zowi has trace amounts of blood / protein in urine :( i am a very concerned momma right now. my 10 1/2 year old baby girl zowi has been urinating more frequent than usual, and having potty accidents in the middle of the kitchen floor. this is very unlike her, so i decided to take her to see our beloved dogtor yesterday. she did an in house urinalysis that showed trace amounts of blood and protein in her urine. she said that it is done with a test strip that sometimes isn't sensitive enough to pick up on everything. so she sent it out to the lab yesterday for further evaluation and will call with the results of that today when she gets them. zowi received an antibiotic injection yesterday and will start on 2 weeks worth of clavamox later on today. we are hoping that this is just the beginning of a urinary tract infection. i am so worried, hoping this isn't kidney problems.... has anyone else had this similar result with thier furbaby? if yes, what was the outcome???? last august zowi had bloodwork and urinalysis done as a routine check up. that is when she started to gain some weight, so we wanted to rule out a thyroid problem, etc. bloodwork was perfect but urinalysis had trace amounts of protein. she had same round of antibiotics and 2 weeks later was retested urinalysis and it came back perfect. there haven't been any other problems untill now. zowi has also lost a little bit of weight. if she did not have these other symptoms, it would be a good thing, but now i'm a bit concerned. we have been feeding her blue buffalo weight management and excersing her as much as possible with lots of walks and dog park running. plus, our one year old yorkie pixie does encourage her to be more active. in february before her dental she weighed 10.6 pounds. her doc said she would like to see her weigh 9 pounds. yesterday zowi weighed 10 pounds even. february's bloodwork also came back perfect. so any positive thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated as always! thank you so much in advance! you guys are the best! :animal-pa |
Connie, I sure hope it is nothing serious. I have no idea why, but hopefully you will be getting answers soon, and the news will be good. Thinking about your little dog. Have a nice day and stay well. |
I don't have any experience with this or advice to offer, but I wanted to send best wishes to Zowi that this nothing serious and that it will be fixed easily with the medication. You are a good mommy for getting her to the doctor right away. Keep us updated. |

Update so zowi and i had to go back to the dogtors office this afternoon.... still no results to report unfortunately... the lab was unable to perform the more extensive test because there wasn't enough urine to do it. they did perform pretty much the same test that was done in office yesterday, with the same results. so today they took another sample and said it would be plenty and i will have results tomorrow. in the meantime, zowi is of course continuing the antibiotic (clavamox) prescribed yesterday. i will update when i know more.... |
Keeping Zowie in my prayers... |

I will keep Zowi in my prayers that it is nothing serious. My Pixie had a urinalysis done today and hers came back with trace amounts of white cells, blood and protein and her ph level was off. It is always such a worry with these babies. |
I am sorry your little Zowi is having this problem. I have no advice to offer but will say a prayer it is nothing serious. Hopefully, a minor issue that can be cleared up in no time. Sending well wishes to Zowi. ((hugs)) |

results so i am pretty sure that i got positive news today. zowi's urinalysis results came back normal! (other than trace amounts of blood and protein) the dr said in order to be concerned there would need to be around a count of 20, but zowi only has 2. thats the good news... but i am still worried. so i asked what would possibly be causing the trace amounts of blood and protein??? she said that kidney problems can go undetected until they have lost most of their function. she also said that her urine has been very diluted so that could be early signs of cushings and to keep an eye on it to see if it continues to be clear. i can't see why zowi would pee in the middle of my kitchen floor right in front of me (this has happened 3 times in the past week) if she wasn't trying to tell me something. the dr said the next step is to do an ultrasound to rule out the possibility of any masses. she said that she would not expect to find any though. our regular vet is on vacation as of friday, i wish i had her opinion. but as of right now we are planning on going ahead with the ultrasound asap. thanks so much everyone for your prayers and support on here. we greatly appreciate it! hugs to you all! |
Good Luck Connie. Glad you got some good news, but still a lot to make you worry. The Ultrasound will really help detect any problems in that area. I know how important it is to have your own Vet available when you need him/her. Since Carlo's Illness, we have worked with several Specialists, Internal Medicine and Sorgeon. If you ever need a referal, let me know. Hope it gets better for you guys as all need to healthy for the Boat Ride down the Chicago River this summer. |
I will keep Zowi in my prayers that the US will return clean results and that the problem is not a serious one. Keep those updates coming. |
I'm keeping you and Zowi in my prayers. Sending good thoughts and hugs to you both. |

I always keep you, Zowi, and Pixie in my thoughts, heart, and prayers. I have grown to care about your family and your happiness. When I first read about Zowi my heart dropped, and I hope you can find the answers to what is causing her problems. I am praying for great news from the ultrasound. |
