Raccoon Attack! 4 Attachment(s) This morning about 1:30am my lactating mama, Mini, who has three babies only 3 weeks old heard something outside and flew off our bed, down the hall and out the doggie door onto the decking! My hubby heard her barking, then the 'ol man, Chipper, he's 11yrs, hypoglycemic and now doesn't have any teeth on top except his two canine, and is also on arthritus meds follows her and we hear both barking ~ then one growling and screaming! My hubby flies out of bed ... (all this happened so quickly) ... when I got there he was running, stomping and yelling at the top of his lungs on the decking ... a raccoon had one of my Yorkies underneath the decking! I started screaming "Mini, Mini, Mini" and "Chipper, Chipper, Chipper" ~ then Mini came dashing from the other end, up the stairs and across the deck to me, she was terrified and shaking like a leaf! My hubby is still stomping and yelling for me to get a flashlight! The fight was still going on, horrible growling and screaming! I ran for a flashlight and when I got back, hubby had Chipper and practically threw him to me as he ran for his rifle! Chipper was dripping blood from his face! He was covered in blood and dirt! I wrapped him in a towel, and ran to stop my hubby ~ it's a felony to fire a gun in city limits! I have never seen him want to kill anything so much as he wanted to kill that hugh raccoon! But, I stopped him by telling him he had to help me with Chipper. Well, we put Chipper in the sink and washed as much dirt off as we could and flushed the puncture wounds as best we could. As I dried him I cut his coat off, down to the skin, the only way I could see how bad he was hurt ... he'll live but he's not going to win any beauty contests for quite a while! From the puncture wounds the raccoon had his face in it's mouth! He is so lucky neither eye area puncture hit his eyeballs, plus I don't know what the under ear punctures will do. The raccoon also had his right foreleg shoulder in it's mouth. The rest look like claw wounds. The Vet agreed he was extremely lucky he wasn't killed, and that he is one tough old dog! I know Chippper went for the attack and, in doing so, saved young Mini's life! I think she knows it too, she is being so attentive and loving to him when she isn't hiding under my dresser today. She will not go outside, we have to carry her and we're taking both out the front door until the shock wears off. Chipper is on two antibiotics and pain meds, now we have to watch for abcess. We never put food outside, those raccoons came for the dogs ~ they got my neighbors three kittens a couple of weeks ago. We are going to put lattice up to block off going under the decking. I'm going to ask my Hubby about getting a trap and relocating them far, far away! And, from now on my Yorkies have to wake us to go outside at night ~ doggie door is closed! We don't live in Country ~ this are neighborhood raccoons! I've heard of things like this happening, but didn't believe it would happen to us! Edit! I wish I knew how to make the pics go big !! The wounds look terrible but they're too small for anyone to see! |
oh my God!!!! your poor baby!!! he saved Minni's life!! stupid raccoon!!!! thank God you and your hubby acted so quickly!! i cannot even imagine how scared you must have been!! :( |

What a horrible thing to be woken up to!! I am so glad that they seem to be doing O.K. Poor Chipper he's a hero... |
I am so glad he is going to be ok. That is horrible. I would get a trap and get rid of those stupid raccoons. Poor little puppies they must have been so scared. Glad you were able to get there in time!! We send lots of get well hugs and kisses!! |
Racoons are so vicious, its not even funny. I owned three at one point and got rid of them very quick as they were outrageously aggressive. I can't imagine what your poor baby went through because of that f$#@ing thing. :boy_hug: |
OMG! I'm SO glad to hear that your poor Chipper survived such a vicious attack!! After reading your story I'm going to close my doggie door tonight! |
I am so glad he is ok . |
Oh wow how scary. I am glad Chipper is okay. |
WHAT A TERRIBLE STORY :( SOOOOO glad chipper is going to be oK!! Poor thing! He was protecting his turf and little Minni! What a brave little boy!!! |
Wow, think if your husband had come flying out of bed that way! Way to go husband! |
OMG OMG !~~ THAT COULD HAVE BEEN DEADLY !!! Oh wow - I would have let your hubby shoot that racoon ! I hate violence against animals but he came on YOUR turf and attacked YOUR babies !! Did you call the vet ? I hope that racoon wasn't rabid .....Please ask your vet if you need to take more precautions against what that awful racoon did to your baby. Bless your heart - you all saved them...& what a little Hero Chipper is !! I can't believe he took on a racoon - What a little daredevil .....My heart was racing reading your post and I'm so glad everyone is OK NOW ~! BIG HUGS to Chipper ~~ I really hope he mends and is going to be ok and that Mimi stops being scared - WOW - what a scare !! |
I'm so glad he's ok! I would have been so scared if that was me. Good thing nothing serious happened!! Thats so cute he was saving Mini from gettig hurt...what a god little guy! |
Im so glad that Chipper is going to be ok. I was so scared when I was reading your story, I expected a worst ending. Im just glad I was wrong and Chipper and Mini are fine. I hope Chipper heals well after being attack by that horrible raccoon. I was wondering about rabies also. Chipper you are our Hero. Gucci sends puppy kisses and huggies to the family. |
Yea to chipper~~ Glad that chipper, Mimi and the babies are ok!! |
I am so glad to see that Chipper will be okay! My gosh, what an ordeal you all went through! I am scared of raccoons when I let Maddie out at night. I know they prowl around here and have thought of the possibility of them attacking Maddie. After reading this, I will be even more careful! What a sweetheart your little Chipper is to save Mini! Bless his heart! |
That is so saaaadddd!! I am sorry you had to go through something like that. How awful is that!! I understand why your husband was willing to kill the raccoon. Look at what he did to your baby. |
Damn, Racooon's. I am glad Chipper is going to be ok.. |
I am so glad your story had a happy ending. And thank you for sharing with us. It serves as a reminder that we must always be on guard. It is a crying shame that we cannot even let our own dogs out in the safety of their own back yard!!! |
Wow! Between the coyotes and the raccoons in suburbia we can never be too safe even when we have fences. That is a scary story!! i am so glad Chipper is going to be okay! He deserves to be spoon fed from now on from a silver bowl...poor heroic old man!! |
Wow! What a story! I am so glad all is going to be ok. Just think, good 'ol Chipper saved Mini AND the babies lives, since she is still feeding them. What a wild night you had. I dont blame you for keeping the doggie door closed, they can get outta there before you can open your eyes. |
Oh my ... I 'm so glad they are ok (if you can say that) I'm always worried with my little Petey and animals, but I was thinking more like a hawk or an owl.. Never really thought about a raccoon.. |
OMGosh, I am so glad they are OK, that is so scarey... Your husband and Chipper are truely hero's... |
Oh my how scared you must of been. Im so glad both your babies are ok. |
What an INTENSE event!!!! I found myself leaning closer and closer to the computer screen as I read it. Oh, poor little Chipper! I can only imagine your terror when you saw blood on him!! To tell the truth, I wasn't expecting an actual attack, never even heard of coons actually going and attacking peoples pets, just trying to eat their food. I'm sure the brave little guy is getting lots of extra lovin' right now. I'm sure your husband was ready to burst with fury! Sure hope Chipper heals without complication. You must be so proud of him. |
OH MY!!!! I was ready to cry with relief by the time I got to the end of your post! I could step right in and put myself in your shoes. I live in a populated subdivision in Houston. My husband gets up and walks at 5:00 AM and often when he's leaving my two yorkies wake up and want to go outside. I almost ALWAYS would open the back door and let them out because we have a privacy fenced in yard. Well, for whatever reason......that particular morning I turned on the outside light before letting them out and there stood a HUGE raccoon looking at me in the door!! Of course, they were wild to get at him, but I was frozen in terror (yes, I'm a wimp) and he ran away instantly. I just left them in the house and told them if they had to go that bad, they'd have to go on the floor! I waited till husband got home and it was daylight before I let them out! NOW, I don't dream of letting them out without turning on the light. We, also, have NO food outside, so I don't know what he was doing there.......it's scary! I'm so glad both of your yorkies are okay. Even your female is probably stressed to the max! I hope everyone on here is paying attention!!!!!!!!!! |
oh my god were you lucky thank god you both responded so quickly. What a brave little man you have protecting your little mama! I wish for your little man a speedy recovery with lots of doting and treats:) |
I sure hope he heals good and didn't get rabies. We had a barn cat that got in a fight with a coon and she won and killed the coon, but she was pretty beat up and had to be put down because she caught rabies from it. I think if that would of happen gun law or not I woulda shot it or beat it to death with the butt of the gun. |
Poor dog. Glad he will be okay though. Give him lots of treats and loving because he deserves it!!! In Pasadena, while walking my doggies late at night, I've had to keep my distance and wait for coyotes to walk away from me. My Yorkie is fearless and will bark, so I've had to distract him a bit so he doesn't realize that a coyote was about 30 feet away. Scary. I've always wondered if pepper spray will cause them to run away...(if I had to use it) |
WOW,, I often think of that, because we have tons of raccoons and skunks and Bailey charges anything and everything before I even see what it is, and he is always on a leash, but if they see something they go for it, they are not afraid of anything! Well Im glad everyone is ok.. and I hope ya catch the coon and relocate him,,maybe he got a scare too and won't be back, to mess with the CRAZY YORKIES! |
