paws are burned? skin on paws are coming off?! so i have been noticing that my little furbaby's paws are getting pinker pinker and the dark protective part is coming off. and one of her toes are pink and it hurts her when i touch her! are there any dog products paw balms out there that will help repair her paws?!? and get her skin back?!? i feel so bad for her!! :( we have been going on a lot of walks together but i didnt think it was wear down her skin like that. i have been soaking her paws and wiping them down when we go into the house but i'm sure it hurts her to walk on..i feel so bad for her.. :( |
I'm sorry about your baby's paws. I think you might need to have your vet see her. I walked with my little girl a great deal, and she never had any problems. Her pads seemed fine. One day I let her pace for a few minutes (she was almost 17 and had dementia) on our brick patio. It was no longer than five minutes and I saw everything she did. The patio wasn't hot but the surface of the bricks are not smooth. Normal walking on the bricks never bothered her before. Her pads started to bleed, and I had to allow them to heal. I was very careful after that. You can try bag balm until you are able to see your vet. I don't know the surface you are walking on, but that could be the problem. Otherwise, I'd worry about what was causing it medically. I definitely would have bought Ashley boots or shoes had I known about them. They are also great if the road is hot. Below is a link to Karen's (AllDogBoots) site. She's a valued YT member, and I know she'd be very helpful. I hope her paws heal quickly. Dog Boots | Dog Shoes & Dog Booties |
I was going to suggest Bag Balm, too. I have used that stuff for everything such as dry skin, small cuts, chapped lips, diaper ointment, babies wind burned cheeks...I really think that would help as a temp. fix. :) |
If the skin is actually coming off then they may need to be treated & wrapped. I would say a vet visit is a must. |
I agree with the others that a vet check is in order and consult Karen at AllDogBoots. Bag Balm worked on Max's cracked paw pad last summer. Be careful not to do anything or put anything on the pads that will soften them (no lotions or oils, for instance). The pads were intended to be rough for protection. |
Could there have been a lot of street salt where you walked? She needs to be seen by your vet and treated properly. |

I'm sorry your baby is going through this. While I, too recommend Bag Balm I would first recommend taking your dog to the vet because antibiotics may be necessary before using other ointments. My Max has cracked, dry pads. I apply Bag Balm to his paws and then he wears socks so he doesn't lick it off. Is the burn from hot flooring, salt or something else? |
The color changes you describe together with the obvious discomfort would suggest to me that this is a veterinary problem. She could have some type of beginning infection from an occult puncture wound or spider bite or something. Are they very warm to the touch? |
I would get her to the ER vet ASAP, if her feet have absorbed some chemical they will need to stop the reaction... anything you put on her make make it worse if you don't know what's causing it. And I aggree, antibiotics will probably be needed to stop any secondary infections.... I also suggest using a stroller till she's healed, that way you give her feet a break, but mentally she's still going for walks and will be just as happy! |
i figured out what it was guys.......... bleach!!!!!!!! she walks around on my patio a great deal and my boyfriend used bleach to disinfect the area because she had giardia before and he totally didnt even tell me, her potty patch is on the patio... so it was definately the bleach, what would the vet be able to do? i bought some paw balm stuff off of amazon last night, i am just so mad at my boyfriend as he didnt even think of what bleach could do to her! do you think her skin will grow back?!!??!?! :( |

Bleach degrades to a salt compound when dry. If he used undiluted bleach and she walked on it while it was wet, maybe... she'll still need antibiotics to ward off any secondary infections... I've had undiluted bleach on my hands before and never had the skin peel off... I would think their feet are a bit tougher... plus you said you did wash her feet after coming inside... Also the bleach may have killed the natural bacteria on her feet leaving the area open to attack from other bacteria and germs.... I would want to be sure whatever process is causing this is stopped before too much of her pad is gone.... could possibly become very nasty... |

If it was the bleach, once you've rinsed it off, it should begin to heal. If it's getting worse, I'd have the vet take a look. If you're not sure, I'd want a vet to see it bc they can tell if the damage is actually a chemical burn or from something else. Also, it may need to be bandaged or not, the vet would have to see it and decide what is best. |

You keep asking exactly what the vet will do- the vet will actually see the area, something none of us can do, will diagnose the problem and provide treatment. I just don't understand, I have never let anything go more than a day that looked like it needed treatment before I saw and vet. |
Injuries to the pads on their paws can be very difficult to heal. Because they are continually walking on it; irritating it; and possibly getting infected. This is what happened to our Black Lab when I was young. The vet tried everything but it had gotten a deep infection and took months to heal. And that's with taping it up so he could only walk on three legs AND spending a couple of week's at the Vets while he tried to keep him off of it and gave him IV antiobiotics. So be very careful and I would take her to a vet to get it checked out while it's still a small area. |

If this is a chemical burn, it could be getting worse while you are sitting on the internet looking for solutions. You need to take your pup to a vet ASAP! I don't see how you could be offended by what megansmomma said. She simply is trying to help you see that this is not the way to vet a pup. She did not say you are a horrible pet owner. |
i got a major chemical burn a few years back with welts as big as a dollar bill & raised 1/2"...the pain was unbearable, i literally could not sleep or do anything. the doc had to prescribe something to calm it down and i had welts for months. please take your baby to the vet & get her an RX, it's got to be horrible walking on those poor paws even if they are wrapped. i hope she heals quickly. :) |
Because you do not know for sure what caused this, I would take her to the vet just to rule out something that needs treatment like a fungus. We had a spray on surface applied to our pool deck cement so it would not be slippery when wet for my grandkids. Unfortunately, the roughness was very hard on my pups' feet. Candy, our Jack Russell, had her paws actually peel like you described. I knew what caused it so did not take her to the vet. Instead I treated her first with burn cream as that is what I had on hand and then went to the store and bought Bag Balm and tiny newborn stretchy socks. They worked great! But Candy would not leave them on long. Still, a few hours on here and there helped the Bag Balm work and they healed in no time! I also made sure she stayed off the new pool deck surface until they were healed. She runs on it now without a problem, I guess she just had to toughen her paws up. It never did bother the other dogs but then they do not run near as much as Candy. You want to make sure the new under layer of skin is pink but NOT red and is completely intact with no openings to the under layer of "meat." Make sure there is no sign of infection -- redness or worse any pussy looking ooze. MAke sure the skin is not bleeding or leaking any clear liquid. Make sure she is not limping, or acting like she is in pain. If any of these are the case, a trip to the vet is a must and I would probably go anyway since you are unsure of the cause. Bag Balm is a great aid to any cracked, dry, burned or otherwise injured skin. Bag Balm Should be a permanent part of every pet owner's medical bag. If it is just from walking on a rough surface, it should heal quickly -- in just a few days the pinkish under layer of skin should toughen up and all be as new. I wll hope that is the case, as it is the least worrisome dx. Good luck! |

I would go to the vet and get some Furacin. Best stuff to use. |
Hi... I hope your baby is okay. Sounds sooooo painful. Please get her to a vet asap...they can examine her, give treatment and at home care recommendations, and prescribe something if needed for pain or infection. Those are all things that you can't do. I can tell you love your girl and it seems like you feel guilty this happened to her. The best thing you can do as her mommy is make sure she gets the care she needs. As someone told me...accidents happen...it's what you do after that shows what kind of pet owner you are. :) Please update us when you can. (Hopefully after the vet visit! ) |
