Zoey Grace has a collapsed trachea [COLOR="Purple"]Our 3 year old yorkie Zoey Grace was diagnosed with a collapsed trachea. She was honking bad for a few days, and after many trips to the er, she has finally calmed down. No honking for 2 days now. They have her on Hydrocodone, Prednisone and Doxycycline. If the meds don't work, she may have to have a stint put in. We will have to go to Knoxville, Tennessee for the procedure. Also the doctor said where she had her neck fused together (she was born with a detached neck) two of her pins are broken and one is sticking out. He looked at the xrays and said the pins are not why her trachea is collapsed. But that the pins could become an issue later. We wonder how much do you put these little ones through? We will do anything to keep her around, but is it in her best interest? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!!! |
I am keeping you and Zoey Grace in my prayers for successful treatment. Wishing you all the very best! |
So sorry to hear what happened. I hope she is better soon. |
I am so sorry to hear about Zoey Grace. I had a yorkie Gracie that I lost at 6 1/2 due to a collapsed trachea and where hers was and 20 years ago, surgery wasn't an option. She did well on meds for over a year until it all took it's toll on her heart and lungs. She let me know when enough was enough. I will keep Zoey in my prayers. |
Prayers for you and your baby...have faith!! |

Zoey................ Bless her heart. That brings tears to my eyes. My Abby is only 3 years old too. I don't know I'd do if I had something like that happen to her:confused:. God bless you and your little girl, I pray she will get better. We'll be thinking of you, Momma to Penny:aimeeyork and Abby. |
Im so sorry to hear about Zoey :( Im going through the same thing with my little girl molly, surgery is not a option for her :( Ive learned on my own along the way in dealing with her, things that help make her more comfortable, I keep her cut very short as it seems to help her breathing. this is a awful awful diease and i wish they could find a better cure. she loves to play and i let her but i limit her, even walking is hard, also her weight is a factor so ive restricted her treat intake. I will be praying for your little one :heart to molly will be 4 this yr. |
I'm so sorry she has been so sick. I'm sending my prayers for Zoey Grace. Only you and her doctors can make the decision for her quality of life. She may do very well and I really hope she does.:) |
I lost my little one, Gracie, to collapsed trachea that couldn't be helped by surgery. She was only 9.5 years old, but she was so full of life during her lifetime. The best thing I could do for her was to try to get her to stop getting too excited. Once her breathing got difficult for her, I had to cool her body off quickly--by using a spray bottle of water, carrying ice with me at all times, or bringing her body temperature down in a sink of cool water. Once her body temperature came down, her breathing would go back to normal. Gracie was the most loving, happiest, and playful little girl. As much as I worried about Gracie and needed to be very careful and proactive with her, I fortunately never had to question the quality of her life. I always had hope, and it's one thing I wish for you. My prayers are with you and Zoey, and I also hope that her health improves. |
sorry, double post. |
I am so sorry to hear about Zoey Grace. My prayers go out to her. There are a lot of yt members who have gone through what you are going through, so you will be able to get a lot of help here. I'm so sorry. |
I too lost my 12 yr old Little Spark of Fire (Sparky) 10 years ago. Just a thought, make sure you know what your vet is doing to your little one. Sparky had a bad attack and threw up a huge pile of jello like mucus. Rushed him to the vet where they put a tube down his trachea to help him breathe. The tube was too big for this little 4 pounder and they ruptured his trachea. The vet was closing so they told me to take him to er. He died in my arms on the way there. Be careful. It's your right to see what they are doing to your baby. I think of him every day. My heartfelt prayers go out to you and Zoey. I hope everthing comes out ok:aimeeyork |
Thank you all so much for your thoughts and prayers. It is a tough decision to make about Zoey. My husband and I both think that if we do have the surgery done on her,we would have done everything possible for her that could be done. We just worry about the trip. She honks bad in a car ride. Don't know if she would survive a 4 hour car trip without being sedated. And not sure thats a good idea. |
Prayers for Wisdom in your decision making, and peace and recovery for your little pup! |
I had a little one with CT. Surgery was never an option for her, so we did not have to weight such a decision. My heart goes out to you. I pray for wisdom for you - its obvious you love this dog dearly. |
I will say prayers for Zoey Grace. I also need to make the decision whether or not to go through with stent surgery on my dog. It's such a difficult decision. The specialist that does the surgery is only about a half hour away from us in NYC. She said the surgery can be very successful but there are risks. The stents usually last about 2 years before having some type of complication. This is what is making my decision so difficult. Did you try an antibiotic? For some reason, that is what seems to helping Hershey. I would try different meds and maybe weight loss if Zoey Grace is over weight. If that doesn't work then surgery might be the best way to go. I have spent hours researching this and spoke to many vets and specialists. I am also thinking about bringing him to a holistic vet. Please keep us updated--I wish you and Zoey Grace the best. |
Thinking of you and Grace. My foster dog Cupid had the stent put in...medications were not working for him and he had a complete trachea collaspe and was not able to breathe even while resting. Stenting him was my only other option besides putting him to sleep...he was not even 1 years old at the time so we opted for the stent. While he is still not perfect, he still coughs at times, he is able to enjoy life. He goes for walks every day and plays with his foster brothers every day too. Cupid also had severe pneumonia which has caused him to have lung damage which is also some of the cause with his breathing issues.... Only you can make the decision about that to do, but if I had to make the decision all over again I would still go ahead and stent Cupid. However, this decision was only made after we had tried numerious medications on him to no avail.... |
Thinking and praying for you. I lost my previous Yorkie 2 years ago after doing everything I could possibly do. The one thing I learned is that no one knows their baby better than you and you will do what you feel is best when the time comes. The decision will be made with love and it will be the right one. Blessings!! |
Will keep Zoey Grace in my thoughts. I feel that whatever you decide to do it will come from your heart and it will be the right thing. I am just so sorry this has happened to Zoey Grace. |
