Teddy has corneal abrasions This morning, I noticed Teddy squinting. I took a closer look at noticed his eyes were a little bloodshot. I cleaned his eyes as I do each morning and put in his top knot. About 1/2 hour later, I noticed he was still squinting. I called my vet and brought him in. They stained his eyes and he has corneal abrasions on both eyes and needs an eye antibiotic ointment and a repeat visit in two days to check on it. My vet told me eyes are nothing to wait on, and that sometimes by the time people come home from work, the eye is starting to ulcerate. I am so glad I brought him in. My vet said the eye scratches were shallow and looked fresh with no ulcer starting. However, had I waited, who knows what might have been! How did it happen? I don't know...he goes outside for about 10-15 minutes a day in our yard. I am thinking he got a little too close to the oregano plant which has sticks and maybe brushed up against it. I don't think it was the rose bushes because she said they were very superficial. |
Cathy I'm so glad you brought him in!! I'm hoping it'll heal quickly with no further injury. |
Poor Teddy! He's so lucky he's got you. Thank goodness you got him in as fast you did! Saying prayers the ointment does the trick for him quickly. |
I am happy that you brought him right in and hoping the antibiotic ointment works well for him. |
wow, glad that you noticed it and took Teddy in. Hope he starts to feel better quickly. |
I am glad you brought him in right away. Hopefully his eyes will heal quickly. |
Maximo and I send best wishes for Teddy for his eyes to heal quickly. In Maxman's case, the pain of his corneal scratches from the under eyelid eyelashes caused him to paw at his eye and create the ulcer. That, and not knowing that he had these corneal scratches, I burned his eyes during bathtime, which caused him to rub his head and eyes. :( Great job Cathy seeing the signs and getting Teddy in quickly before it became a more serious problem. |
So sorry Teddy is dealing with this, Armani had the same thing a few months back and he healed up in no time, we wish the same for Teddy. |
Aww..poor Teddy! I hope he feels better soon. |
Sorry Teddy has to deal with this. Sending prayers that he'll be better in no time at all. |
glad you noticed and took care of it so fast!! Hope he is better very soon!! Shinja |
I hope others take after you when they notice an eye issue. They can become extremely painful and serious so fast. Way to be there mom! :) Maddie sends good thoughts to Teddy that his eye gets better soon. She said she is more than willing to lend him his cone if he needs it. ;) |
It is easy to happen, on dogs and people. Years ago, I had it when one of our dogs pawed my eye. Glad you noticed it fast and got him in for treatment. That heals pretty fast. |
Glad you caught it so fast, Joey had this and I don't know how he got it either. At the time we were growing out his topknot and I used human hairspray on a toothbrush to brush the little forehead hairs in place. My guess is that the hair fell and the hairspray iritated his eye and he tried rubbing it. The vet said this can happen even if they rub their faces on a carpet. So no more human products on his hair, he did have ulceration in one only one eye the other eye was fine. I wonder if it's unusual for both eyes to be effected? The medication cleared it right up. |

Max did not squint with most of his eye problems, although squinting is typical because bright light is painful when the pup has an ulcer. Some of the other symptoms to look for include: bloodshot eyes, red inner eyelids, pawing at the eye, green or yellow discharge, excessive tearing or watery eyes, colored cloudiness in the eye, and changes in behavior. Some dogs will hide or remove themselves in some way. Max wanted to be closer to me, sit on my lap, and he slept more. |
