I am glad to hear you found a compassionate and professional vet for your sweet Doodle. Luckily you knew things were not right and went to another vet. I hope you are able to find out the underlying issues and be able to treat them and that your Doddle is up about bouncing around again soon. Best wishes.

Update on Doodle

Sorry i havent been on here earlier as today has been a very crazy day for me with not sleeping so much lastnight and then work today... Ugh luckily i work in a place where i work 2nd shift and can bring my little doodle with me to work lol But i called lastnight to get an update and they said as soon as we left he started moving around!!! Little rugrat that he is i think he is trying to give his moms a heart attack lol But they said he was moving around a little lastnight and more active once they got the iv fluids and the sugar water iv in him but they said he was a little better... Then this morning we both get calls about him, he is doing muchhhh better his sugar level is up to normal, he is eating and drinking on his own!!!! They were going to take the sugar water iv out and keep him overnight one more night to make sure his sugar level didnt drop again but i am so thankful that he is doing better and they said he is active now and everything!!! I just dont understand what i was doing wrong, I now feel like im a bad mommy because i couldnt keep his sugar levels up and keep him healthy... Or could this possibly have something to do with the Coccidia that brought his sugar levels way down?? I kept such a good eye on him and dilligently fed him food and his kayro syrup water every 3 hours as directed... I guess i am just rambling on im just starting to doubt myself now and feel like im not such a good mama like i thought i was =( but i guess i will try to see what the vet says and reccomends to keep his sugar level stabalized.. I dont let him play with his big sister (ryleigh) for long they play for about 15 minutes to a half hour then they are done its naptime for both of them... He wears her out most of the time and she is pretty young and active little shih tzu its quite amuzing actually... I will keep everyone updated when i find out more, they are hoping for him to come home tomorrow at some point.... I miss my little guy =( Thanks again everyone for your continued thoughts, prayers and concern <3

Oh, thank you for the update. We YT'ers get so invested in these little babies that you just worry about them sometimes just like you know them. I've been praying and thinking of Doodle since first read your thread. Hate to hear a baby is down.

I know you feel better knowing his BS is back up and probably other levels as well. I guess so much stress and fluid loss from the disease drives BS down but your vet will likely explain it all and send you home with a schedule for giving adequate supplement to keep it stabilized and teach you all the signs to look for, what to do just in case there is another down spike.

Thanks for the update - know you are exhausted and strung out but so sweet of you to let us know - still, we'll be here praying even when you are too busy and tired to check in so don't stress over posting all the time. <3

Coccidia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I copied some info from the internet on coccidia for you. You might want to let the breeder know your little one got so sick. Hope things continue to go well with your little one! They are such cuties, especially when such little furballs!

My heart goes out to both of you mommies....it really is so hard when they are away, but thank God you took action and got him help! Can't wait to hearth next good update! Take care....

I have let the breeder know, she seemed extremely concerned the first day but i havent heard from her since, she hasnt called or anything!!! Which is crazy to me!!! I am not sure how you can just "sell" a baby and then just let him be out of sight out of mind... She claimed that she wasnt a "breeder" persay, he didnt even have papers or anything which was fine with me because he was originally supposed to be for my mom and dad because they loved ryleigh so much and they are both retired and have the time to devote to a puppy... But she couldnt get him potty trained and thats when i took him for a "couple of days" lol and now i cant give him back lol and they are ok being grandparents to him and my other furbaby ryleigh lol thank goodness!!! But they say that they get coccidia from their mothers fecies because the mother has the immunities built up to guard against it and the babies get it when their exposed to the fecies... I have heard people say that he didnt neccisarily come from a bad breeder persay but i think he should have atleast been checked out and she would have known!!!! But like i said im just thankful that he came home with us and he is doing better, because who knows if he would have went with anyone else or stayed with her he might not have made it.... He is so adorable i cant even imagine my life without him in it and its amazing he has only been with us a couple of weeks lol.... Its amazing how these babies touch our hearts so fast!!!

You weren't doing anything wrong. The diarrhea associated with Coccidia plays havoc on the system. It sounds like what was happening was that you were battling something called "rebound hypoglycemia". Basically, what happens is that the blood sugar drops so you treat it. But once the sugar goes in, the pancreas reacts by producing more insulin (to deal with the sugar in the blood stream) and the blood levels drop again. It can be a really vicious circle and hard to control without continuous monitoring.

One way to avoid repeat episodes of rebound hypoglycemia is to follow up the sugar supplement with an easily digestible protein, such as boiled skinless chicken breast. That helps keep the sugar levels more stable.

You truly were in a no win situation with your little guy. Food was probably making his diarrhea worse, which made him more prone to developing the hypoglycemia in the first place.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with the first ER vet. Like everyone else, some are better than others. I'm glad you didn't give up and you found someone who was willing to work with you to get your little guy treated. One thing you might want to consider doing (in case of future emergencies) is applying for a line of Care Credit which most vets will take. It will let you get treatment and spread your payments out over a year.

Keep us updated on how your baby is doing.

That really makes sense!!! Thank you so much!!! Its so touch and go with that bs thing, i myself am diabetic so i understand things about it but his seems like it is so severe... And it just wasnt coming up... He had a bm yesterday am at 9a and it was solid that was when he seemed like he was feeling better, then he didnt have a bm or pee all the rest of the day despite syringe feeding him food n water... I hope this was just an episode that he is going thru my heart cant take much more lol I was feeding him boiled chicken breast and rice as per the first vet but he just got to the point where he wanted to stop eating period... I think we are just going to switch vets to this new place all together, they are extremely nice and caring and compassionate, they are pretty informative and i like the thought of them being open 24-7 in case of any emergencies which may arise in the future and they will already have all their records and our critters will already be familiar with them and vice versa... Ive never had a sick puppy of course Ryleigh was my first one ever luckily she was healthy and now she is a spoiled rotten princess who is ready for her brother to come home as is the rest of us!!!

That's wonderful news!

Don't beat yourself up, you did everything you could and you didn't stop until he got the help that he needed. When they are as tiny as yours is, it is EXTREMELY difficult to stabilize them when they are dehydrated and hypoglycemic, I doubt than any of us here could do that ourselves at home. He really needed to be hospitalized to do that.

IMO,the only person that did anything wrong was the vet that sent you home when the pup was in that condition. They should have NEVER sent him home with you.

Mardelin 04-12-2011 02:47 PM

I'm so glad that your pup is doing better and you've followed your heart and gut.

There are breeders that have not fully educated themselves with every possible situation. Coccidia being one that is overlooked. While a pup can be perfectly healthy while with their mother. The mother may be a carrier and transferred it to the pup. All is well with a pup while with mom, no stressful situation, no abrupt changes in food or enviornment. An underaged and small pup being taken from it's mom and litter mates to a new enviornment puts a lot of stress on a pup's system. Some pups will refuse to eat for 24 hours in a new enviornment. Coccidia and hyperglycemia will manifest themselves in either situation. As mentioned by several posters; that is why a good breeder keeps their pups for a minimum of 12 weeks and weighing a minimum of two pounds, making sure that a happy, healthy, easy transition is made for the pup and new family.

Also, keep in mind until a few years ago vet's did misdiagnose hyperglycemia and treated incorrectly.....

AmandaY 04-12-2011 02:51 PM

Yeah i have heard that before that they really should keep them for 12 weeks... I didnt know that either, but really should have done my research as i did with ryleigh... But i guess it will be a learning process for us both lol and with the support of all of you and this wonderful forum we can get thru it!!! <3

AmandaY 04-12-2011 02:54 PM

Hmm i had posted a couple other posts prior to that one and it said that they would be posted when someone was available to approve them but yet i dont see them lol but please know that i have read and taken to heart every reply on here and thankful that you all have taken time out of your busy day to write me some kind words or advice that is desperately needed.... <3
