I'm so scared!!! I don't know what to do! Hi everyone. My yorkie is 4 years old, very small about 3lbs. For about 3 days he started having loose runny stools I suspected from changing his diet. Well I tried home remedies such as pumpkin, gaterade, and fasting him for 24 hours, but when I noticed mucous and a faint amount of blood in his stools I took him to the vet. The vet told me they gave him some Medicine while there (not sure because they wouldn't let me go in with Kobe which I didn't appreciate. I can't see whats being done to my dog?!). She then gave me prescriptions for Metronidazole 62.5mg and this powder probiotic I have to sprinkle on his food. I asked her since they gave him medication if I should give him medicine at home tonight and she stated yes. I fed him with the probiotic and he was fine. I gave him the metronidazole around 8pm tonight and he was fine. About twenty minutes ago I heard papers moving and for a second thought he was running around playing. I called him to come to bed but when he didnt I KNEW something was wrong. I look up and Kobe is stiff and thrashing around! I panicked so I picked him up, then put him down to make sure I didn't hurt him. It went on for at least a minute and as he was stiff I noticed he was pooping. Once he stopped thrashing he seemed limped and seemed dizzy and couldn't walk or stand straight! I went straight online and see the medicine can cause seizures! I'm so upset! He clearly had an overdose! But I was following the vets instructions! I don't know what to do! I just moved and paid summer tuition so I'm wiped out until I get paid. I'm so scared right now and I feel like the worst mommy in the world! He's never had seizures before and I don't know what to do. I want to throw this medicine out the window at this point! Any advice? I'm so scared, I will be up all night watching him. Sorry for the typos, I can't even think straight right now! |
Sure sounds like a seizure to me. Toss that med! Or don't give him anymore!! I would stick with trying the rice & boiled chicken, small amounts maybe 4 times a day. Also the stuff you sprinkle on the food will work wonders. The tiny bit of blood in the stool isn't that much of a red flag as some lead ya to believe. If he was have some tummy problems and runny poo he was probably just a bit irritated. I would still notify the vet about the seizure and ask for advice over the phone. Make sure he is still peeing too, getting plenty of fluids. |
Praying for you> I had a scare similar to this about a month ago. I thought my little 6 lb Sassy was having a seizure because she was jerking and kicking violently, i jerked her off the floor, thought she had died she was so weak, but instead she was choking on her food. I started the doggy heimlich maneuver and prayed. Thank God she is ok. I would call the vet and explain to him what happened. |
It may not have been from the Metro at all. The vet needs to know what is happening. If your pup has another seizure in the near future, it is an emergency because they can start clustering together. Your pup has to go back to the vet. |
62.5 mg seems like an awful high dose. I would call and confirm the dose with the vet. Something is not right.... Prayers for the little man |
I am so sorry to hear that you and your sweet boy are going through this. I would definitely call the vet and let them know what happened. Sending prayers for you and your little boy. |
It appears to be within the normal dosing guidelines, although if it was a reaction, the vet may want to do blood work and start an IV. |
Please call the vet, they will help you. Don't fool around waiting to see if it happens again, something is not right and it could be a very easy fix. |
I agree, the dose is appropriate, but some dogs do not tolerate Metronidazole. I wouldn't give him anymore until speaking to the vet, and she may want to see him again. You may be able to exchange the meds to save some $$. |

OP you need to contact your vet! |
Have you been able to reach your vet? Please keep us updated. |
Hi everyone thank you so much for the responses.please bear with me, my Internet is not up and running yet so I'm using my iPhone, hence no paragraphs for example! I called the vet to bring him in but they told me it wasnt necessary and to give him the medicine every other day, but I'm honestly not sure if I want to give him the medicine at all. But honestly they seemed really relaxed about the situation, which irritated me some because I felt as if I was overreacting which I wasn't! I took him to the humane society but theg don't accept walk ins, so I made an appointment for Thursday. I really don't want to wait, but I'm new to this area so right now I'm googling and calling other vet hospitals. He seems okay today, which I know, doesn't mean anything, but it feels good to see him running and playing around. I'm still watching him like a hawk though. I emailed my professors and told them I'm missing a few classes and I also took off work; hopefully I don't get fired, I just started! But Kobe is basically my baby and he comes first! I also was able to get in touch with my mother who transferred some money to my account to take him to he hospital. He doesn't seem interested in eating so far today, so I'm thinking about going to get him some chicken, rice and a few other yummy things. Today has been awful though thus far. I didn't sleep at all last night and today I've been super stressed and on edge. You all are great though! It feels good to find a community of those who love their babies just as much as I do! It's a whole 'nother thread but I hung up in my friends face earlier. She called when I was crying about the humane society not seeing him until Thursday and remarked "um it's just a dog. It's not that serious." grrrrrrr! |
Hmmm I wrote an update, I wonder why it's not posted... |
I hope you can get him in t another vet. I would never tell someone to go against their vets advice but if it were me I would not give him the medicine until I saw another vet. I am glad your mom is helping. I will keep him in my prayers. |

When you called, did the person you spoke with put you on hold and talk with the vet or did he/she just sputter that nonsense about taking the med every other day?? Does the vet know that your pup may have had a seizure? If he/she did not speak with the vet and was giving your their advice then I would call back and ask to speak with the vet...no one else...the vet! |
I would take him to another vet. Especially since he is not eating. |

Dogs don't just have seizures for the heck of it. There is a cause and you need a vet to diagnose and treat your dog. If a vet's front desk staff told you it was not necessary to bring in your dog, you need to let the vet know that. Front desk staff are not qualified to determine if your dog needs to be seen or not. And any vet allowing his/her staff to do this is not one I'd take my dog to. Please get this dog back to a vet before you have more seizures on your hands and a possible severe situation. |
[QUOTE=ladyjane;3545590]When you called, did the person you spoke with put you on hold and talk with the vet or did he/she just sputter that nonsense about taking the med every other day?? Does the vet know that your pup may have had a seizure?:thumbup: If your pup seized from Metro, the drug needs to be stopped and the dog needs to be assessed by a licensed veterinarian. If the seizure was caused by something else, then the dog needs to be examined by a licensed veterinarian. And we don't even have absolutely certainly that it was a seizure by the description. Unfortunately, even amazing vets can have terrible office staff and they may not know what is going on up front. It's impossible to monitor everything their front desk staff is doing. And if this was a tech, well, they aren't qualified to give this kind of advice. And if it was a tech relaying the info to a vet, I've seen that get mixed up or whatever a time or two or three... You and the vet need to talk if you haven't already. If the vet gave you the above advice, then it's time to find a new one quickly. |
Definitely agree with the other posters if the staff gave you the advice speak with the vet and if the vet did not have you bring in the dog asap for an evaluation after the episode look for a new vet. Hopefully you go go to one the of the vets that Cathy from Riverside provided. Best wishes to you and your baby. |

Thanks for the advice everyone! It's a long drive but I'm going to Lakewood tomorrow to see another vet. He told me he could see me tomorrow and even told me what things to look for before I get there. He told me tonight to give him some chicken and rice with the probiotic for dinner which I did and Kobe loved it! Yay! He also told me to give him a little bit of nutrical or honey to make sure his blood sugars aren't low so I did that as well. He also advised to not give any more of the pills until he evaluates Kobe because he doesnt want to risk anything else happening; just in case those pills were the cause. HE said that he's not sure yet, but from I told him, it sounds like Kobe did have an overdose. He doesn't understand that if the doctor already gave Kobe antibiotics and the metro already, why he needed an extra dosage four hours later. But we will be certain tomorrow what's going on once the vet examines him. He sounds like an amazing doctor and I appreciate the fact that I have never seen him before yet he took the time to speak to me and answer all questions and concerns I had, unlike the vet I saw but never returned my call. I will keep you all updated and let you know what happens tomorrow! Wish Kobe good luck! :p |
Please update us tomorrow after you see the vet. I'm glad he ate tonight. Good luck tomorrow. |
Hello everyone! Sorry about the late update, but since Kobe had his seizure, today was the first time I actually slept! At the docs today, Kobe was given tests on his blood, stool, and liver. The doctor said that he definately had an overdose and td me to not give him any metro. He talked about the importance of diet and to switch foods very gradually. He told me once again to keep giving him the probiotic with his food and his stool has actually since began to form; it's still soft but not runny with mucous. He also told me that metro is a great medicine to help with runny stools and cordecia (sp?) but he doesn't want to risk anything because of Kobes size. He also shaved Kobes bum for me and put a cream there since he was a little irritated back there. But Kobe is doing so much better! He's eating like a pig, as usual, and hes playing a lot. The doctor also warned me that small dogs can have seizures and to just always have that in mind and be prepared at all times, meaning for example knowing where the nearest emergency vet is. He scolded me a lite for that, but it wasn't offensive at all; he was genuinely nice and was just concerned and caring. In all the doctor was great! And thank you all again for your help and concern! |
So glad to hear Kobe's doing better! It sounds like you got him to a very caring vet! |
Happy to hear that Kobe is doing better and that you now have a vet you are happy with! :) |
