting out of it this time. The ulcer is very, very superficial, which is good news. This is going to be another long week. No walks, no playing. It's hard balancing protecting Max while keeping Teddy happy. :( |
Kristin, I'm so sorry you and Maximo have to deal with this again. Any idea why it's not healing correctly? Is there something that is preventing it from healing? (wind, foreign objects, shampoo, etc). I hope this can be the end this time. In the meantime, I wouldn't worry so much about making Teddy happy. He'll be ok. |
Oh noooo. :( I'm so sorry. Hopefully it will heal quickly. You are such a dedicated owner watching those eyeballs and getting him to the vet at the first sign of an issue recurring. He is lucky to have you. :) |
Oh no, poor Maximo, I hope his eye heals soon. |
I am so, so sorry Kristin. I always think of you and Maximo. He is in the best of care in your loving arms, and I am confident his eye will heal. I just wish you both didn't have to go through this again. Please know how much I care and wish that your beautiful boy heals very soon. |

Kristin, I'm so sorry you and Max are having to deal with this again. Poor baby boy, he's lucky to have you taking such good care of him. You're both in my thoughts and prayers for a complete recovery this time. Hugs, Bonny |
Thank you, thank you, thank you everyone for your well wishes, positive thoughts, and prayers. Maximo and I deeply appreciate your support. I carried Max on his usual walking route this morning and I think the fresh air did some good. He was happy to get outside, even if it meant "riding in the boat" (folded up in his bed), wearing his party hat for everyone to see. This started yesterday with Max winking a bit, but his eye looked fine. I went ahead and scheduled a vet appointment that would have been this morning. Within half an hour, Max was holding his eye shut and I could see the beginning of the ulcer: a small round spot in the cornea was starting to wrinkle in exactly the same place as the last ulcer. We went in to see the doctor right away. I was asked why the doctor thinks the ulcer may heal properly this time and why he doesn't want to go ahead and do the keratotomy right now. With indolent (non-healing or improperly healing) ulcers, one of the procedures that is done involves taking a q-tip and swabbing (debriding) the loose or poorly formed cornea away so that the cells have a chance to fill in the gap properly and attach correctly to the layer underneath. Only a doctor should perform this procedure. During the staining of Max's eye to assess the ulcer, the doctor manipulated the eyelid to clear away loose or poorly formed material, in effect, doing something similar to debridement. |
Oh Kristin, I am so sorry to read this. I was hoping little Max was clear of his pesky eye problem and his party hat. ;) I will be thinking of him and praying he heals up for good this time. Bless his little heart. |
I'm really truly sorry....I'll be keeping your little one in my thoughts...I wish I can offer you advice like you've given me... |
How is Max this morning? I suppose it will take some time for the antibiotics. I'm hopeful that Max's eye can heal on it's own this time and if it doesn't it seems as though that procedure will certainly help. You've been such a great Mom and put a smile on my face thinking about Max "riding in the boat". |
Oh, no not Maximo. Poor baby and mommy. I hope it works this time, what a shame to have to go through this again. We'll have to double up on our prayers this time. Please get better fast little man, we love to see your handsome face. |
I thought about little Max a lot today and we're still sending our prayers for him to get better soon. I know he had to love getting outside. A ride in mommy's arms is better medicine than anything else. |
