Gave too much Pepto to Paris!! HELP I think I gave too much Pepto to Paris. I gave him a tablet crushed in some food and he ate it all. He has been eating leaves and throwing up since last night. Now he is asleep. It has only been a few minutes should I induce vomiting oe wait? Help! |
I would induce vomiting. I would rather take it back than not. |
What do I give to induce? He is 13 lbs not your tiny Yorkie. |
I just copied this from the web .... If you think your pet has been poisoned... Contact your veterinarian or one of the Animal Poison Hotlines (listed below) if you think your pet may have accidentally received or been given an overdose of the medication. **ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center 1-888-4ANI-HELP (1-888-426-4435). $65.00 per case, billed to caller's credit card. Follow-up calls can be made for no additional charge by dialing 888-299-2973. There is no charge when the call involves a product covered by the Animal Product Safety Service. **Pet Poison Helpline - 24-hour service available throughout North America for pet owners and veterinary professionals who require assistance with treating a potentially poisoned pet. 1-800-213-6680 ($35.00 per incident). Staffed 24-hours a day. |
I would use 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide (regular 3% hydrogen peroxide)- to the back of the mouth and make sure it is swallowed. If no vomiting in 10 mins you can do it again ONE TIME. You can also call the ASPCA pet poison control to see if this is even necessary. There is a $65 charge for the call. Their # is (888) 426-4435. |
I copied that from a google search on pepto... I know my vet said I could give it to my dogs... but the dosage is the question |
Thanks. |
I shot 1/2 teaspoon of hp into the back of his throat. Now waiting. Conflicting dosages were googled so I did 1/2 tsp. |

Called emergency vet and they said it wouldn't be a problem the dosage I gave him. So just going to skip dinner to let his tummy rest and call my vet in the morning. whew. |
Glad you called. I just read that the dosage is 1/4 tablet for every 20 pounds. Hmmm... |
Now the emergency vet said it has aspirin and should NEVER be given to a dog. Who do you believe? Paris seems to be just fine. I am watching him closley and making him drink alot of water. He hasn't thrown up since I gave him the pepto. |

Yes the technician called back and said it has aspirin in it and maybe I should bring him in. I didn't think it had aspirin but who wants to argue with a doctor? I have given it to him before just not as much. He really seems fine right now and it has been over 2 hours. |

Pepto will make poop black so don't get scared if Paris' poop turns black. Hope all is OK. |

Bismuth Subsalicylate (Pepto Bismol) in Dogs good luck!!! |
There is no aspirin listed under inactive or active ingredients. She must have been wrong. Not much of a confidence builder. |
Pepto Bismol tablets contain Salicylate which is a component of aspirin. Other Information Each tablet contains: sodium less than 1 mg Salicylate 102 mg Pepto-Bismol Chewable Tablets - Relieve Heartburn Aspirin, in small dosages is sometimes given to dogs for it's anti-inflammatory effects. |
Yes I have given Paris a baby aspirin per vet instructions for pain before. |

Did you take Paris in? I called the ER vet one night and they gave me guidance over the phone to induce vommiting. If the first dose didn't work, she told us to give one more dose. If no vomit, she wanted me to bring the girls in. I hope Paris is okay. For others who may read, I would only induce vommiting at the advice of your vet or ER vet. There are times when you do not want to induce vommiting. |

Having hydrogen peroxide on hand, however, can save your dog's life. Last year, a friend's 3 lb dog swallowed a garden mum and I said take back the flower and call the vet right after. She threw up the whole flower, intact. It was a fast move that could have saved her life. There is more info on pet first aid here ASPCA | Animal Poison Control FAQ |
I agree vomiting should be induced just to be on the safe side, but there's definatly no asprin in Pepto-bismol |
He was fine. He threw up once during the night, foamy white and clear stuff. Going to our vet at 4:20. Still playing and eating and drinking as normal. No poop today though. |

Vet said we are treating it like a mild case of pancreaitis. Pepcid ac 1/4 tab 1 x a day and Metronidazole (stool hardener) 2 x's a day. No food tonight, sips of water not bowl fulls. Boiled chicken the next couple of days increasing in portions from 1 meatball sized portion in the morning to 2 meatball sized portions tomorrow night. He said the pepto was ok but preferrs the pepcid ac. He said Paris's heart murmur was a high 3 but he would call it a 4. not good news there. Thanks to all who helped me get through this emergency. |
