Need advise ASAP Please could someone give me any advise, my Yorkie has gone into labour tonight and I think her first pup has come out bottom first and unfortunately has died. She has eaten the bag off it and I think she is eating the pub, I cannot get close enough to take it off her or see what she is actually trying to do because she is extremely angry. I am very worried about the next one to come out but she will not let anyone help. Please could anyone advise on what I should do, I have just left her in her bed at the moment and turned the light off. Thanks. |
I'll post in the breeder's section for you. Unfortunately, it will be necessary to get near her and probably take her to the ER. |
You need to get to the ER VET NOW! She could die if the puppy is stuck halfway out of the birth channel. This is very serious and a medical emergency. |
Hmm. Is the pup stuck halfway out? If yes, then that is definitely an emergency!! You'll have to find someway to handle her. |
No the pubs totally out, she was dragging it about quite brutally and now shes just lay on it. |
Call the ER vet, describe the situation, and ask what they want you to do. Can you muzzle her for half a minute to get her into a crate? |
If you do not know what you are doing then you need to go to the vet with her. Has she had puppies before? How much does she weight? How large was the father? Have you taken her to a vet previously to be examined during her pregnancy? Did she have an Xray and do you know how many puppies she is expected to deliver? |
Just spoke to the vet they said leave her for now and keep checking on her. Shes already in a box, we made a bed in a box for her to nest in. Im just worried and dont really want to leave her, shes a very small dog and its her first litter, Im also worrried that if we go near her she will kill any other pups she has. |
The vet didn't want you to bring her in? I am surprised by this if she is a very small dog. I thought many times they end up having c-sections. |
I cannot give you any advice other than I would be finding vet that will see her now. This may mean taking her to an ER vet. Do you know how many pups to expect? Do you know what signs to be looking if she is in distress? This situation just sounds to scary for me to want to experience alone. The fear of loosing my girl would have me on my way for Professional Help. |
No the vet said if she seems ok then jus keep her here and keep checking on her. Iv just checked her again and she seems fine but very angry. I cant get near her to see if shes had another like I said Im worried that she will kill anymore pups if I go near her. |
I have never let Rosie have puppies so I can't advise there. However, I would insist that the vet see your girl. I think the first litter she may need some help. Even if she is angry, you need to figure out a way to check on her. Are there any breeders who can help here? |
omg, THAT IS CRAZY, please call another vet and have her x ray, if she has a puppy stuck in the birth canal, she can die,I just had puppies 7 days ago so I know a little thing or two about whelping. Please she can go down hill pretty quickly, is ok to eat the placenta but NOT the puppy, at least I would never let my girl eat one. she needs an x ray NOW.. sending LOTS of prayers your way.. |
I know what to look for if she is havin trouble and she seems to be ok, I font know how many she is having im just worried that the first pup has died, will she be doing anything wrong? |
I agree that you should probably get her to a vet. Some dogs just do not make good mothers but one of the symptoms of eclampsia is aggression towards her puppies so you really need some help here figuring out what is going on. If she is going to have more puppies, you certainly want to try to save them, don't you? I'm so sorry, this is tragic. :( |
wanted to add that you might want to try getting some calcium into her.... either calsorb if you have on hand or if not maybe some tums? |
Just curious, did you research any of this before your dog got pregnant? It might help you to be more prepared in ER situations. I wish you the best. I hope it all works out for your baby girl. |

Rite Iv just managed to get in and check on her, shes had another and its moving around, she was licking it and cleaning it but when I got to close she began to growl again so I left her to it. the pup was not making any noise but was definalty moving around and I think it was trying to nuzzle, is this right straight after birth or could I jus be wrong and its just moving about? |
Surely you did some sort of research when you found out she was pregnant??? I would be at the ER vet....but that's me. My 1lb puppy has been at the vet 10 days. |

From your last post it seems she has a live pup. Is it the first one that you thought was dead or is this a 2nd pup. If so, where is the dead one? I don't know what your relationship with your dog was before now, but it sounds to me like she A. - is very nervous (and in pain or discomfort from labor) which would attribute to her aggressiveness towards you, and/or B. - she senses your nervousness which in turn causes her to be more nervous than she is, also causing aggression. You need to keep your cool and go in there and STAY with her; even if you just sit there and watch. Slowly, when you are calm, inch your way closer to her as you gain her trust. Look at her and her pups to make sure she and they are okay. IF you see she is still having trouble, please don't call, just take her and whatever pups she has to the nearest ER vet. One seemingly small problem can get BIG very quickly and you could lose her and pups. |

I did not mean to sound like lecturing my apologies if it came across that way, I sense FEAR on the owner's side, and nerves too, so all that might have the bitch over the top. I hope she follows advise and is very important that she gets some calcium and nutricion in that girl NOW. |
You either have to get in there or take her to the vet so someone can watch over and assist this Mom. Sometimes right after giving birth the Mom is so focused on the afterbirth and can ignore the pup. It could die if the sac isn't opened. Also, there's a very real danger of her injuring or killing a pup. It can get eaten along with an after birth or the Mom could chew a leg tearing the sac. When it comes to cutting the cord, it's very easy for the Mom to cause a hernia or even to pull out the baby's intestines. For those reasons, it's important to be right there....tear the sac and cut the baby's cord. This breed can't have babies on their own. Not meaning to sound rude, but do you know how? How far away is the ER vet? |
