Went to grooming-Came out with eye tumor I Took my litttle zoey 4# and 4years old. On friday 3-11-11 to groomer for her cut. The groomer called me to inform me zoey had a tumor on her eye under the lid,I havent noticed anything , She had the vet look at it. He says she needs it taken out. Vet is talking about removal of the eye. Has any body else had this happen? She a healthy yorkie. I have had her since she was 5 months old she's my baby. this is killing me any advice would be nice. Surgery is tomorrow 3-18-11:mad: |
OH My. I am so sorry to hear this. I have no advice but I just wanted to send prayers and best wishes for a successful operation and smooth recovery. |
I would get a second opinion from a canine opthamologist before I would do any surgery. Especially if the vet is talking about removing an eye. |

Is this your vet, someone you know, saying this? Or is it the groomer's vet? |
Took to groomer-came out with eye tumor Yes this is Zoeys regular Vet that we have aways used. We trust him with our 3 yorkies, I just havent heard of this before, Vet told us its a solid mass, i have talked with other vets in my area and they also said the same, has anyone else known or have had this done? |
You have been given some good advice. Get a 2nd opinion. |
Contact the University of Missouri University of Missouri-Columbia College of Veterinary Medicine see if the can help you. I also found this University of Missouri - Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital Please contact them first Specialty Services - Ophthamology The Veterinary Ophthalmology Service of the University of Missouri VMTH offers referral services to practicing veterinarians in Missouri and surrounding states. Complete veterinary ophthalmology diagnostic, medical, and surgical services are provided for companion animal, food animal, and equine species. Please postpone the surgery unless the vet is a specialist in Ophthamology. |

Buster Brown has posted some excellent sites for you - please use them. Bonny |
I agree with the others, you really need the advice of a specialist on this. Many vets aren't trained in the latest advances, they have a good overall knowledge, but for something this important I recommend that you see a specialist. Just tell your vet you would like to pospone the surgery. Let me add, my prayers are with you. |
defin. talk to Mizzou about this because they are EXCELLENT veterinary specialists there and have done countless surgeries and specialty issues with dogs. also ask around for a local specialty and emeregency center. we have one here in KC area called VSEC. good luck, much prayers and please get a second opinion from a specialist. |

I've been doing a little reading on it, and from what I've read, time may be an important factor. Is the doctor sure it's cancersous? Removal of the eye is suggested as a way to stop the cancer before it spreads. |

As Nancy indicated, time may be a critical factor. Please see a specialist right away to find out whether or not the eye can be saved, and to make sure the right treatment is chosen. Sending you and your baby good wishes. |

I realize that the surgery is tomorrow, and just wanted to say that I wish you all the best. My cat who we had a healthy 19 years before he past did very well with just one eye. He never even realized he was different. He was a kitten when we got him, actually almost dead. His mom had been hit by a car and we found him laying in the woods sick. He had a bad infection that made it necessary to remove his one eye. He bounced right back. I really wish you the best. Elaine |
I love my vet but for this a second opinion, it it was a human I would do the same |
Sending prayers for Zoey today. Please update us and let us know how she's doing. |
I am so sorry and I hope all goes well. Did you manage to get that second opinion? I concur with the statement that if it was my eye I would have. Keep us posted. |
Zoeys surgery is today. Their will be three Vets working on her first thing will check it, Just got phone call the vet said it has grew in size, which once they put her to sleep they will look at it closer and biosy it or atleast try to save the eye if at all possable. |
I hate to think of your dog losing an eye, but you are probably very lucky that your groomer caught this when they did. |
went to groomer-came out with eye tumor Ok Thank you everyone for your advise it was helpful:). Just got a call about Zoey she is fine yes they had to remove her eye:mad: but it sounds like it was for the best, Vet tryed to save it but once he got in. it was a bigger mass so he had to remove it. the good news is he thinks he got it all, but he is sending it off and will get the results back to tell us what the next steps will be. please keep zoey in your prayers for a full recovery without cancer:thumbup: |

Oh, poor Zoey. I hope she is doing well. Sounds to me like your vet knew exactly what was going on and how to treat. I will pray it's benign. |
