Heart worms I don't know if you guys remember me, but I posted here when my 16 year old yorkie died. I adopted a Scotty/Cairn mix in July who tested HW- before we adopted him. He had his annual checkup/shots in January and he tested positive. He was on preventative, but he lived in the wild before the rescue got him and from what I have read it takes 6 months to show up in the tests at the vet. He had his first treatment on Monday and he is sore and tired. The injection site feels like a muscle cramp. He is a tough little guy and I know he will tough it out, but I want to get some feedback from any of you guys if you have gone through this before. I know he is not a yorkshire, but he is a terrier, and my past dealings with you guys have been great. I know many of you deal with other types of dogs. Thanks for any input. |
I am sorry to hear this. At least he on a treatment. has the vet given a prognosis on his recovery? I cannot offer any advice because I haven't been through this. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your little one. Hopefully if someone has gone though this they can better answer this than I could. |
My 15 or 16 year old IG had HW when I got him from a BYB. He had the immeticide treatment, I think two injections. He was a very unsocialized dog and I had to basically keep him crated or on a leash for a month after his treatment, but he recovered very well. He was two or three at the time and has been amazingly healthy since then. He's a pretty healhty old guy now. |
It is my understanding that he does have be kept quiet during his treatment....in other words crated.... Thank goodness he found you....good luck to you both. |
Thanks for the replies. As far as prognosis, it looks good. The vet said he was at 2 out of 10 for severity. He is on immeticide which seems to work well from what we have read. The vet thinks he is about 4 years old, so what you are saying Lizzie makes me feel good. This little guy has been through so much and we want him to have a good life for a long time. Thanks again. |
The injections that they get are in the lower back, deep into the muscle and they hurt terribly. Did your vet put him on prednisone or Doxycycline? I also have given pups pain meds for the first couple of days. You might want to ask your vet about a pain med if he is uncomfortable. My vet gives Bupranex. Please do keep him quiet! That is ultra important during HW treatment. Crate rest is best....if I get a pup that stresses in a crate, I keep them tethered to me whenever I am sitting for a period of time so that they can be out of the crate. Sounds normal. Yes, he needs to stay as calm and quiet as possible. Did your vet do doxycycline? |

The vet did not give him anything for pain, but I will ask him about it for the second treatment. He is doing great today. Almost back to his old self. We are keeping him quiet, so hopefully it will go well from here on out. He felt so bad yesterday and the day before, I was just worried about him. |

I had to remove all of the bird feeders because of the squirrels since he is supposed to be calm for a month hehe. |

When I fostered dachshunds from a puppy mill seizure. Two of them were heart worm positive. I had to take them back to Hillsborough County animal shelter for their treatment. Unfortunately one of them was too sick to get treatment and she passed away. But the other one Nutmeg, I ended up adopting and I had her 10 years before she passed away at the age of 18 (age determined by the vet). I don't know what treatment they gave her as I had to leave her overnight, and I don't remember bringing any medication home for her(but it was a long time ago). So your little one can have a long normal life. Thank you so much for rescuing your little one:) |
I know at the shelter they get in dogs with heart worm occasionally and their is a note on their cage to only walk to go potty and then back in. They all seem to recover fine. I hope his treatment goes smoothly. |
Skip feels good now, the hard part is keeping him quiet. I can't crate him, because that makes him upset. He has been resting on his couch, his bed, his lounge chair on the deck and his bed. I pretty much have no furniture that belongs to me, but, I will stand for a couple of months if need be. :) |

My Yorkies' rest time usually meant a lot of laptime as they loved to be cuddled and coddled when they felt bad. Hope your little one continues to do very well. :) |

So glad to hear he is doing well and has taken over the house - just like all of ours have done.:D I do not know about the injection site. I would hope they'd give it in another location. I'd be sure to ask them why the site is like that. I'm sure you'd love to let him go for walks and have tons of fun, but there will be plenty of time for those things later.:) |
