Devastated - my 1yr old baby has renal failure!!! Hello, My baby (Max) turned 1 in September. For the most part he has been pretty healthy but in July he suffered a couple seizures. Test ruled out liver shunt, etc. so the vet said it was possibly epliepsy. That particular day, I had him outside (with lost of water) and thought maybe it was the heat but his temperature was normal. The next plan was to wait it out and possible have another Dr do an ultrasound of his liver. Well this week he was due for his shots so I took him in and they said he has peridonatal disease (he is a very very picky eater, eats more wet than dry). They ran some test on him to make sure he could withstand the anesthesia for the teeth procedure and a couple hours ago I was told he has renal failure! He just turned one in Septemer. I must add he is the runt of the litter and in recent weeks he has lost a little weight (not appetite, just being picky with his food). I read on this site others have had this problem so I just started making home made and he loves it. He is also on Nutra Cal to help add calorie. Right now the vet has him giving him fluids for the next couple days. Basically she told me that with renal failure he may survive anywhere from 6mos to a year. If you looked at this dog, you would never know he was sick. He still plays, eats (home cooked food) and doesnt act sick. We are absolutely devastated. This is our first Yorkie and my kids (14 & 12) and I cant stand the thought of him not being around. I feel very cheated. Has anyone else had any experience with anything like this. The vet said its possible he was born this way and it may have progressed to this. she also asked me if he could have gotten into anything toxic but we keep a very close watch on him so that is very unlikely. Any responses would be greatly appreciated! Tyra |
I am so sorry your pup is so sick. |
I responded to your pm in more detail but don't give up hope. Find out his Bun and creatinine values and I would have an ultrasound done to see if his kidneys are normal size or not. I will keep Max and you in my prayers. If there is anything I can do or you have any questions please let me know. Hugs |
So very sorry to hear about Max... hoping you can find some help with treatment.... |

I am so sorry for you and your furbut. It looks like you have received some good information in previous post. I will say I lost a pup about 2 years ago--- zoey --- crf-- I was told it could have been toxins or birth defect. I racked my brain, the only thing I could think of was Tylenol. She pasted in my arms... but it seams you may have caught it early enough to have hope... do all you can. My thoughts and prayers are with you. |
Senifing Max and you my prayers and support and thoughts |
Just wanted to drop a note to let you know that we are praying for you, Max, and your family! I have a friend who has a 7 year old Yorkie, and is going through this same tragedy! Prayer for Max! |
Tyra, Did the doctor suggest a prescription diet. There have been good results in turning the situation around. From a breeder's standpoint, have you contacted your little guys breeder? She may want to be made aware should this be a genetic problem and of course to be there for you. |
I am so sorry you are going through this. One yrs old is so young. Maybe more experienced yorkie owners and breeders can add more information for you to help little Max. |
I am so very sorry to read of baby's Kidney issues. I know what it like, my very 1st Yorkie I lost to kidney failure he was 8, and I lost another to it at 12 yrs of age. I will ceratinly say prayers for your baby. |
Thank you all for the prayers, well-wishes & words of encouragement. Patti - his BUN is 174 and creatine is 3. So far his Dr hasnt prescribed a special diet but said they will do that when I bring him home (hopefully Sat). I left a message earlier for the breeder so I'm hoping she will call me soon. When he had the seizure over the summer I spoke to her and she said she has never had any puppies have any liver or seizure disorders. But I'm not sure if I mentioned this but Max was the runt so I'm not sure if that's played apart. I'm hoping & praying they caught it early - scary thing about it I cant help but not wonder what would have happened if I hadnt taken him to get his shots....then I would have never known until it was probably too late. To see him, he acts fine. He has never been a real playful dog (in terms of toys). ....he is actually very laid back. We often joke that he's actually a little human - I wish I knew how to post his picture so you could put a face to the name, LOL. Max is by far the best dogs I have ever had...super smart, great disposition, no barking problems, no aggresiveness, great with kids and just always very happy & loving. My biggest fear was another dog attacking him or him getting hurt because he's so little - not this. And in reading different post, it seems like kidney disease happens alot in these little guys. I'm wondering if I should start looking for another one.... Thank you all for the helpful links and resources - I truly appreciate it very very much. |
Here's Max Thanks again for your thoughts, prayers and well wishes....here's my baby. This was taken a couple months ago. I know he's a boy but I just couldnt resist the cute hair bow.;) http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/cus...19207215_1.gif |
