To add to the food, I started with 1/2 mL at each meal for a few days, then gradually increased it to 1 ml. If his coat seems to get too oily, cut back on it. |
thank you for the replies I am going to try to get him ack to the vet as soon as i can. I am also going to buy the coconut oil and try that |
I still haven't gotten to the vet I am waiting on a check to come in. He is still crying, scratching his ear, and rubbing it on everything. also now hes starting to bit his feet could this be an allergy because I dont think he would bite his feet for an ear infection or ear mites |

I would not wait too long to get the pup to the vet. If infections go untreated, they can worsen and spread in the body. It does sound as if the ear infection may have started from allergies. If he is crying, he is in pain and needs help. I would call the vet, explain your situation, and ask if they will accept partial payment w follow-up payment just to get the pup seen. They also have care cards you can apply for to make payments on a bill. |
ok I went to another vet closer by and the guy looked in his ears and said they were clean. he gave him a cortisone shot for the itching. he also gave my otomax ointment. he said he saw no signs of allergies but to put him on benadryl for a month and see how he reacts |
I know I am probably bothering everyone with this now. the cortisone shot did not work he is still scratching and rubbing his ear against everything and crying. I changed his food to blue buffalo i know if it is a food allergy that takes time to see a difference but what else can I do I dont like seeing him like this. |

Zymox for dogs is for the treatment of acute and chronic otitis externa due to bacterial, viral and yeast infections. It used to be prescription only but not you can buy it OTC online. This link is right from their website, but you can find it other places online too if you want to shop around (when I copied the link they had it on sale though, so check that first. I've had really great results with this (much better than the ones you've been given) and the vet I used to work for prescribed it alot, especially for dogs with recurring or hard to treat problem ears. So, the second vet only looked in the ears too? And they were clean? That sounds kinda weird to be honest, but could just be that they looked clean because of all the cleaning you've been doing with them, the problem could still be there though. If it was me and I was on a really tight budget, I'd try the Zymox first. If that doesn't work you may have to see yet another vet and I'd consider the allery testing. If you see another vet or go back to one of the others, I'd INSIST on a culture being done whether the ears "look" clean or not. Which Blue Buffalo did you switch to? Is it grain-free and/or meant for dogs with allergies? |
I haven't tried the coconut oil yet. do i put it in his ears or in his food. I asked the vet about an allergy test he said to try testing his food first and if he still does it they can test him for dust allergies. I switched him to this food Blue Buffalo - All Natural and Organic Lamb Based Adult Dog Food dry and wet plus a few blue buffalo treats. I was trying to cut out chicken to see maybe it was that flavor he was allergic to. the vet also said to give him benadryl but i haven't tried that yet. |

well the vet said to give him an 1/8 of the pill but your right I wouldnt want to keep him on that same way as I dont want to be on it. |
I used coconut oil on my yorkie and his yeast/ ear mites went away... It was amazing how fast it worked on him. I put it in his ears and his food and also massage it on his skin. I do hope your little one gets better soon. I know how frustrating it is to have something wrong with your baby and nothing seems to work... I hope a solution to the problem comes soon... Tammy |
My vet prescribed the Zymox also, but I haven't tried it yet, from what I've read it's supposed to be very good stuff. I had instead decided to try the Coconut oil first, as I read great things about that too. I don't think the two should be used together in the ear, I think the Coconut oil would prevent the Zymox from working, as the oil coats the ear canal. The Zymox changes the environment in the ear, and I believe the CO would restrict that reaction. It wouldn't hurt to add the CO to his food though. It sounds like your pup may have an inner ear infection, in which case he may need oral antibiotics in addition to ear drops (which ever you decide to use). I wouldn't use an ear cleanser at this point, as it would be too painful. But I would call either or both vets back and ask about antibiotics and inner ear infections, as your pup is highly aggravated and is in discomfort from whatever is going on in his ear. (JMHO) With all the rubbing he's doing, he may end up damaging the ear flap. If the vets want to see him again... it may help to shoot a video of his behavior to show them exactly what he's doing. IMHO, I'd try the Zymox in his ears, give the Benedryl, and add the CO to his food for now, and talk to the vet. |
I agree with kjc about videotaping his ear rubbing. It was suggested to do w Gidget's cough episodes here on YT, and the vet was really pleased that he could watch a cough episode on my husband's cell! |
the coconut oil arrives today I will put it in his ear right away and then mix it with his wet food tonight and the next time i give him a bath i can put it on him but i want to get him groomed |

thank you. I will. I want to cut his hair real short and give him a mohawk but cant find any pictures of how it will look. |
Hey guys im sorry to bring back an old thread but this problem is still on going. I been to 2 vets several times they cant find any ear mites or fungus. His ears are clean. I came back because my mom pointed out something and I figured I would ask. When examined by the vet they said he would need dental surgury because his baby teeth never fell out and I could not afford it. Could his teeth be bothering him and it is connected with his ear or something along those lines. |

Rotten teeth and gum disease can cause serious illness by affecting the major organs. |
this has been going on since the winter I couldn;t afford it because I lose my job and my parents didn't want to help out but I am probably just going to have to do it and take the loss of money I dont have but I rather see him healthy then have any money in my pocket |
I hope your baby feels better soon. |

It could very well be a teeth issue.... Riley went through an ear infection issue and after 14-days of Clavamox, the vet recommended I get some VIRBAC Corium-20 and use it once a week. I have been doing that since May and have had no problems. Results for corium-20 - Search |
Thank you. I was thinking a teeth issue because 2 vets said oh he has no infection, no ear mites. I changed his diet thinking maybe allergies, then they said maybe allergies to dust but he will do this for an hour a day and then stop for the rest of the day. Only signsof allergies is he licks his paws a lot. |
You said you changed his diet to Blue Buffalo? Which one? I would try the BB Wilderness Grain Free. If he is allergic to grains, his ear will never stay cleared up for very long. At this point what do you have to lose? I'm so sorry your little one has had such a tough time. It must be very frustrating. |
