after 6 l/2 hours he is ok again. I am at my wits end...my very small yorkie, refuses to eat...consequently his blood sugars go low. I've been giving him nutrical, to help with that. Today he decided he isn't eating anything... kibble or otherwise.... Yesterday he had some kind of a 7 hour episode... scurring to a spot on the floor then plopping down... five seconds later same thing...over and over and over.. hovering up against the wall.....disoriented.... I think I know what it sounds like but if the little guy is refusing food...I need to work fast. I am just sick over this......it would sure help if I was to hear something encouraging..... |
I'm sorry to hear your having problems with your little Yorkie. I'm no expert but maybe if you could give a little more information about your Yorkie someone will jump in. Maybe the pup's age and history? I know how upsetting it is when you have a sick baby or they refuse to eat when they are so tiny! I'll keep you in my thoughts for a resolution. Hugs |
he is 10 months old, and 3.1 pounds..... he has never been a great eater... although lately.....there is nothing that even tempts him :( tomorrow I am going back to my vet to see what he thinks.....he does seem bright this morning... not sure how he can be....with so little food in that tiny body.......:( |
Seven hours of restlessness and disorientation? What is the vet saying? Hypoglycemia is only one thing that needs to be ruled out here. |
I have been giving him nutri cal, and pedialyte, as there is no doubt ...he would be low blood sugar... My vet feels they need to do a test this week I am going to try and get hold of him tomorrow. FOr time being... I have changed his food to low protein, to see if I notice a diff. |
I agree. If he isn't eating, it is going to go low. If it was just hypoglycemia, Nutrical should cause a big improvement within a few minutes of giving it. Liver and neuro issues sound much more likely. I would try to suggest things to feed just until he sees the vet tomorrow, but it sounds like you've tried everything. Your vet may be talking about a bile acids test to check his liver function. If something is wrong in this area, he may not be eating because food makes these dogs feel sick. |
I would definitely have this baby's BAT done to check his liver....I know how strssful having a sick baby can be. Good luck! |
How often do you give the Nutrical? I personaly have low blood sugar episodes and, when it's absolutely neccessary, I will use something sweet to raise them but I feel much better if I eat something with protein. I can't imagine eating something sweet everytime my sugar level drops only to have that wear off and it drop again... My vet recommended using baby food (mushed chicken or beef) for our little ones when travelling. He said Nutrical raises the blood sugar up high, which is good when that is needed, but then it drops the blood sugar again...causing the problem you are trying to avoid and it can just make the problem worse if it's given again and again. You might want to talk with your vet about the baby food...no, it's not the 'ideal' diet...but it might help until you can get this under control. Have you had the liver checked? I read your other post about your baby spitting out the food you were putting in his mouth. Have you tried home cooking? I use chicken breast and vegetables for mine and they have never once turned it down. It's an easy recipe done in the crock pot or on the stove...I'd be glad to share it with you if you want to give it a try. Good luck...I hope you find some answers and a solution to this problem and that your baby will be fine. |

When a puppy (or dog) loses their appetite - that is another reason to see the vet immediately. |
I agree with the bile acid testing. Lucy has had several and they are relatively inexpensive. Lack of appetite is one sign of liver issues. I will say that Lucy had an 'episode' when she was a puppy that intially started out as gas. She would run somewhere; flop down; could not get comfortable; run somewhere else; flop down . . . etc. She had gas. The vet said that sometimes puppies run away from it because it hurts their tummy; they don't understand what it is and are just trying to get away from it. My son still laughs that Lucy had to go to the vet because she didn't know how to 'fart'. However, she also has liver issues and we found out by requesting a bile acid test right after this episode. |
I agree with the bile acid test as well. I'm afraid for your baby. For what it's worth my vet does the bile acid test for my breeding dogs and it was about $80 so not that terribly expensive. Good luck and please keep us posted. In the meantime, have you tried chicken breast and brown rice? WHATEVER you can get him to eat at this time is important even if it's not the most balanced. |
thank you so much......each and every one.. I am afraid I agree with you all....I've been researching and talking to vet....I am taking him for bile acid test tomorrow... The poor little guy won't eat a thing and he is starting to turn his head when he see's me coming with yet again, another syringe. I have been giving him pedialyte....and mothers milk, called esbilac....which I mix and squirt on his tongue. He seems to be tolerating this mixture. earlier I did get about a teaspoon of low protein wet food down, and it came back up soon after. Due to the situation......I have to resort to nutri cal more than I would....however am trying to wait, until I see signs of him going low.... TOday I had to raise my voice when he was sleeping.. he was sleeping too deeply... THis HAS to be tested tomorrow.....we need to move fast......I am so terribly upset, and very sleep deprived.... Thanks again....as usual you guys have come through... I am so worried about the future....his AND mine. Please Pray for us:) thanks again Abbie |
unfortunately I have to agree with getting the BAT done. That's the first thing I thought of when I read he was disorientated and hovering against the walls... |
I can't offer anything advice wise but am keeping your baby and you in my prayers. I sure hope your vet can find out what is wrong and get him some help quick. |
Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. |
Good Morning Good People Griffin has not improved, and I am waiting for the bile acid test this morning. He has been hospitalized and on I.V. Fluids, with Lactulose...or Lactose, can't remember I am so upset. My vet said, the Lactulose can bind to proteins and with low protein diets he may do well. Has anyone used this Lactulose? I am on four days with little to no sleep and very emotional.... Wouldn't you know, it would be the one dog after all these years...that I would have such a strong bond with , that would be sick...... As much as I love my little guy...I need to do what is best for him. Any and all suggestions I value from this group. Thank you Abbie506 |
I am praying for you and Griffin. I hope the vet can find out why he isn't eating and is able to help him. You must be so terrified, and my heart goes out to you. |
Please let us know his BAT numbers when you get them. Prayers for your little boy. Lots of dogs with liver issues use lactulose, along with a low-protein diet. Please know - that liver shunt or other liver issues does NOT mean a death sentence. There are lots of yorkies on here with liver problems ranging from mild to severe. Some required surgery; some are able to be managed with low protein diet; lactulose, etc. So please hang in there and don't give up. |
Thinking of you both today and hoping you get some answers from the vet. Wishing the best for you and that it's nothing major |
I am hoping you get good news on the Bile Acid test. AS others mentioned they can live a good life with treatment for liver shunt and MVD. |

Yes, low protein diet (RC Heaptic LS 14) is a good choice. Lactulose is great too! He may need to be on it daily and perhaps with a low dose of antib's as well. Feeding 5 to 6 small meals a day (spread out) and lots of water help to control the HE episodes. If he refuses to eat, Children's Vanilla Pedisure w/fiber helps to maintain them until they start to feel better and want to eat the kibble. Please keep us posted! ;) |
Griffin Update ok yorkie brother and sisters.....here's the latest. GRiffin was admitted early this morning after his BAT was normal. (*whew) although.....I asked if he could be hypoglycemic...and the vet said....she was going to try him on dextrose in the subcutanious fluids. So far, he is doing well....no signs of seizures....perked up alot....was acting like a rottweiler with other dogs etc. Here the thing......she is wondering if there is an underlying cause for the hypoglycemia....or if in fact he is just not eating enough to maintain is glucose level. The mystery to me.....is....he is refusing food... why would he refuse food? Now today at the hospital, they hand fed him and he did eat.....which is new since this started Saturday. any thoughts and imput .....please feel free! you guys are incredible.....seriously. THEE best ~!! |
When I got Cali she had several hypoglycemic episodes. She was a terrible eater. I had to try and get her to eat ever few hours. I tried everything. The one thing she would eat was Ceasar's canned food, which is junk food but I had to get her to eat. Her Bile Acid test results showed a very mild MVD (tiny internal shunt) but it was so mild the vet didn't put her on any special meds or diet. She was having episodes until she was over 8 months old. She grew out of it and became a little chow hound. I hope that your baby will grow out of it and you can find a food he will eat regularly. |
ohhh Patti, I am so hopeful after reading your post.... I pray that I can get this little guy to eat more... its such a chore to get anything into that little body. and she did grow out of it? did she put on weight? what was her weight and age when you got her? my little guy was 10 months old at 3 pounds. thank you again !!! |
Sending prayers for you and your little guy. I hope you find the cause for his episodes. Buster was such a finicky eater when he was a pup I must have tried over 20 different kinds of foods to get him to eat. I spent so much time trying to get him to eat in the beginning I was so excited he was finally eating I did not notice that I soon had a Porkie instead of a Yorkie. I wish you all the best in finding the food he likes and hope it is no more than another finicky Yorkie. Are there any treats he especially likes that you could try crumbling on his food? I hope you find a solution and are able to get some rest for yourself. It is so scary when these little ones are sick and we feel so helpless. Best wishes. |
Hi, My little Jack is 4 yrs old and weighs 3 lbs. He was always a terrible eater and we probably spent about $4000.00 in vet bills in the last 4 yrs. The best thing we did was getting a ragdoll kitten, the cat is about the only thing that will get Jack to eat,he has no interest in his food unless the cat is near. He'll chase the cat away and then eat,it's the greatest! |
that is so interesting....a ragdoll kitten..... do you think having two other yorkies here would kinda serve the same purpose at the kitty.? just a thought. |
When I got Cali I had a pom and that didn't seem to make a difference. When I got Pixie then game on. Now all 4 are little piggies. |
not sure, ragdolls are known for being very laid back and he lets Jack be in charge. Mojo (the cat) doesn't eat Jacks food but it seems that whenever he comes around Jack's food, Jack jumps up and eats as if to say "I'm the boss and I eat first!" It's pretty cute especially since ragdolls are muscular and he weighs 25lbs to Jack's 3lbs.lol |
when was the BAT done? did he have to fast 12 hours before hand? What was his pre and post? |
