Pixie is acting freaked out. Last week Pixie started acting scared of the storms we were having. She is 5 1/2 and never showed and concern about storms before. We had another storm with just a few thunder claps a couple of days ago and it took her quite awhile after the storm to calm down. Now tonight we have no storms any where near and she is acting so strange. She won't settle down, she keeps wanting to go outside, I let her outside she runs right back in. She wouldn't eat her treat but did eat some wet dog food which they don't normally get. I just wanted to see if she would eat it. She doesn't appear to be in any pain, I checked her all over. I just gave her a dose of her metacam for her bicep tendonitis to see if that helps calm her down and help if she is in any pain. I just had her yearly check up and her blood work was fine. I did give her her Revolution for the first time this season yesterday, but she has had it for years with no problems. I will take her to my vet tomorrow if she doesn't start acting ok or to the ER vet if she gets worse. I just hate to take her to a strange er vet when she is already freaked out. Has any one experienced anything like this with any of their babies. Please keep Pixie in your prayers. Thanks |
Don't have experience with this but want to send prayers and hugs to Pixie! |
I know that dogs have a tendecy to sense when bad weather is coming. My old Cairn Cammie use to act that way when the weather was about to get kind of nasty. But I agree with you, if she continues acting weird like that and it's beautiful and sunny outside, I would check with the vet. Poor girl! Keep us updated! |
Teddy did the same thing recently, acted panicked when there was nothing visible on the weather radar. We didn't have blue, sunny skies, however, and I wonder if he was reacting to pressure changes. I put the Thundershirt on him and he relaxed immediately. I hope you can get to the bottom of this with Pixie. |
Oh no! I hope she's all right! Poor baby! Sounds like she may be sensing something... |
Thanks. I just looked at the weather channel and their is some rain about 100 miles away, I don't think she could be reacting to that. I talked to her vet yesterday when I had Cali in for her yearly about her sudden fear of thunder. She said the thunder shirts work great on a lot of dogs. The thing is Pixie doesn't like clothes on and that freaks her out so I don't know how the thunder shirt would go over. She said I could try Rescue Remedy to see if helps her. She has settled down now with the Metacam. |
Prayers for Pixie. |
Some members report good results when they cover their pups with a blanket.... if anything it may warm her up and make her sleepy... then again, my DH and I get really achy (old bones, lol) sometimes 3-4 days before a storm hits... wonder if her surgery bothers her like that? |
I don't think Metacam would do anything for her mood. Maybe she was uncomfortable?? That is all it is, an anti inflammatory that would help with discomfort. It is not a pain med that would alter her mood and/or settle her down. |
Its so terrible when they are scared like that. Mandy didn't get afraid of storms until she was older. We thought maybe she had gone outside and a big clap of thunder or something scared her. From then on the only way she would settle down would be to get next to dh in bed and that would calm her. For some reason she always wanted her daddy at that time, even though she was really more attached to me. You might try a calming pill of some kind. I'm sure the vet would give you something. I started later giving her a pill when we knew rain was in the forecast. It did help some. Hope your baby gets better. Its hard seeing them so stressed. |

hmmm, could she have developed arthritis? and maybe feeling some of the pain from the weather like humans? I know my joints get out of whack when the weather goes wacky. (??) Sending good thoughts and prayers for Pixie. |

I'm glad she has settled down. |
Patti...I feel so bad and am praying that whatever it is with Pixie, that it is easily treated and she can be back to herself soon. It's such a worry when you have no clue. Hugs to you! |
HI Patti~I'm sorry that Pixie is still acting strange. I bought a Thundershirt for Bogey and he does every well during the storms and now fireworks. Bogey will wear clothes but I don't put them on him all the time but the Thundershirt did work for him. They are guaranteed or your money back so why not give it a try. Rescue Remedy did nothing for Bogey. :( |
I do not have any advice, but I a sorry little Pixie is doing this. I hope you find the root of the problem so she can be good as new in no time. Hugs and prayers |
Patti, I think the Thundershirt is worth a try - after you and your vet rule out pain, etc. I understand the shirt is easily returnable if it doesn't work so there's no risk in at least trying it. Sending prayers that you can find answers for Pixie soon. |
Prayers for pixie ! |
I just wrote a long post and then somehow deleted it. Heres a short version. Pixie settled down with the metacam last night. This morning she is back to panting and running for back door like she has to go out but doesn't go out. She has peed twice within a short time but may be because I tried to get a urine sample. Didn't work. I have a vet appt at 3:15 but neither of her regular vets are in this afternoon so I get first available. Please keep Pixie in your prayers. Thanks |
Maybe she has a UTI? That would explain it....running for the door thinking she has to go out. You could get a urine sample, but when I think there is a UTI I usually let the vet get a sterile sample. Poor little Pixie...hope you find out what's up when you go this afternoon. |

I hope you find out this afternoon what is wrong. It just breaks your heart to see your baby being this upset. Hugs and prayers for Pixie to be better. |
Poor Pixie! Keeping her in my thoughts. I swear, some of us need something like a frequent flyer discount card for our dogs dr. appointments. Hopefully it's no big deal, Patti. |
Thanks. I am thinking UTI too. The vet's office said if I could get a sample I could just bring it in and she wouldn't need to be seen if it was a UTI. But Pixie only goes outside and she is so low to the ground that every time I try and sneak something under her she stops. I hope the vet can come up with something as she is so stressed out. I am switching their food back to California Natural since Cali had a UTI since being on the Nutro Ultra weight management. Now if Pixie does too I don't want to take any chances. The lady at the store where I picked up the CN said it is PH balanced and that is important for their kidneys. I am not sure if Ultra is. Pixie is just whining for me to let her out non stop. I am going to go to the vets early and sit there hoping they get us in sooner. I have spent so much there I should have VIP privileges. lol Please keep her in your prayers. I feel so bad for her, I just want to know what it is and get her treated. |
They can get a sample with a syringe if need be. It is a simple thing to do. :) Plus, it is a sterile one. |
Poor Pixie! Sending best wishes that this mystery can be solved soon. |
Hope Pixie is feeling better. Sending get well hugs and prayers. |
Just got back from the vet. She checked Pixie out and expressed her anal glands and took a sterile sample of urine. Anal glands were fine, no temperature, exam didn't reveal any tenderness. Urine didn't show a blatant infection but there was enough things in it that they put her on an antibiotic since it could be the start of an infection. She had a few white cells, some hemoglobin and her PH was off. Hopefully we caught it early and the antibiotics will help. Thanks for all the responses and well wishes. I am hoping she will be able to get comfortable now and relax. The vet said I can give her medacam tonight if she seems uncomfortable. |
I bet once the antibiotics take effect she will be better! That really may have been what was bothering her. Hope she has a good night! :) |
I hope antibiotics fix the problems. All in all, sounds like good news. Hope Pixie is back to her self in no time. |
