How is this baby suppose to take the meds they are so awful tasting...
I have rubbed honey on the tongue before nasty meds and they are more prone to not spitting it out...I have also used an eye dropper and given a tiny bit at a time...took a bit of time to get the full dose in, but less was spit out..best wishes...

I have used the method Wylies mom suggested too, and it has worked for us. Also, my kids LOVE organic baby food (green beans/sweet potatoes/peas/ brown rice, etc in the baby jars.) As KJC said, it helps to give them a taste of the food without the meds first to get them inspired for more, then another yummy treat after they have the meds.
When i mix it in the baby food, they don't have to try to chew, it just goes down before they realized the taste wasn't quite so great.

I tried the bread idea with everything imaginable and it still doesn't work, and the med. is vanila bean flavored, but it's the after taste of the liquid that is so bitter.:thumbdown

Finally, I called her primary vet and told her that I need another pain medication for her and she prescribed Buternorphine. It is liquid and has no taste to it, just like if it's water, the only catch is that it has to be absorbed threw the lining of her inner cheek or under her toung. There is no way she will let us get near her with a syringe so I squirt it into the palm of my hand and with my finger rub it on her gums and maybe if I'm lucky I can get a little under her toung.:rolleyes:

Well we shall see if it works tonight. In the meantime thank you all again for your prayers, comments and replies.

I forgot to mention that I've tried giving it with baby food, ID can food, peanut butter, velveta melted cheese, I'm telling you this medicine is the worsed don't waste your money on it because it will not work. Naomi:)

As I said, over and over, it really is horrible medicine. Again...If any of you are ever told to give it to your pups, don't believe you will be able to fool them. Just ask for something else. Or...don't listen to me and waste your money.

I am glad you got the other med. My suggestion is to get her to relax in your arms...don't let her see the syringe. Keep your hand sort of behind her. Then, give her a treat....right after that, just quickly bring the syringe up from down below and behind and put it in the far corner of her mouth and inject it quickly before she realizes it. Once you can do that a couple of times she will realize that you are not giving her that other med and she might relax and take the new med. Good luck with it! :)
Also, you could just soak a tiny piece of crumb cake with the medicine and maybe that way she will eat that and get all of the medicine.
That medicine can be mixed in Pet Tinic and dogs will take it that way. You might ask if that can be done....although some vets don't like that because they feel the dosage gets messed up in that.

:thumbup: I agree. I think now she associates the syringe as the awful tasting medicine so she's going to put up a fight no matter what is in it. What I did once is put diluted pumpkin (very watered down) and gave it to Bailey so he didn't associate it as something awful.

Try putting a bit of NutriCal or honey in the syringe & giving that to her & then do the med after she has a positive experience with that mean old syringe.;)

Thank you all for your suggestions! I tried the treat first and then the med. and it worked since the new med has no taste she thinks its water. I also tried the syringe with water and Nutri Cal and it started to work but she just wasn't interested at the moment, but I'm sure that another day she'll go for it. And the suggestion of the pumpkin, I don't think she'll go for this one becuase she at this point can detect the Tramadol a mile away.

Really I agree with lady jane, no one should waste there money on Tramadol!!!

How is Princess doing now ?

She's okay the pain has stopped thanks to a new pain med she is taking. Her surgery is scheduled for July 11th, the doctors want to wait until her bones are fully developed. She's wearing a neck brace to keep her head stabilized so she can't do the downward flexion.

Now she is itching and scratching everywhere, we took her to UC Davis Vet. Medical Training Hospital and they have her on an allergy diet plan, and have perscribed some antihistimines until we figure out if the itching scratching is environmental or from food.

But besides all that she's doing fine. We're taking one day at a time.

Glad to hear she is doing okay for now. Poor baby. My medication causes itching so I feel for her - itching can be awful. Hope they can find the cause of hers. Am so glad she is comfortable and has a wonderful home and people who really care for her.

Poor baby but what a little trooper she is and You for going the distance for her. What a Good Doggy Mama you are:). Her itching could just be from nerves too, and pain meds can also cause itching. I'm sure you'll both be happy when this is all in the past and she is fixed up like brand new. I know I will. Know that you both are in my prayers every day.

Try Metacam
 

My 17 yr old was in horrible pain and they gave him Metacam and Tramadol, The tramadol made him sick, the Metacam made him far more mobile and lively. You could see a big difference and it is not so hard on them. Check with vet for circumstances that would prevent the use of Metacam. I hope it will work better for you. I just used a syringe and squirted it into the back of his mouth and he had no choice but to swallow. I hate Tramadol! Good Luck and it is so nice to read about people like you who are doing so much for their fur babies and taking their responsibility seriously. I tip my hat to you.

Hi Everyone!

Princess Chloe and I send our greetings to all!!! I'm sorry I have not posted an update on Princess Chloe, we are working on her allergy which UC Dermatology dept. has her on an elimination diet (rabbit and potatoes) and is giving her temaril-P for the itching and scratching. It's been a week now that we have been able to sleep all night TG.

She is wearing a neck brace 24/7 and is in her playpen all the time, she has gain a lot of weight. The temaril-P makes her very hungry. We are giving her buprenorphine every 12 hrs. which seems to be helping with the pain. With all this she is a bundle of joy!!!

We are scheduled for a follow-up visit to her Derma on 5/3 and a follow-up visit to her Neuro on 5/16.

We just noticed that one of her upper teeth is growing over one of her baby tooth and needs to be pulled. Hopefully this can be done during her 7/11 surgery so we don't have to place her under anesthisia twice just for one tooth.

When she was spayed back in Feb. 28,2011 the vet removed three of her baby teeth, guess this was a late bloomer.LOL

We'll this is all for now, thank you all for your prayers, support and concern. As we get closer to the date I will update Princess Chloe's progress.

I tried mixing in avocado and sometimes that helps, if not try mashing it in A/D
 

My dogs have tramodol and it makes them sick. I take a little hamb, scrambled eggs and melted cheese and put in under the cheese and she eats it. the best ways is using a syringe turn med upside down and draw the measured med in and then squirt it in the very back of her throat where she cant bet much of it out. The metacam is so much better. I have also mixed the tramadol in avacado. It can be put in popcycles of beef soup or chicken soup. You will find a way to work it out. Sometimes you realy have to get clever with this little picky one. God bless and God Luck.

Thank you so much for your comments, suggestions and prayers! We are tappering Princess Chloe's temaril-P down to a 1/4 of a pill every three days. We're hoping to have her off of it prior to her surgery on July 11th.

I need to talk to the neuro vet. to see if maybe we can try the Metacam after surgery, the only thing is it gives her diarrhea, maybe if they gave her something with it like Flagel to avoid the diarrhea??? Well we shall see, today we are starting to give her buprenorphine 0.1ml only before going to bed to see how that goes. I pray that it will work, we don't like giving her all these meds.

Oh and now we've discovered that two of her baby teeth did not fall out, they won't be taking them out during her upcoming surgery cause it's too risky due to infection. So God willing, after she has recovered from her surgery she'll have to go under again to have these two teeth removed. What can I say, never a dull moment! LOL

That is what I use for pain control for my pups and my fosters following surgery and it works really well. It does have a tendency sometimes to make them a bit whiny, but they are pain free and it does not taste like that ridiculous liquid tramadol! :)

Hi There! Thanks so much for keeping up with Princess Chloe's health condition. We are trusting the Lord that all will turn out well with her surgery. In the meantime, the "Queen of the Canine World" LOL:D as we like to call her, is full of energy and as loving as always. We love her so much and we will spare no cost to make her as healthy as possible.
